  • I think Mary understood that Jesus would be the Messiah, but I don't think she comprehended what that really meant, at least not yet. I don't think any of the Jews understood what the Messiah meant until Jesus began his ministry, and even then it was hard for them to stomach. Many refused. I think some couldn't stand the thought of God saving people who weren't of the seed of Abraham.

But Mary was told that Jesus was God's Son and would sit on David's throne (Messiah) in Luke 1:30-35

  • I'm sure Mary knew that her Son was/is holy and begotten of God. I'm sure she knew He was The Messiah when he arose from the dead, and she was among those who received the baptism in the Holy Ghost in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. Yes, she knew, but the song is one of the best I've ever heard and Kathy Mattea does it beautifully. :-)

  • I think she knew. One of the few who did before we did.

  • Blessed Mother Mary, is the Mother of God!

  • I have loved this song since I first heard it on the radio a few years ago. This is a beautiful arrangement, and I have always liked Kathy Mattea. Praise God!

  • This song makes me what to cry for all the people that have forgotten what Christmas is all about. Santa has become the children's idol and Jesus has been put in the back seat. This song is what Christmas is about.

  • who disliked this they know not what they do

  • Just love it ................your voice and the song suite you . Yes its got the message of Christmas in it and praise God !!

  • i wanna cry

  • The simple, truthful words fill the heart with joy - Mary Did You Know is also my favourite Christmas song. I watched the night that Kathy Mattea sang this for the President's Christmas Gathering - Loved it!

  • This was my moms favorite song and she has gone to be with the LORD and it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it because it reminds me of her. She will be gone 5 years this October 4th. I know she is looking down on us with a big smile on her face, but some day I hope I will see her smile again. I LOVE AND MISS YOU MOM!!!

  • Lovely! I wasn't even aware that this song existed until the day of my sister's funeral. It was her favorite, and my mom and brother-in-law arranged to have it played at the service. Because of that, it is VERY special to me. Thanks for posting.

  • Such a heart warming song! :)

  • Kathy Mattea is one of the most underrated and under appreciated vocalists in Country and Pop Music. I love that falsetto in this song! AMAZING!!!! She's such a beautiful person, inside and out. No one sings this song like she does..NO ONE :)

  • fantastic, wonderful.

  • One of my all time favorites .... so beautiful ...

  • Kathy does an outstanding job of this new Christmas song of our decade.

Dr. William P. MacLean, Nampa Idaho.

  • Kathy, you must be so proud of yourself for lobbying against the the WV coal mining jobs. Exactly what is your plan to replace all those mining jobs with? or are we all just going to sit around the campfire on a mountain while singing "18 wheels" while our families do without the things that those mining jobs provide?

  • nice voice....i love it..God bless u more.....

  • This IS and always has been The VERY BEST version of this song!

  • this is a beautiful song, one of my favorites, I play it often, it doesn't have to be Christmas for me to want to listen to it.

  • Mary knew. She always knew.

  • I have two sons with autism and they are a blessing!

  • @writermom2 I have a son with autism as well.

  • @mzgriffy I have 2 autistic sons so I can fully understand. This is a great tune .

  • Where was this performed? It's gorgeous!

  • @BellaandtheCullens - This TV special was taped at the NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM, 401 F Street NW Washington, DC 20001 on December 11, 1994.

The 2011 edition - the 30th CHRISTMAS IN WASHINGTON - will be taped on 12/11 and will air on Friday, December 16 at 8:00 PM on TNT cable.

Sadly, the irreverent no-talent Conan O'Brien will be hosting.

  • I absolutely love this song...it makes my belief stronger. Knowing how much God did to bring us back to Him.

  • @santamara

    Incredible lyrics....so beautiful!

  • Beautiful Christmas Song

  • This is not the only great song (message) on this cd. Kathy has the most beautiful voice. The cd is a story line all the way to the Cross. This cd saved a Christmas many years ago and focused me on Christ.

  • I love this song. My favorite version is from Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • Tonight coming back home I heard this song on the radio for the very first time. It touched my heart so much it made me cry down in my heart. Well, my husband has heard about Kathy Mattea. matter of fact he told me tonight in the car he has a few of her albums at his perants house he needs to get sometime here soon. My husband and I both are Christians and Love the Lord with all our heart. God is good!

