I like this rendition that Scotto does. Just yesterday on a long drive home Manon Lescaut was on and I waited until This song came along to hear it...it was very dissuapointing as the singer was not as forceful or as heart breaking and sounded more like a whining Poodle... Need less to say Renata sings this song to perfection. I get tears everytime to it.

I think you may have a touch of the dyslexia, my dear--I'm sure you meant to say that Scotto is an actress and Freni is not. I think Scotto is a pretty good actress. And musically speaking, Scotto's version is a lot better... but there is something about Mirella Freni's voice that just captivates me... I think Scotto's voice is ok; it just gets very brassy and harsh in her upper register where Freni's stays sweet and light... but I will say that I think Scotto's version of this is VERY GOOD... and I will say that it is a little and only a little better than Freni's... God, I can't believe I even said that!

Damn! this is the definitive version of this aria. I saw this in person, so maybe Im jaded. I remember feeling her breath on my cheek even though we were far enough away. I have never seen one better. This sets the standard. The flute and oboe are as important as Renata for setting the atmosphere. I have criticized James Levine much in the past, but letting the orchestra flex during those phrases is exactly right. Bravo.
