The child was kept a secret from the children who were happy until they reached a certain age when they were told, hence, some of them walking away when they understood the price of their happiness. Rather like the first world and Africa - not many people walk away or face up to the plight of earths poorest children.
It's not kept a secret and the ones who stay don't fight it, do they?