  • Like others here this is the first verson of this exquisite Christmas song I've

heard. I've listened to it every year since. My husband bought the cd w/ Mark

Lowry singing, three years ago. Mary Did You Know is a beautifully written song

& the other singers I've heard also do a fabulous job, but Kathy's verson will

always be my favorite. Praise God- Jesus Christ is the Great I AM! Merry

Christmas & God Bless us everyone.

  • Amen thumps up

  • this is an awesome version

  • And Easter...so beautiful, so hopeful.

  • thank you so much for singing my favorite song. and i love that you put the words up as well

  • i love this song, so simple and beautiful really an inspiration from the heavenly father!!

    praise the lord !!

  • Praise Jesus! Thank you to the singer of this song. Very touching. I love you Jesus!

  • This is my favorite christmas song too. I am playing it on the piano. I added my own style to it, not the fun way to make it seem happy. I used soothing ways and made my voice sound out, and anything to make it how I imagined in my mind.

  • Yes, Jesus Christ is the Great, I AM!

  • @MrCairokid In truth, like Mary, those of us who are willing can be made vessels for Him. Mary was NOT sinless but a godly woman who had a lot of courage, given the time she was living in. And let's not forget poor Joseph. A right decent fella he was. A lesser man would have thought her either deranged or an adulterous liar, and handed her to the pharisees. They were of the lineage of King David, which was crucial to prophecy, but they were also godly parents.

  • This is also my favorite Christmas song.

    Great Job by the artist

  • I saw Kathy in concert last year and she was wonderful!

  • You know, I'm not a fan of Christmas music at all, but this song is truly beautiful. I love it.

  • The most amazing gift the world could ever receive---Our Savior! To think of the way that Mary was blessed by the birth of Jesus, it makes me realize how thankful I should be!!!!!!!!! Halelujah to THE FATHER OF OUR SALVATION!!!

  • Merry Christmas Everyone May Gods perfect gift bless you all The Greatest Gift ever still gives the Gift of perfect love , The Gift Of Jesus ,

  • A beautiful song sung beautifully by Kathy.

  • Ready? Jesus Christ returning May 21, 2011 4 Judgment. C dimstar4now if u care.

  • Thanks so much for posting this beautiful song!

  • When you judge your neighbor you judge Me first. When you mock and persecute your brothers and sisters you persecute Me first. When you pierce another by your words and actions you pierce Me first. When you reject your ability to defend life, you do not defend Me for I am life within you. When you place the world in front of your Creator, you reject Me. Seek the world and lose your soul. Seek your Master and you will find your place in My Kingdom. - Jesus

  • My church back home does a beautiful rendition of this song. I agree that it is the best Christmas song ever.

WISHING YOU ALL A JOYOUS AND PEACEFUL CHRISTMAS.

  • Truly a very talented singer! I hope everyone has a wonderful Merry Christmas and a healthy Happy New Year 2010.

  • I immediately disliked Kathy's rendition due to her POOR pronunciation. She is singing "Mary didjew know" instead of "Mary DID YOU know." A choral director's dilemma and something that every choirister immediately learns not to do. Similar to - wouldja, couldja, didjew - drives me nuts. Pay attention to details. She ought to know better. Ruined a beautiful, albeit liturgically incorrect song.

  • It's a song of praise for Jesus Christ- why all the judgment?

  • @gnosticimp Good pronunciation is essential in the proper setting. One- this rendition of the song has more of a country style to it, so it's acceptable to sing "didjew" rather than "did you". Proper pronunciation is something that is essential in a choir where many voices need to blend, but considering this is a solo she has no one to blend with. It's all about appealing to the audience.

  • Your critiquing indicates that you missed the message. I hope you take the time to listen to the words carefully and not focus on the pronunciation as Jesus is the only way to everlasting life. Bless you.

  • dont diss on the person just because of the way she says things. gosh dang it its christmas try to be nice to people and give good comments.

  • Why not enjoy the meaning and spirit of the artist and song, if you can do better GOD bless if not, just be quiet and stop be an unpaid music credit.

  • all i can say is, you are an idiot. I think she did fantastic. learn to appreciate everyone and their gift and what they have to offer.

