I cried when watching this. Jim as an old frail man, & now he's gone. One of my heroes as a kid - the greatest baseball team ever. He's young forever in my mind, as were all the "Boys of Summer" in Detroit 1968.
Jim Northrup was my all-time favorite Tiger player. I remember the game where he hit two grand slams. What few remember is that later in the game he came up again with the bases loaded and nearly hit another one. He also made one of the best catches I've ever seen made by a left fielder at Tiger Stadium. Jimmy was a great athlete. God bless you Jim! You gave this young lad a lot of baseball thrills and memories!
That catch saved the game and a shutout for Lolich 'cause it happened in the bottom of the ninth, if it's the catch I'm thinking of. Absolutely classic way of ending a game.

Are you talking about Jim Northrup's catch of the year in July of 1972 where he robbed Baltimore's Dave Johnson of a homerun and made a double play?

I remember that catch..............in fact it was the catch of the year in 1972..........he threw to Paul Jata at first base to double off someone

Why did he hate Billy Martin so much?
robertmastroianni 2 years ago
Billy said that Jim thought he was the greatest & Jim was aggravated Billy didnt play him more; simply it was an ego clash.

Cuz Billy Martin was a jerk and got fired for ordering the tiger pitchers to use the spitball illegally

I thought it had to with Billy getting in one punch out at a bar too many for Jim Campbell to handle.
Detroit was a blue-collar town then, and the fans were for the most part angry when a combative type like Martin got canned.
