@durianriders Yes. The "cage" as you call it is to keep them safe from predators at night. During the day they scratch around the yard, going wherever they like. I suggest you do some reading up on how to keep chickens alive before you start leaving profanity laced, misguided comments. Leaving chickens out in the open with an open coop is like putting up a sign for the foxes and raccoons that says, "Free Dining."
good video, I have a stupid question in the enclosed portion of the coops the perch is off he ground 12 inches or so. Do the eggs crack when they drop out. Thats the part I dont get. thanks
No, that's a very good question. The chickens "roost" on the perch overnight, but they lay eggs in the egg box on the back of it. The egg box is on the lowest level, so the eggs don't drop any distance at all.
how many egs do your birds produce and do you have to catch each on of them to go back in the pen? do you eat your birds?thank for posting gave me a few ideas!
Six hens lay 3 to 6 eggs a day. It's enough to provide for a family and have enough to share with neighbors.
Each hen is on a 26 hour schedule.
We don't eat the birds. They go back to the coop like clockwork at night. We've never, ever had to chase down a chicken at night. They go to bed at dark, no questions asked!
lol i didn't know that they went to bed thats funny! i live on a cattle ranch i plan to build me a large coop and have about 10laying hens and raise a few to eat a month! thanks for you info.....love lynard skynard!
That's a GOOD dog :D I just wanted to pat it's head and tell it what a good good dog it was :)... mostly cause our 8 month old Redbone Coonhound puppy thought it was a good idea to eat our chicken today:( The hen survived though... I thought she hadn't but I found her hiding out in the neighbors yard... we live "in town" I think they thought i was NUTS :D
There is a free-range chicken farm about 45 minutes southeast of Indy, and they sell mature laying hens for $6. We didn't get a rooster. The girls are laying 4-5 eggs a day.
Sweet, ib! I love your coop. I haven't seen one like that. Is there a way to easily access their nesting area in order to collect the eggs? My, they looked so busy and happy in your yard =) I found out about a month ago we can have chickens. I think I'll check in with my neighbors first...they'll get some eggs too.
Yes that's right. I'm just starting out and my birds are still in training. So far they've learned to fly up to 20 miles. My radius for work will be 50 miles.
Dude!! These aint free birds!!! They are fucken caged birds!!!

How can i get the blue print on this chicken coop?
brokenmoon65 3 years ago
If you ever find one let me know. It cost an arm and a leg to get one on the net.

I am so jealous....I want out of my condo now, so I can have a huge garden and chickens like you! That is so awesome!

Until then, make friends with someone with chickens and a garden! :-) And you can always support local farmers' markets! Best wishes to you.

The box on the back of the coop has a hinge on it so you can access the nesting box from outside. Neighbors love eggs :-)

Your dog looked so confused! :) That's pretty cool! The heart on the door was a nice touch.
greentxmama 3 years ago
The dog is still learning about chickens. I think he's going to be okay with them.
ibwhite 3 years ago
Oh how neat! That doesn't look too hard to build either. I'd love to have my own chickens. I raise white homing pigeons for weddings.
destroyahdes 3 years ago
That's cool. So you release the pigeons at the wedding and they fly back to their coop?
