Anyone know what orchestra/group recorded this original tune? I know the Toronto Symphony Orchestra brass section recorded the most recent one. But I prefer the original. Anyone??
And I totally agree with every single comment about the CBC letting this one slip by them. BIG MISTAKE.
@ROBCRX What is wrong with the TSN version? When I listened to the last version that CBC had, it didn't sound as good anymore because it sounded mechanical!
If this didnt warn Canada that the C.B.C. had lost the spirit of the Canadian dream I dont know what possibly could. Hey Canada, abandon the major cities and leave em to Mr. Brown. Im, sorry but its over. How could they do it? How could we let them take this from us? Hey, the people demanded that they bring Coke clasasic back when the tried to change it , maybe we could do something about this eh? Well, cant we? Oh yah I forgot, we are a minority in our father's father's country.
Oh my God. I had this album. What ever happened to it? The last time I listened to it I was 16 yrs old. After a night of drinking beers and smoking a buddy crashed at my place and we listened to it for kicks and curiosity's sake. Was the dream already dead then? Hard to say. Your breaking my maple leaf heart Canada. For real.
I thought that the Canadian dream had been dead a while now but when they had the f--kin nerve to change this I couldnt believe it. How could we just sit idle and let it happen. When a Christmas tree is to be called a festive bush in a highschool and the Lords prayer removed in the morning, did anybody wonder WTF we were letting go of. And the C.B.C. ? Dont get me started. Roll over and play dead Canada. We stand on guard for thee? Who are you kidding eh?
I have a single HNIC LP with a yellow cover called 'Great Moments in Hockey' released some time in the early seventies, it doesn't have the whole song either, though, unfortunately. Also, screw you, TSN. Your sensationalistic, dim-witted, tabloid/talk radio-style coverage appeals to the casuals, but for a die-hard fanatic like me, it's unwatchable. I hope CBC takes its song back someday.
Man o' man! That record album is gold dust! You better have it locked in a safe with floor pressure alarms and laser trips. Thanks for posting the classic theme that us over-40s cannot ever forget.
@MisterEvasion Hey man, I may only be 23, but this song is forever in my mind as well. TSN ruined it with their mix, but I hope one day CBC wakes up and realizes that it's the one taxpayer expense most Canadians don't care about, GET US OUR SONG BACK!
Miss this theme song (especially this older version) so much. My dad and I used to change the channel to CBC French at the end of the game because they usually played the full end credits with the song, whereas the CBC English kept cutting it off or put other sounds over it (usually promos for other shows).
I'm old enough to remember this theme from when they would play it after the final game of that year's Cup. It's a shame the importance of this theme will die because of the almighty dollar.
"Hello Canada, and hockey fans across the United States and New Foundland, I'm Foster Hewitt, and tonight, it will be the Toronto Maple Leafs visting the Montreal Canadiens here on Hockey Night in Canada"
Thank you for this! It's the real Canadian National Anthem :-) It's nice to hear the original again. I grew up on this version of this song. Shame on the CBC for letting it go...
Classic....When i hear this i think of Great Memories of the Super 70's and watching Hockey Night In Canada from my home in Lindsay and Renfrew,Ontario,Canada.
MAN this bringzz back so much cool nights with my Dad (rest his soul) enjoying MY team HABS, thank you ever so much for posting this . You made my day.
this was our Q..to get out the peanut, chips and pop/ beer and ready ourselves for a Saturday evening of Hockey Night in Canada ... CBC was one of the few stations we could pick up then... purely Canadian.
I agree with everyone who thinks the CBC goofed in letting this masterpiece go. On the other hand, CTV/TSN isn't letting it get dusty, if you know what I mean!
Right, I'm sure you'd love a taxpayer supported institution paying millions extra to get a *song*, of all things. Yes, that certainly wouldn't have raised the ire of the "no taxes" crowd, who hate the CBC anyway.
Quite a few people seem to think that the CBC should be faulted for losing the rights to this song. I assume you are one of them, given your "CBC shake your heads" comment.
But, really, what were they to do? Pay a ridiculous amount of public money for a jingle? Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
@StephenHarpersNutsak Actually my friend you make a very good point. I found out just a little while ago that the lady who wrote the jingle, (cant recall her name), was asking a very high amount of money. Its a pitty that greed can end a canadian tradition. Though I miss the classic I do like the new Hockey night in Canada theme. But if in future they can get it back at a RESIONABLE cost than I think they should do it.
Yeah, tough to say. It's a beloved song which doesn't quite get the exposure anymore on TSN. As much as we'd all have loved to have seen it stay with the CBC and HNIC, Dolores Claman was asking for just a bit too much from a public broadcaster (although everything worked out for her, in any case).
As you say, the new one's pretty good too, though. I don't think they could have found a better replacement. In 20 years people will be just as fond of that one.
It's a DAMN shame CBC lost this song. now a whole generation of youngpeople will grow up and not have a clue what this song is or means. To me, this is Canada's second National anthem. I remember many a spring night tuning into CBC to watch another embroiled playoff hockey battle and this song opening the show. Every time I hear this song I remeber with fondness the Montreal Canadiens of the late 70's, the New York Islanders of the early 80's and the Oilers of the late 80's.
@theraj662 I fully agree with you. Growing up in the 80's when I was a kid, especially around the winter and into spring, I always looked forward to watching Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night on CBC television right into the Stanley Cup. It was those days that always reminded me of watching The Toronto Maple Leafs go head to head with another team, one of the reasons that I grew up to be a Maple Leaf fan (even though I'm from Michigan and live within striking distance from Detroit).
@theraj662 I'm not sure what you mean... they play this rendition at the start of every weekday game, as well as on SportsCentre. The new theme is solely reserved for Hockey Night... am I wrong?
@theraj662 completely agree. im 14 now, and i remember this song from when i was 8 or 9 watching HNIC. when i grow up, and have kids im going to make damn sure they know this song by heart.
@theraj662 Yepper? It lived and breathed in the hearts of so many boys growing up, (mine included) It was the kind of thing that made us stop everything we were doing as our hearts started to beat a little faster. I know its simply sentemental but this really makes me break down. hEY C.B.C " TAKE OFF EH! YOU SUCK YOU HOSERS!"
This is the version they used all thru the 70's. Then they kind of electrified it a bit and changed it up a few times as they went. Til the MORONS blew it and lost the rights to the song to TSN. Now they got Neil Peart from Rush to do a new version. Its pretty good.

Same here ... every winter Saturday night we'd watch it on Channel 9. I still remember the sponsors as much as the games ... Dan Kane Chev-Olds before the game, Molson, ScotiaBank, Ford of Canada, Canadian Tire, Esso
yeah, this sure brings back some good memories. i can remember as a kid, this music would just get me so pumped up to watch the game. i even remeber the second half of the theme. i believe they played that, after the game, and all the post game stuff was over. thanks for posting!
Wow, the original! Reminds me of watching hockey when it was a great game. Thank you so much for posting it. The old "Hockey Night In Canada" with the hockey stick in the middle. Gotta be from the early 70's??
