@CannonTigers This song was NOT inspired by the Monkees! Brian wrote it with his dad Murray but credited as Reggie Dunbar. It was written in an hour and had to to with the break up of Capital Records. Written on March 31st 1969, the Monkees were all done by that point.
Always get a kick out of the lyric "When I laid down on my bed, I heard voices in my head". Nice track, with Al, Carl, and Mike getting in some good leads. Always dig the BB songs where everyone works as a team with the vocals.
Three days I wish we could take back in American History. 1. 9/11; 2. December 7, 1941' 3. The day Brian Wilson said, "Hey, I wonder if Mike would want to sing with us."
- Yeah I love Denny, he was sooo good lookin, but I'd have to say that if i was a young girl back then I'd have gone for the chubby lead singer- poor guy wouldn't have stood a chance- i'd be all over that. lol
amen - carl had talent akin to brian, but carl was not mentally ill, hence his 'genius' was in his stability. Brain cancer is a horrifying dz. I often wonder about the roots of such illness in the Wilson family. Poor Carl - but his boys carry on the tradition or did for a while?
There are only two singers in the past 50 years that I would have described as "having the voice of an angel". They were Karen Carpenter and Carl Wilson. RIP.
@FishOnTwoWheels - agreed, but may I add to this list, Kasim Sultan who sang lead in 'Utopia', one of Todd Rundgren's many incarnations. He sang like a choirboy - as does Vince Gill .....
I became a Beach Boys fan at about age 9, 1966. Went to first concert age 10, opening song was Darlin', then was hooked forever. So when Break Away came out it was so cool to hear the old BBs were back. I played it over and over that Summer. It's still a fav BB song of mine.
Bruce Johnson also has a Super Great Voice. he has to have, he replaced Brian as a Background Singer. Mike Love did most of the Vocals early in their Career
@stwads For me.. It brings back old memories of high school.. uncertainties fall in love feelings. my parents who cared for me..a forgotten world that hurts while listening to these sounds..
What a wonderful song! It's ideal on every side including fact that 2 my favourite Beach Boys (& IMO the best singers of the band) share chief leads in that. Esp. I like Al's part, i.e. chorus, fine melody, better than in verses. But overall "Break Away"... see my 1st sentence. :)
@ashie259 you are correct, I'm not sure, but perhaps Brian is still in his room ( just kidding) I always liked Carl's voice better anyway................
@NAMDOG54 Yep, totally agree. As the years have gone by, I've found myslelf enjoying the Carl-led Beach Boys stuff most of all. Brian composing and producing and Carl singing - that's the ideal format as far as I'm concerned.
it's interesting that Murray Wilson, the father, wrote the lyrics with Brian composing the music for this. The lyrics are a little weird and don't seem to relate to the boys. The music and voices are great. Mike Love is an integral part of their success. The band he has now is very professional and good even if it isn't the original band.
Man Carl and Brian Wilson were blessed with big time talent, they remind me in a way of Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus...Carl Wilson's singing is heaven.
Al is very underrated, he played bass in the band in the beginning and he even took over the high vocals for a concert tour when Brian freaked out about perfoming live in 64. They got Bruce after that, but Al is an original!
@Karateworm Yes, live and for a majority of the earlier recorded songs, but there are a lot of songs that he played bass on, all through their career. Its pretty well documented. There was an instance where David Marks was still in the band and he took over for Brian for a few shows playing bass and singing the high parts.
Mike is very ....what's the word ? misunderstood !! He is an excellent role model for all young people the world over. If everyone was like him there would be no wars and the world would be full of LOVE !!!!
@FuckingStanz Those were the words I was really searching for.....but somehow the others came out. Do you think Mike Love is secretly controlling people's minds and thoughts ??
I also disagree that Bruce Johnston does not/did not fit in w/ the Beach Boys. He made many important contributions to the group over the decades that he has been with them. He added a sweet voice, musicality, and producing talent, among other things....oh yeah, songwriting, of which "Disney Girls" is the pinnacle.
@bobareebop - If only Bruce had been a BB from the start! Mike never belonged. To me, the dream line-up would have been the Wilson brothers, plus Glen Campbell (yes, he was a BB) on rhythm guitar instead of Al, and Bruce instead of Mike. Now THAT would have been a band!
I totally agree. In addition, he also proved he could go it alone and had some solo successes without them. I reckon he tends to be overlooked because his personality just never generated any drama.
I'm sorry folks, but, Bruce Johnston does not belong with The Beach Boys. I am sure he is a good guy and he has been with the group most of the time when Brian had his issues with drugs, but, I just don't accept the Beach Boys other than the 5 originals. I don't know. I am not trying to be mean or anything, but, groups like this doesn't come around very often.
I disagree - simply put, he has been integral to their live and studio production since singing on California Girls. He also wrote what is (for me) one of their top numbers - Disney Girls (and Brian agrees).
Don't preach to us that Bruce Johnston doesn't belong with The Beach Boys. He's a great singer, musician and songwriter (he has won a grammy). He has been very important to studio production and performing live. The Beach Boys lineup has probably changed more than you know. In fact it happens with nearly all bands at some stage and Bruce Johnston definitely contributed a great deal to The Beach Boys.
Al Jardine was an original member. David Marks was hired when Al quit after their first single. He rejoined 14 months later when Brian started skipping concerts. I agree Bruce doesn' t really belong. His easy listening sensibility has nothing to do with rock and roll. I find his stuff unlistenable. Just shmaltz. I'm sure he is a nice person, but no. Also, I don't think he was important to their live sound. Their best live album was recorded in 1973 when he wasn't with them.
@wouldntyoulike2know Me too! I wish we still could.... but he allways was cute, when he was young and when he became older he was gorgeos! He was a warm and charming man
