Dizzy's Big band Rhythm Section. It started the whole thing. I had the pleasure of writing an arrangement for a record session I did for John Lewis. What a thrill to write for one of my arranging idols.
I don't know when this was taped (the quality is excellent), but that seems to be Ray Brown on bass. Did he sometimes replace Heath? I think Brown played with them in Hamburg 1983. Could this be from that performance?
Ray Brown pushes as much before the beat as Percy Heath lags behind it. Refreshing, but Percy is my man. BTW, in his solo Ray is more than once out of tune. I know it's a fiendishly difficult instrument, but still.
great company of modern jazz swingers, Ray is showing his experience and composure, another Bassist would have got lost, especially the way Milt Jackson and John Louis started from the beginning
yeah im just discovering it too, i used to play drums but they taught me rock music... if i learned this music id keep playing still.... so laid back and smooth
Grateful for this brilliant performance of immortal Bag's Groove! I just wonder if there is a "Real Blues" by Ray Brown tri on video? I've heard it on Concord CD under the title "Summer Wind" only and was so impressed by. Appreciate an information on that. Gena
That is the ORIGINAL lineup for the MJQ, when playing with Dizzy. What a treat. I love Percy Heath, too. Just a different style of bass. Both are gods in the pantheon of jazz bass. THANK YOU for posting this video!
A fabulous bass player, Ray Brown, but nowhere near Percy Heath in this setting. Percy has that tremendous tone and always lays back like no one else can.
Yeah, and that also is not Connie Kay on drums, that is a younger Mickey Roker. I imagine someone was sick or there was a scheduling situation with the regular drums and bass for the MJQ. Highly qualified substitutions often happen. :-)
I just realized this was the title song for the show "Odd Couple"!

That looks like Mickey Roker on drums. Am I right? I guess that Connie had passed on by this point. Too bad!

Yeah, I prefer jazz without brass myself. Have you checked out wes montgomery? It's guitar, bass, piano, drums - good stuff.
Gretsche87 3 years ago
BOO! Actually I enjoy it as well and I'm a brass musician. These guys just flow so well and I love the Vibes.

The Modern Jazz Quartet was always sophisticated. They appealed to even those who loved classical music. Their sound was very melodic.

Genial como siempre, Ray Brown e Mickey Rocker, sin palabras para elogiar, substituindo a 2 grandes como Percy Haeth e Connie Kay.

or not when this video was made, that's

I belive it's Mickey Roker on drums; Kenny Clarke had already died.
BuckshotLaFunke 4 years ago
I think you are completely right: Mickey Roker is playing the drums.
Besides: Hearing and watching Ray Brown and Mickey Roker instead of Percy Heath and Connie Kay is a new and interesting experience.

Ray Brown and Kenny Clarke were the original bass played and drummer witn MJQ, so this must have been some special reunion occasion.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Ray Brown is playing bass in this video, not Percy Heath.