  • Merry Christmas and God bless to you all. This is truly one of the most beautiful renditions of this song I have ever heard.

  • what she said in the beginning she said this song explains the meaning of christmas and she is so right. without christ coming to the earth as a man and died and rose again i would be riding on my way to hell but im not because of his love and compassion for all of our sinful hearts. if you havent seen the passion i encourage you to watch it. have a merry merry christmas

  • WOW!! What a voice!!!!

  • such a beautiful song, tugs at the heart strings :-) Merry Christmas & God Bless You! x

  • Thanks so much for posting, love the song and it's meaning,

  • this is so beautiful. bless you Kathy, high praise be to Christ. Peace n love.

  • This was the first version I had ever heard of this song. My son was 6 months old when I got this CD, and we didn't know it yet, but he was born with Autism. I would rock and walk, Cuddle and hold...Anything to comfort him. This was the only thing that would calm him, soothe him and get him to sleep. If I didn't have it playing, I was singing it. I have raised a wonderful child who happens to have Autism, but more importantly, who love the Lord with all his heart! The Lord is awesome!

  • @Mzgriffy Bless you! You sound like an awesome mother and when I read your story it me think of how blessed your child is.

  • I've loved the Good News CD for years. This version of Mary Did You Know is my absolute favorite! I listen to the CD through out the year!

  • Can you say "goose bumps"??? :)

  • I borned in Vietnam and never hear this song before untill I live here in US. What a great American's song. I love it. God bless you all.

  • Thanks for sharing this....beautiful and I love you added the lyrics...

  • I love this song, I agree with 333daughteroftheking. That part definately gets to me also!!!

  • Where Can I get a downloadable copy of this song? plz help me

  • This tune is available for a small fee as an mp3 download from amazon . com.

It's also on Kathy Mattea's CD "GOOD NEWS".

  • This is my favorite Christmas song. I try to sing along but can never make it past the "kissed the face of God" part before I get all choked up. It's beautifully written and lyrically powerful. Thanks for sharing. \o/

  • I so wish there was a youtube video of the original polygram records music video of this song by Kathy Mattea... it was very moving.

  • This is my first time ever hearing this song. I really like it.

  • This was one of my Mother-in-Law's favorite Christmas songs!! I got this on a cassette for her one year and 2 years later we lost her and I got the cassette back and I cherish this song alog with that memory always!!

  • Mattea was right in the beginning - this song is the very original spirit of Christmas.

  • her voice and this song make me want to cry,... its such a sad song...

  • it's not sad, it just tells of the power that Christ had and his purpose that he came to fulfill...that's a very happy thing if you ask me!

  • This song is Fantastic. Just heard it and instantly fell in love with it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i just love this song! the words are so touching!

  • Wonderful lyrics, Awesome music and above all the performance is GREAT. God bless you all...!!

  • Wonderfull song and performence. Thanks.

  • AMAZING...

i cry every time i hear this song, and no one sings it with such feeling - kathy's gift is truly from God...

  • the best song ever!!!!

  • As a Catholic Christian, my answer to this beautiful song is :

Yes, yes, yes, Mary did indeed know it all.

For Catholic/orthodox Christians, Mary knew her part in man's salvation, from the time she was created. For Protestant/Evangelical Christians, she at least knew it from the times of the Angel Gabriel's visitation and her cousin Elilizabeth's greeting.

Mary's Magnificat underscores her understanding that she was the barer of God.

  • can you just listen to the song and enjoy it and leave all your little catholic philosophy out of this...just worship God not all the saints and mary...

  • Kathy Mattea has one of those special voices that don't come along often. Her two Christmas albums, "Good News" & "Joy for Christmas Day" are the two best Christmas albums ever. What a blessing this song is!

  • mjlb66 The beauty of this song is it's simplicity and character. We all have the opportunity to "Touch the Face of God" more often than we know. Kathy's voice was a perfect match for the message.

  • Beautiful song great singer this song gives me chills every time i listen to it

  • It is a Prayer and Kathy M. does it magnificently... My wife and I were in SC for a weekend and had a hard day. In the motel room we heard this song on TV and I cried like a baby.

What a beautiful and delivered song.

  • The Holy Spirit was with you....how wonderful it is to experience. Blessings ever.....Hope

  • My favorite version of this song. My favorite Christmas cd, Kathy Mattea's "Good News" everyone should have this. Listen to it all year long.

