I'm relatively new to the 3D world, but I've found that Modo and Cinema 4D is great for newbies because they are easy to use and learn and much cheaper than most. Just under $1,000 US for each of those. Blender is incredibly complex and hard to get into, which is why I opted for a commercial product instead.
@Jesterclown17 I went from maya to blender and it was torture. However, If you stick with it. Pick a project and work through in blender, It starts to gel. Blender really is a powerful program. 100% free. You just have to take the time to learn its weird quirks.
it took you until like 2:30 just to start answering the stupid question. sorry that just kinda pisses me off cus you very easily couldve trimmed that crap off of your video with just about any video editing software.
Ok im a complete 3D software virgin, im on a mac, im not interested in animation in the slightest (im an illustrator, only interested in still frames), free would be great but im willing to pay for professional quality software, i want to create a mixture of organic and industrial imagery (much like the oddworld game imagery), which software would be best suited for me? Many thanks for any helpful advice!
Hi. Aprox by the year 2020 a laptop will reach the human brain potential for processing data which means that there is a huge market waiting for hundreds of billions dollars to be sold or invested in humanoid robots and intelligent systems and the beginning of the bigger industry ever maid in human history. Search on Google luisbeck007 you will find the most complete humanoid robot list in the World, good information and interesting issues.
ZBrush and Modo are totally different beasts, one a sculpting soft, the other a subdivision modeler (Not high end? Modo is considered the best subd modeler ATM?!) They complement each other wonderfully.
I've only ever used Blender, although I plan to pick up either MAX or Maya, since artists proficient in these programs seem to be in demand in just about any market, from video games to movies. Although its gonna be a bit sad having to move away from Blender's workflow (And no, it wasn't "TEH SUCKZ" for me - probably because I was a first time user without any prior experience in 3D creation), at least I've got some basic knowledge that can be used across the board.
I like Maya, Lightwave, 3D Studio Max, and Maxon Cinema 4D. But, I think by far the best Animation Software is Houdini Master Version 10 by Sidefx. The fluid dynamics are unrivalled. I have also found that the rendering it comes with is excellent. The integrated Rendering Application (Mantra) is as good as Pixar's Renderman or Mental Ray. I would even say that it is better in many respects Notably light interactions and general special effects.
Some companies allow the artist to use what tools they like to make generic assets; but they may be very strict in other areas of production were you must use a particular application.
More important issue is what skills you NEED! If you want to get into 3d you must be an Artist and problem solver. Learn how to draw, paint and sculpt in the real world because those skills are used in any application. Software will always change, its your basic skills that need the most attention.
Stevejjd. I agree. I think what you saying is more of a present thinking compared to when I did this video two year ago. Nowadays, digital sculpt is so advanced as well as common software that being an artist is the order of the day. Way because when, owning the hardware and software was most relevant.
anyone know how hard it is to get a job using modo. ive never used any other software, modo just seems really easy to use so i never bothered with any other, i have 3ds max 9 but ive never even opened it.
Nice Nice Video. I really loved your video. Youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed, check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have built 3 Channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to working on.
Good video. I've experimented briefly with lots of different software. I really enjoy modeling in Modo. Great GUI and one of the fastest modeling softwares out there. It's not a complete package right now, but the up and coming version 401 contains a TON of great updates.
It's going to be a package to reckon with a couple years from now when it is a complete package.
It would really be a good idea to learn both. It shouldn't be too hard. Maya may be a better choice if you are more interested in "something other than games.".
question. I am thinking of getting into 3ds max cuz u have axcess to it.
But I am not sure if I'd like to get into gaming industry.
So what I want to know is: is 3ds mainly jsut for gaming? Is there any chance to find decent work in tv or film animation or graphics if someone knows 3ds?
Thanks, this is a great video you made.
I use modo and I've used formZ, solidworks, zbrush before. I love modo and zbrush
Max has fallen a bit though which is why AD bought Maya and now XSI. It used to be that Max had bits and pieces in film and broadcast, but they had a lock on the game space, but Maya started moving into that area and XSI really attracted a pretty large game dev crowd. I've become pretty addicted to modo for SubD modeling though...don't know if that's good or bad.
(It's a shame Messiah Studio isn't on OS X though) Personally I'm a Maya/modo/ZBrush user, but I'm looking at C4D, looking at Silo and looking at Messiah and everything else really like most people once they get into that intermediate to advanced. I thought it was kind of funny when one person tried to say Houdini was the standard.
If people want to do animation and are beginners I would almost recommend a combo of Silo and Messiah Studio first as a good balance between low cost, ease of use, clear direction and a really advanced and helpful communities.
I don't know that I would be recommending Blender as much as you are right now. It is free, but at this point the interface leaves a lot to be desired, even for people that have done 3D for a while indiscriminate buttons, unclear terms will drive novices away from 3d quicker than you can "wait, but..."
Modo'a actually fine,I like it. I use maya for commercial work, since i do some freelance work i swap files with other 3d artist, and of course they don't wate their time with Blender.
I, being poor, use Blender 3d. And I have to say, it is a great program, especially since its free. Blender 3d is capable of making movies that look Pixar good (search Big buck bunny to see what I'm talking about.) it doesn't have some of the features other commercial programs have. But it is constantly growing, with thousands of passionate scripters always adding new features. I recommend it for anyone who is just learning or doesn;t have a lot of cash to spend.
Movies such as Shrek,Ice Age,The Lord of the Rings,Beowulf, and so on are made in Maya so to me this is the best 3d pachage but it is very complexe, if you want to become a professional i suggest you use this aplication and also use an external modeling program such as Zbrush.
