  • I love how at 2:14 he stops, looks back, squeaks the floor, then gets an expression like a child does when they get the satisfaction of pressing the elevator button one more time after their parent yells at them for pressing it so many times. I've been listening to his singing and tap for the last 24 hours (literally) and can't get enough of it!

  • Genius does not even begin to describe what this is!! Amazing! Does anyone know how they setup the microphones to get the sounds for tapping, newspaper, etc.?

  • I tried this and as soon as I stepped on it I tore the paper in half.... HAha HE is INCREDIBLE

  • The manipulation of the sounds is so incredible and sheer brilliance. Kelly was a fine actor and a masterful dancer. Fred was a master as well but his style differs from Kelly's. Its great that they both have their share of memorable tap dance film pieces. They paved the way for Gregory and Savion who have kept the art alive and also possess their own memorable film clips of them showing off their respective styles. Tap is the best

  • That floor must have be sanded so smooth that it had a reflection in different lighting for that newspaper to never rip until Gene made it rip himself.

  • The jackie chan of tap dancing haha

  • Yes, it does feel a hell of a lot more beautiful than more contemporary beautiful stuff. This is a generalization, though. I admit.

I wonder: maybe it's because we are not accustomed to the newer works yet? Maybe our offsprings will find today's dances more beautiful than their contemporary's and as beautiful as this?

  • LUV(ed) Gene! His dancing, so effortless...especially from a guy with an 'athletic' build ~ pure talent!!! (& probably some hard work/ tons of practice mixed in :D )

  • This was the last movie Judy Garland did for MGM. Yet, it seemed fitting that Garland did this just as her star was fading and Kelly's star was rising. By the way, he was terrific in this movie.

  • i love how he starts out making the dance kind of with slow moves and then as the music builds he gets faster. it's so cool to watch!

  • i loved the ending when hs ripping up the paper with his feet ^^ and then realized there is something in the paper that he wants to read

  • Elegant masculinity!

  • gene kelly rox his tap shoes. i wanna meet him so frickin badly! and im twelve!

  • he's among the dancing legends like mj

  • wow. I am a tap dancer myself and after seeing this, i am completly awestruck. It seems as if he doesnt have to try at all. he is a true genious. absolutly amazing

  • Plato beget Aristotle as Astaire beget Kelly. Hopefully the genre will return. Gene was the complete package and will forever be the gold standard.

  • My favourite Kelly number bar none. More Astaire-like than usual for him.

  • Thank you for this...

  • nothing is creative these days. all these creative ideas have been done already and this clip is proof

  • This man was my inspiration... and the reason I have been Tapping my heart out for the past 23 yrs...

  • AMAZING...wish I could do it ...

  • Gene Kelly is brilliant. He makes his art look so easy and graceful, yet he is still so masculine. Sigh....I love him.

  • dancing today is fukin bollucs compared to this

the hoofers and song and dance men have gotta come back to save modern day entertainment!

  • genius...sheer delight. if G Kelley were to appear on "You Think you can Dance?" they'd be screaming at him for not doing hip=hop!

our culture took a wrong turn somewhere, and real talent is now replaced with political correctness and street-gutter heroism.

  • Very very good, but as you might have geussed it obviously wasn't very good news for the newspaper!

    Nah, I prefer Fred Astaire.

  • Yeah, Fred is ok, but Gene is way far more handsome and athletic... Look at his legs in the pirate. Aaaahhhhh :)

Anyway, it's two different styles, I used to prefer Fred before I watched all Gene's movies. Ok, let's say they're both great (I continuously have the same fight with my tap teacher ;))

  • I know what you mean. Gene was certainly the more balletic type, don't you agree?

  • @misspeggy0704

    I'm with you!

  • @misspeggy0704 Apples and oranges. I love both equally for their different strengths and styles.

  • @fredastairevault Who's that?

  • What is astounding is that this was done in one single take. You can see there are no cuts. Don't know how this genius did it!

  • There are 5 cuts in the whole sequence, it's unfortunately not a single take...

But he is indeed a genius :)

  • It's true- but can you imagine how many cuts there'd be in a modern-day reproduction of this? The man's an absolute genius...

  • nicccccccccce

    he is HOT!!!

  • Thanks for sharing :)

  • Gene Kelly is fabulous!

  • Sorry I didn't mean to hit the down thump. I was going to give it a thump up. I Agree with you.

  • What movie is this from??

  • As indicated, it's from 'Summer Stock' with Judy Garland.

  • Gene is amazing!!!!

  • no one will EVER be like him, he's amazing! timeless!

  • I Love him!!!!!!Gene Kelly is one-of-a-kind,

  • Wow! Way to get creative with newspaper and a creak in the floor!

  • he is so talented ..i love him

  • he suffered a hernia I understand when trying the newspaper tear scene.. incredible

  • needless to say...gene kelly is the man.

  • gENIAL
