After a night of drinking beers and smoking a buddy crashed at my place and we listened to it for kicks and curiosity's sake. Was the dream already dead then? Hard to say. I have a single HNIC LP with a yellow cover called 'Great Moments in Hockey' released some time in the early seventies, it doesn't have the whole song either, though, unfortunately. Also, screw you, TSN. Your sensationalistic, dim-witted, tabloid/talk radio-style coverage appeals to the casuals, but for a die-hard fanatic like me, it's unwatchable. I hope CBC takes its song back someday.

Miss this theme song (especially this older version) so much. My dad and I used to change the channel to CBC French at the end of the game because they usually played the full end credits with the song, whereas the CBC English kept cutting it off or put other sounds over it (usually promos for other shows).

Love the extra percussion in the longer version.

I found out just a little while ago that the lady who wrote the jingle, (cant recall her name), was asking a very high amount of money. Its a pitty that greed can end a canadian tradition. Though I miss the classic I do like the new Hockey night in Canada theme. But if in future they can get it back at a RESIONABLE cost than I think they should do it.

Yeah, tough to say. It's a beloved song which doesn't quite get the exposure anymore on TSN. As much as we'd all have loved to have seen it stay with the CBC and HNIC, Dolores Claman was asking for just a bit too much from a public broadcaster (although everything worked out for her, in any case).

As you say, the new one's pretty good too, though. I don't think they could have found a better replacement. In 20 years people will be just as fond of that one.

This is not the original theme song. The original ran from 1952 to 1968 when this one replaced it.

It's a DAMN shame CBC lost this song. now a whole generation of youngpeople will grow up and not have a clue what this song is or means. To me, this is Canada's second National anthem. I remember many a spring night tuning into CBC to watch another embroiled playoff hockey battle and this song opening the show. Every time I hear this song I remeber with fondness the Montreal Canadiens of the late 70's, the New York Islanders of the early 80's and the Oilers of the late 80's.

Growing up in the 80's when I was a kid, especially around the winter and into spring, I always looked forward to watching Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night on CBC television right into the Stanley Cup. It was those days that always reminded me of watching The Toronto Maple Leafs go head to head with another team, one of the reasons that I grew up to be a Maple Leaf fan (even though I'm from Michigan and live within striking distance from Detroit).

This is the version they used all thru the 70's. Then they kind of electrified it a bit and changed it up a few times as they went. Til the MORONS blew it and lost the rights to the song to TSN. Now they got Neil Peart from Rush to do a new version. Its pretty good.

Just found this and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to hear it again -- in its original form!!! Grew up in a small Canadian border town in the 50's and 60's (you may have heard of it -- it's called Detroy-it) and was almost as big a Leafs fan as Wings cuz HNIC was all we got every Saturday night.