it doesn't matter what you start of with simply because the basics transfer across all the programs, plus the only reason they use maya is because you can completely change it the maya they use is totally different from the off the shelf version plus they also use in House tools you can' get your hands on
yeh i personally have been using max and zbrush ive been modeling a base mesh in 3ds max and then exporting to zbrush and adding all the mega detail and export in displacement and normal map...this allows you to rig(animate) stuff in 3ds max really easy...but i guess Maya is better with stuff like that i guess for big mega poly scenes it loads quicker and doesnt crash as much... but ive tried maya and it was more complicated. too noobs u should try a free prog that is like 3ds max
I use 3DS Max but I'm not that great. I'm holding out for a better computer. I like to do texture more than anything, so I disabuse Max for CS3 and esp. Painter X.
very good overview man. i've been using maya at school for the past couple months. recently i learned how to use blender and wings 3d. theyre both excelent pieces of software considering they're free. and exporting objs to maya couldnt be easier. i read somewhere today somone wrote a script to export liquid simulations from blender to 3ds max.
thanks. yea it can be nice. kinda takes away from learning to model in maya. am still thinking of buying a student license to the ultimate package of maya, but thatd be the rest of my taxes. kinda tough decision. whats your opinion? mine is pretty much why spend money when i won't be able to use it commercially?
At $7K maya doesn't consider the need of upstarts entering the industry. You will have to break into the industry the best way you can and leap across the gap from student to professional with whatever tools you have available. I do know it's more difficult learning two modelers at the same time but good to know more than one. There's a dog free tutorial at (w3).simply*com that will help you for organic modeling in Maya. it's quick and fast. I used it.
Thanks for the insight....what do you think of Modo, by Luxology. It seems to be a fast growing and being taken up by many people....What are your thoughts of this software. ??
Modo is really hot. It's UV mapping system is really fast. It is a modeler that's quickly closing in on Zbrush. There's no ZB3 on the Mac yet there's plenty of room for a new contender.
Thanks for the reply...Great isn't it...hey but Zbrush for mac is just around the corner....suppose to be very soon...the think i like is that Modo works pretty well with a Wacom tablet and the Cintqu...i think i spelled that wrong..I do find Zbrush kindof....laborius...many steps for what takes only a few on Modo. All the best man...You have a generous spirit and thanks for sharing...it really really helps.
This is by far...the SINGLE-MOST valuable video post I have seen thus far!!! Being in the design/build construction field and making a few changes in the area of software...I have been having the hardest time with deciding what my next move was...and now, I atleast have a decent foundation to start with. 5 Stars!!!
Hey Thanks for this good review / tips, i have decided to get me maya 2008 student version but it will only be avaible for 14months but i can rebuy it then... i see alot of tv seriers use maya i reg it from camera view points and moving how its done so i say thanks for the info ;)
Beside EIAS? I just rendered my first Maya project. It's really good, but I think C4D is faster. I don't generally don't render my own project, I have a partner in NYC that does most of my EIAS renders. So it's hard to say. Now that I'm using very fast computers I will probably render more.
I use Blender mostly. for modeling on buildings and such, there is a software called Google Sketchup. It's also freeware and you basically make lines along the 3 different axes and connect them to form faces and various things. you are limited to animating though, but you can export your models as objects.
Don't use wings...what ever you do, don't use wings...blender3d is WAY better at modeling, and also supports rendering, animation, game engine, physics, soft body, water sim, video compositing, and its free...
I really enjoyed this video. I think you should do another video and go into detail about the more popular use 3D software like Maya, 3D Max, LightWave, etc.
thanks for your reply, appreciated! but just have one simple question, what's the difference between maya and 3dsmax? i was getting to learn 3dsmax till you caught me with your talk about maya! a bit confused now! help please
I have been using Lightwave since 96, for both games and both History and Discovery Channel documentary work. I also use 3DS Max at work, but only because I have to.
whatever its all pipeline, if you buy one peice of software make it zbrush, you can output meshes via obj and it integrates seamlessly with photoshop, offers you a truly revolutionary scuplting, uvw, painting solution. you could use blender as your 3dstudio app which is free, but the core production tool Is and will be for the considerable future Pixologics Zbrush 3.
hello my name is eric i like the things you say iam in washington,dc ido some asst teaching at the premier animation hs in dc mckin, tech we have 100 workstations of maya and a motion capure studio but on a personal note iam creating my own short film urban superheros
and i wanted to know if you or someone yu known and do conpect drawing in pencil front and side veiw
Me being a blender user for the past 4 years roughly, I would recomand it.
it is a complete program, you don't need any other program. And it is growing extreamly fast. Not much more time until it is nearly as good as professionel softwares.
It isn't the easiest program you can use but with time you can learn all by your self with tutorials.
This is definitely the best program for someone who wants to so some nice 3D work without using $1.
Great Video, I am glad you did not edit the technical difficulties; it made it more personable.
I downloaded Blender and was searching for tutorials on how to use it when I found your youtube ™ post so now I have more confidence in this software though I still do not now how to use it.
When it auto installed and launched it searched for another program called Python and sent me to their page for that FREE software.
So it dose need additional software to run but it is still all FREE.
I was going to give a video responce but i decided not to because im drinking beer.. anyways cool vid you forgot the infamous one of all for free software Milkshape 3d!
Thank you for sparing me any 'spirited" reponse, but I know already...I cursed :) (humor) I didn't cut it out. Still, you would be a great person to give a review of Max. Not familiar with MilkShake :) Teach us about it.
See, that's why I don't have a cam now!! tsch tsch. I didn't have a stand. I keep dropping it. I went to the apple store but they didn't carry the acessories in the store.
Also there are software to edit video.

