@coestar The science behind locking down spawners with torches is simple, and you're totally overshooting it. See, a spawner can only spawn creatures in an area of 8x8x3. That's usually 1 block beyond the room itself. Now, in order for monster to spawn, they MUST be able to spawn naturally. So, in this case (zombies) they need light 7 or lower to spawn.

A torch has a luminance of 14, dropping 1 luminance per block as you go from the torch. ... comments are too short, damn

Coe, u can't disable spawners by getting the spawner block well lit. the spawner has it's radius and if only 1 block of it is dark monsters will spawn.

One torch next to or on top of the spawner is enough to shut it down -- wherever the light reaches. It won't shut down spawning on the other side of the wall, or any other dark spots nearby.

I know a thing or two about mob spawners from etho's lab:

There's no way to really "shut them down" without destroying them; as long as they are there, they will spawn mobs in any dark spot in a 9x9 area. This includes outside the spawning room or wherever it's a little dark, so really you just need to make sure everything's well lit (go figure).

You only have to put one torch on top of the spawner to disable it.

@ILikeTheMoneys You have to light any area within the spawning radius of the spawner. Putting a torch on top of the spawner is usually enough but not necessarily. It has nothing to do with how light the spawner itself is.

Hmm. . . It's not too much of a "quest" anymore, is it? I honestly do miss the old episodes, and the old Minecraft quite a bit. Oddly enough, it felt more adventurous, despite the fact that the new 1.8 Adventure Update (go figure) is clearly more adventurous, or is at least meant to be so. Nonetheless, it would be nice to see some more "questy" episodes again.

@ianrulz001 It's just the nostalgia. I feel that way too, but it's only "less adventurous" because we're more familiar with it. The old Minecraft didn't have the nether, didn't have biomes, no ravines, no villages, and some other stuff. What it had was newness.

Seriously Coe. Man up in minecraft. Whenever I find a dungeon i run in with a diamond sword, and don't place torches until i killed off all the mobs. I also die a lot. I don't care though, it makes the game fun, and more entertaining overall.

@aakashm1 I won't say I disagree with you. :( But we shouldn't push Coe to do something he doesn't want to do. If he's happy with how the series is now, then that's fine and he can continue with how it is, and I'll still watch. But if he doesn't want to continue the series anymore, that's just as fine, and I don't think there will be a lot of hate from his community. There's just so much one person can do before they get bored and want to do something else. :(

He still has his touch, but he's just spent a while doing a lot of exploring or temporary little things instead of building. It seems like he'll start building again with his village plans

Spawners spawn mobs in a 8x8 area around them, centered around one of the corners. Most dungeons aren't that big (only 5x5, 5x7 or 7x7). The smaller ones leave a one block width outside which can spawn mobs.

Coe, Lava is now renewable. If an empty block is surrounded on all four sides by lava source blocks, the empty block turns into a lava source block.
