I read a book that gave 70 or so documented cases of people overhearing tongues and understanding them and similar accounts. That happened in Acts 2. However, in I Corinthians 14, when Paul talks about tongues being used in church, he writes 'no man understandeth them.' The idea that tongues are languages that must be understood by the audience doesn't enter into to Paul's writing. Paul argues that tongues are to be interpretted.

The answer to your question is in the Bible. Why speak in tongues in church? The answer is if there is an interpretation, so the church can receive edifying. Paul wrote that if a man speaks in tongues 'no man understandeth him.' He spent many verses explaining that tongues should be intepretted if spoken in church so that the church receive edifying. He doesnt say that tongues are not beneficial if everyone speaks the same language, as you imply. The Bible says nothing about 'false tongues'.

i believe speaking in languages is not the same as tongues. we know when we hear someone in their native language. tongues is jibberish. you & i know that but you will let your mythical history book tell you otherwise. think for yourself.

I have a degree in Linguistics, I'm well travelled, and have studied 8 or 9 languages or so. I've heard speaking in tongues overseas, and could not tell if it was someone naturally speaking in another language or speaking in tongues.

I ran a tape of speaking in tongues by a former Arabic professor of mine. He thought it might be Turkish or Kurdish. There was a book written in 71 about documented cases of speaking in tongues in known languages.

Your definition of chuch is off, she is the church, Christians are the church, God does not reside in temples made by men. He lives in those who believe in him. So she may not be as involved in activities in a building, but she is being the church in her daily life.

I don't know how anyone can just tape their self speaking in tongues... Its an experience between you and God, Not something planned or practiced... I think a lot of people are unaware of the seriousness of it. And maybe its being "misused". It doesn't have to be interpreted every time. It is sometime a communication between you and God.

Jason You need taught on tongues. Speaking in tongues is for the building up for yourself in private, not meant for interpretation. Give a tongue in church publicly is meant to be a message for the body and must be interpreted.

If you feel you have the gift of tongues, I suggest you test the authenticity of your experience. Tape record yourself while speaking in that tongue and then find three or four people (who don't know each other) who claim to have the gift of interpretation and let them listen to it. If their separate interpretations are identical and don't conflict with Scripture, perhaps you do have this gift.

Ok, well, why don't you take excerpts from a church service where someone is recorded speaking in tongues? Many churches make recordings of their services nowadays. But if tongues are truley a gift which the bible teaches they are, then like the gift of a pastor or teacher, it should be able to be used any time. Your thoughts?

Well, I just hate to see people talk about tongues like its a something you do in fun.. Its not like that at all and i have been in congregations. that are introducing tongues to the members like it is something that can be taught and they take turn going around in a circle. Its a scary thing to misuse the tongues.. Yes it is a gift. but it can also be part of a prayer language between you and God.

I don't believe in the modern tongues thing because I don't believe it fits what is described in the Bible.But I admit there's just enough there to "make" a case for it.I still think they're reading things into the Scripture that arent there, but I can see how easy it would be. But like you, churches holding classes on speaking in tongues is not even remotely Biblical.

As to your other comment, does the Bible ever say to seek the Holy Ghost? I can't remember - its late.

I was saying, take the recordings of someone speaking in tongues, find two or three people who claim to have the gift of interpretation and have them listen to the tape individually. If they all come up with the same interpretation, then maybe its legit.

Like many, you do not understand the meaning of separation of church and state and why it was part of the constitution. She is not forcing her view on anyone and if so, how has she "forced" her views? Just because she speaks doesn't mean she has "forced". Suppose a woman gives birth to a baby in a mountain cabin, but decides she doesn't want to feed the baby and lets her sit in her own excrement and starve to death. Would she be charged with a crime if this were found out? Yes, even though she did not use HER OWN BODY to care for that baby, feed her, change her diaper, etc. Abortion procedures are not passive like this. They are acts of aggression, forcibly cutting up the baby or injecting saline.

Quoting your holy book is meaningless. If you can't argue you point with a rational conversation that proves that what you are saying makes sense, then yes, it's non-sense. The problem for you, of course, is that you can not argue you point using reason, logic and rationality and you know that. Take away a book written by ancient goat herders and you have nothing.
