Virginia was one of the few Southern states where its people and rulers didn't secede mainly or heavily for slavery. A true state of its time of freedom that refused to use its men to invade other states to keep together an involuntary Union.

Yes indeed, Virginia was a beacon of Freedom of sorts. She could have just as easily stayed with the union, but the people there believed in Freedom, and like you said, a voluntary union, not a union held together by force.

Yes, thats the name. John W. Ellis the governor of North Carolina during part of the Civil War was a Rowan county native and buried in the Salisbury cemetery along with some yankee invaders as well...