WTF is MoNdo???? Did you mean Modo? LOL
If took you 10 freaking minutes to say these few things..
That Softimage was used heavily in the 90's
That Maya is a high end 3d application bought my the company that owns 3ds Max which is used by many game companies.
That Z-brush flips you out with the detail subdivision displacement mapping.
Clocked in at one minute...
Brother you need to edit your videos and cut out all the rhetoric mumble.
GET TO THE FUCKING POINT!!!
:))

For the past two years, I have been using Maya for school work. I'm not much of a 3D modeler, but I would like to get better with it.
I checked out blender, and while the program is running perfectly, the new interface makes it feel like learning a new language.
Great video, really helped!

What's the fastest renderer software? Except for Electric Image...
megalmn2000 4 years ago

I think you should do another video and go into detail about the more popular use 3D software like Maya, 3D Max, LightWave, etc.

thanks for your reply, appreciated! but just have one simple question, what's the difference between maya and 3dsmax? i was getting to learn 3dsmax till you caught me with your talk about maya! a bit confused now! help please

Maya=Cinema
Max = Games.
Maya is the premiera app for character animation and film effect. Got to Autodesk dot com and check out their demo. it's cool :)

what about 3ds max?
elevenDi 4 years ago
Max runs 3D games. Games have become more profitable than cinema. The makers of Max bought the main cinema software Maya.

I have been using Lightwave since 96, for both games and both History and Discovery Channel documentary work. I also use 3DS Max at work, but only because I have to.

maya 8.5
3dsmax9
lightwave
softimage xsi
whatever its all pipeline, if you buy one peice of software make it zbrush, you can output meshes via obj and it integrates seamlessly with photoshop, offers you a truly revolutionary scuplting, uvw, painting solution. you could use blender as your 3dstudio app which is free, but the core production tool Is and will be for the considerable future Pixologics Zbrush 3.

Act29, you can get it really cheap if youre a student. Less than 500. But to be directly from Autodesk can be quite expensive.

This is definitely the best program for someone who wants to so some nice 3D work without using $1.
you need patience like any other good 3D programs

Yes, thanks for acknowledging the value of the comments I made here.. People are doing great 3D shorts with Blender. And its free.
AVTPro 4 years ago
Great Video, I am glad you did not edit the technical difficulties; it made it more personable.
I downloaded Blender and was searching for tutorials on how to use it when I found your youtube ™ post so now I have more confidence in this software though I still do not now how to use it.
When it auto installed and launched it searched for another program called Python and sent me to their page for that FREE software.
So it dose need additional software to run but it is still all FREE.

Thank you for sparing me any 'spirited" reponse, but I know already...I cursed :) (humor) I didn't cut it out. Still, you would be a great person to give a review of Max. Not familiar with MilkShake :) Teach us about it.
