All I know is that it sounds cool if you noodle a loose Red House over top of it!! That, and a pic with Gary and his Les Paul would've been better, but please take no offense!! The track is F%&%#ng great!! Thank you ;)
Seriously...play a Gmin7 over this. Although the E min 7 works great it doesn't have enough "blue" notes in it to make this thing really cook. Of course the progression starts with a 1-4-5but then it makes a cool transition to Amin7(Think dorian) than to Bmin7(think dorian again) to a Bbmin7b5 (Bb diminished works awesome) out to the 5 (D7) than to the (Eb7). A great example in how to handle this progression can be found on Danny Gattons "88 Elmira St" recording on a track called"BluesNewburg".
sorry but people who tell you to completely forget scales, chords, etc, really DON'T know what their talking about when it comes to learning to play. Eric Clapton, B.B King, Eric Johnson etc are as good as they are because they PRACTICED. sure you have to feel it but think of it this way, if your buildin a house without blueprints its not gonna stand up very long. so learn your scales chords and progressions, then feel it out. don't be afraid to mess up just keep the toes tapin learn what to do
@giub81 You obviously havent played for longer than a week, if at all, as that is just pretentious bullshit. Artistry is about blood sweat and tears both in the sincerity of what you express and the tehniques needed to express those things effectively.
guys, guys, calm down, appropriate scales for this song are g major pentatonic and g mixolydian as well as g minor pentatonic and g dorian, there are others especially over the turnaround(diminished,etc...), cool thing on this one is try arpeggiating the turnaround, to get ya started g major pentatonic and g mixolydian will work best over the g chord, g minor pentatonic and g dorian will work best over the c chord, have fun..........................
just play the blues in g you bunch of overthinking dickheads. do you thing bb king is thinking all that crap when he plays. go back to music school and leave the blues to the cats that payed thier dues.
@lodaddy Of course BB isnt thinking about it, cause he has already thought about it and practiced it so much it is second nature. However any of us mere mortals must practice the hell out of learning theory and scales that we too may have the fredom to just play and not think about it so much.
Santana once said something to the effect that one must become a total slave to theory in order to gain the freedom to express yourself outside of it. But I guess you think Carlos is an overthinking dhead
@briwill99 I thought I replied once but I dont see it. I have posted a video. Carlos never said anything like that. he doesnt read music or know about theory. This song is in G! Eminor is the relative minor of G. Which means , if you start a g scale on E and end on E it will be an e minor scale. Because they both have 1 sharp and that if F sharp. On the turnaround, a good musician will follow the changes while a avg. (nothing wrong with that) one will stay in the key of G.
@lodaddy Actually Carlos Santana did say that. Not sure if he can read music or not as that is not relavent. Not sure what your point is on relative minor. What you are saying is true, but not different than my comment, "E minor pentatonic has the same notes as G major pentatonic".
this song is in g major, but the scale to play over it is the g minor pentatonic. that's the blues. the g major scale will sound funny. so will e minor. jeez.....
Not if you do it right. This song is full of chord changes to play over, and if tastefully done, you can work in tons of scales. My favorite ones are G minor and major pentatonics, but I'll occasionally go into the C natural scale (mixolydian mode) to round out the sound. You should try it. Lots of fun!

Keys and scales are different... a key is A,B,C,D,E,F and G, and they come with sharp, 1 octave higher, and flat, 1 octave lower. Scales can have minor, major, dom, or lots others. The scale u use has dif roots but same fingering in minor and major, you just adjust the position of the scale so that the roots fall in place with the key Ex: Minor A pentatonic has A root on 5th fret 6th string, and major has the same, but the root is moved, so scale is same finger pattern but on 2nd fret (1st pos)
Actually, I just posted a comment that said E minor and G are the same key. They are, but this song is not in that key. It's in G minor. Just use the G pentatonic scale and everything is clean.
It's great finding these fantastic backing tracks on YouTube!!! I didn't think of YouTube as a place to find backing tracks, but Boy, was I wrong... Great work and thank you!! Fantastic!
@tiagolascas E minor pentatonic has the same notes as G major pentatonic. Imo both G major and minor pentatonic work well.
I Dont like G minor pentatonic so much over the minor chords played just before the turnaround. I have to select my notes carefully there. Any suggestuins from anyone more knowledgeable than me?
@richardwbass Actually it's G minor. Playing E minor would make it G major. I think. You can switch between the 2. Finding the right time is the trick as I'm still working on that.
@lennerb This is the blues!!! You (can and often do) play the minor pentatonic against the first major chord, although you could play the major pentatonic too. The blues played on the major pentatonic sounds dull and boring and sounds like playing the chords. You could play the(major) myxolydian scale too
@swingmanu I played the pentatonic scale on my stool stabber and blasted sperm shrapnel all over the strings of my guitar. That night club never asked me back again but i got a standing ovation from the fucking faggot in the first row. FUCK!
@RandomSpevv if you're gonna play the minor pentatonic and nothing else, you're not worth being engaged... learn more tricks(major penta and myxolydian, change keys and tempos), play soft, play heavy, go slow, make it fast, sing some!!!!
@RandomSpevv excellent!!!!! There had to be someone interested in you, and your dick, as soon as you stopped playing...Somebody who thinks guitar players suck!!!