  • Kathy's is my favorite version of this song. I heard it first before I herd anyone else's. It made me cry then, it makes me cry now.

  • Kathy is a great singer and actually when I heard this song the first time, it became one of my favorite songs as well. It's just a wonderful song.

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice she has, and i get the chills too at " when you kiss your little baby you kissed the face of God"...and beautiful comments, good to know that even in these times there are real christians that would stand up for the Lord! Praise the Lord.

  • Lindo!!!Beutiful song!!! Beautiful version!!! I like this song!!! (L)

  • i think her version is my favourite...

i absolutely love the line 'when you kiss your little baby, then you've kissed the face of god?'

gives me chills evertime i hear it

  • This is the best song made 4 Christmas

  • Christianity is one of the biggest religions in the world!

    don't make fun of Jesus

    he made miracles happen

i hope that one day you regret saying that christians are stupid

  • why did jesus walk on water had he no money for aboat?

  • Listen, I'm not going to get into a 3 day ordeal with you and waste anymore time than I have already typing this message. So I'll say this and this will be the end of it. Find something better to do with your time. Build a ship in a bottle, fly a kite. Hell; eat a dog turd if that floats your boat. But leave these people alone. They're here to listen to the song and have a good time. Not waste time and energy reading your text. Later dude. Have a good day.

  • you stupid christians will be telling me next jesus turned water into wine.

  • Jesus did turn water into wine and many other miracles.

luappmek23 - You came to this video looking for something to believe in. Instead of dismissing Jesus, maybe you can look to him and the lessons he taught for answers.

Christianity is over 2000 years old and the biggest religion on the planet.

Open your heart and your mind and the New Testament - especially the first 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - and perhaps the Holy Spirit will come to you as well.

  • Amen. People come on here looking to get into a fight. Don't let them take away from this beautiful video you've posted. I love this song and the lyrics. God bless!

  • @bctvguy Love your comment! Except, Christianity isn't the biggest religion on the planet - Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism all outnumber Christianity.

  • @groovingurly - You're misinformed.

Christianity is the chosen religion of almost 1/3 of all the people on Earth.

At most - Muzlims, Buddhists and Hindus are each about 1/5.

  • spoken like someone who needs some direction and guidance which if you open yourself up and ask him he'll give to you. why not try it?

  • @luappmek23 You stupid atheists will soon be asking why God sent you to hell. You commit the unforgivable sin: reject Jesus and God will reject you. When you die dress for extreme heat. Suppose you are right and there is nothing after death. I've lived a good, joyful life, and have lost nothing. Suppose I'm right, you will burn forever. Free will. Learn or burn. How many miracles have you witnessed? I pity you all the way to the gates of hell. Your pride and vanity will be your end.

  • she has a very beautiful voice. this is singing. why isn't she better known.

  • She is singing for then President Bill Clinton at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. If you really look hard, you can see him, Hillary and Chelsea there on the front row (at a distance)

  • I have always thought that this woman was the most under-rated voice in music. I love her. Her song "Where've you been" is incredibly moving. She is just incredible and I wish they would have given her more credit for being amazing! This song rocks too. I have done it at church several times and people are always happy with it.

  • This IS a very beautiful song.I've listened to it thousands of times & can still listen over&over again.Love the video by the original writers, Mark Lowry & Buddy Greene. PS I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some info on a Christmas song called," On My Father's Side".I heard it at a concert just prior to Christmas 08, and parts of it are still going through my head, but I can't seem to find any info,,,like who wrote it or recorded it etc, Thanks

  • God Bless you

  • this is the first time i have encountered her version....i love this song and i do not just think about Christmas...this song, i live every day with..i am blessed that i have jesus...i am methodist and sometimes feel bad that we (methodists) do not give enough "kudos" to Mary...i mean we do...she is the mother of our Lord...but this song praises both our Lord, and the woman (did she know??) I LOVE THIS...keep this song in your heart everyday..it is a gift!!!!

  • I've always loved this song, and Kathy does a wonderful job of it!!

  • Kathy Mattea has a great voice and i appreciate that she uses her nice and trained voice to sing for Our Lord and i also thank you "bctvguy" to prepare this song here.
