I don't think what we see from the book scene is sweetness so much as Hacker doing what he feels would best help him achieve his goals. On the other hand, we've seen that he's not smart/mature enough to always or even often do what's best. So..., nice or intelligent, neither really make sense but it shows potential for either.
"you can add decimals together???" digit asks the stupidist questions, and the kids are considerably smarter than him. but he does carry around random stuff and can turn his beak into something useful.
