Who gives a shit about certain words and whether she sounds american in this that or the other ?! Its kerry fucking ellis !! She could stand on that stage, say cheese and she would even get a standing ovation !!
I do not want to offend anyone but in my opinion this is one of her waekest perfomances of NGD she has ever given! And her voice sounded way more powerful in West End when she was allowed to do her growls! Oh... and was not forced to sing with an American accent!!!
She did growl on Broadway...singing with an accent kills a lot of power in singing. I wish people would understand. It's hard enough to sing this score in your native accent, but it gets even harder to sing it in a different character voice on top of it.
I do understand that it is much harder to sing with a foreign accent... and I wasn't critising Kerry for not singing as well with the American accent, I was critisising the producers for even forcing her to sing with an American accent and for makingher leave out her growls after the first couple of shows...
@idinaBALLET She never didn't growl if she didn't want to...she always did the Look to the western sky ones when she wasn't vocally tired on broadway.
I disagree. Well I think that when she growls in the songs on west end it sounds really good, like if you listen to No good deed on her last night, it's really effective, though here it's no where near as effective.
I would love to hear it. I just think it's a little odd for girls to growl. But I grew up with the idea that growling and yelling are not needed and I agree with you at can be very effective at times. I think this is a great clip by the way. :) thank you for responding.
if you search 'no good deed 9/5/09' and click on the one by 'mattyork1973' and listen to that then you'd understand how her growls can be so good... I love you kerry!
Bear in mind that the conductor makes new tempos every show. He only has a key goal for a tempo. One show it could be rly slow, the next it could be rly fast.
The thing is that only about 10-11 days before hand on the week before her last in London, she had tonsillitis and wasn't well, but was fantastic on her last night. The thing is that the prosceniums of The Apollo Victoria and The Gershwin are very different acoustically so she has to adjust to the difference. It will be brilliant now I would say - Remember, this was her first on Bway.
I agree, that here, her vocals are very light, I also think that forcing the accent isn't helping. She is phenomenal in London and I think she got better as the run on Broadway went on.
I agree with scootyscoot4. think kerry is phenomenal but i think that her accent sucks in the eleka nhamen's, listen to her 2no wizard that there is or was" in broadway and london and you will nottice a difference. She is brilliant bu better in London
Well, she'd been poorly for a while beforehand, for 07.06.08 they put Cassidy on in the afternoon (not because she was leaving, it was to save Kerry's strength - I asked one of the cast). Maybe she's still fighting the remnants of a bug?
i saw her in london in february- trust me, you will be blown away. in songs like defying gravity and the wizard and i it's even more amazing if you have seats quite near the stage, so you hear the full extent of it (:
she always sort of sounds american when she sings. i mean, in comparison to say Alexia or Shona White, who sound very British even when they sing. Kerry sounds British in certain words, but you can't exactl tell she's British just by listening to her sing.
she just sounds American when she sings...she's not trying to! A lot of British singers sound American when they sing! Elton John, George Michael so on and so on! It's not intentional
t me it sounds more like she's trying to speak in a British accent, but she isn't entirely good at it. :P like at "i didn't eat grass as a child", "i'm beautifully tragic", and "it's a little perky"..compare British Kerry to Broadway Kerry, and in this show it definitely sounds American.
1) I love the percussion in this particular performance, especially during the chanting.
2) I don't know why, but when she says "So be it then", only in this performance, I always seem to smile for some reason, and I don't know why.

On broadway they made her not use it.

@simzproductionz Aww, why ? It's like her signature notes and stuff though, thats really stupid. x[

Fantastic! But it definately was justa little too fast...

Not the best performance. It just sounds really off, no offense intended. It just seems really breathy and kind of rushed in some place.

She's not my favorite elphaba that's for sure..she's not bad, but she seems really breathy at times...and off note. But that's just my opinion.

her growls are one of her "signature" things and what seperate and in my opinion makes her better that the other elphaba's!!

really? but then she did start growling.

This is ok but I am not really a fan. The growling in her voice threw me off. I think its gross to hear a girl growl at all.

When she was in London she was used to stress some words as 'READING' and 'I'M WICKED'. I think it was much more better and intense.

But she can do so much better and you'de think she'd do a performance like she did on 07.06.08 to win over the americans..

She is putting on American accent for the show.
As a American... I would prefer she kept her English accent, I was looking forward to hearing it.
WishingOnlyWounds 3 years ago
Usually when kerry sings in wicked (even on the west end) she has a sort of american accent but when she speaks she speaks normally.
