I live in Liverpool and remember when this was in the local paper, one of my co-workers used to work for Littlewoods and knew this boy's mother. Everyone was utterly shocked at this little bastard and what he did, killed his parents and then left their dead bodies in the house.
I find it interesting how little Brian Blackwell's educational, familial and social background is delved into or explored prior to 2004- especially his pre-teen childhood, relationships with his extended family and examples of him "given to telling lies". While I have absolutely no sympathy for him and find his actions abhorrent, I suspect what caused him to commit this heinous crime must have been developing for some time. NPD doesn't just develop in less than a year.
@Hypestrike1 everybody who ends up doing something like that, and not only (crime, abuse, robbery, child pornography, etc) MUST have something in their background that triggers it. But the thing is, we all have issues. Nobody's had a perfect life. However, in some cases, parents are to blame for not having properly disciplined their children, in others, the system, for not recognizing these issues and treating the perpetrators like criminals. In others, it's just pure...happening. They snap.
@iknark I understand what you're saying, but my point is that potential underlying abnormalities in his personality were hinted at in the documentary, but never explored or elaborated on- only mentioned in passing, if at all. If you had only just learned about this case, you would get the impression that his NPD developed in the space of less than a year. Very unlikely. Why were interviews mainly with police, lawyers, and journalists? Maybe family or former classmates could have given insight?

Most people with narcissism wouldn't actually kill someone anyway, basically narcissism alone would just be an incredibly large ego. It would take a real sociopath to actually kill their parents. It seems like a lot of sociopaths may also be narcissistic.

My point is family/friends-close or otherwise- are noticeably absent among those interviewed in this documentary, and they could have provided some crucial background information on Brian's life and the dynamic within this nuclear family: which, from what I've read, was very unusual.

While I have absolutely no sympathy for him and find his actions abhorrent, I suspect what caused him to commit this heinous crime must have been developing for some time. NPD doesn't just develop in less than a year.

@Hypestrike1 everybody who ends up doing something like that, and not only (crime, abuse, robbery, child pornography, etc) MUST have something in their background that triggers it. But the thing is, we all have issues. Nobody's had a perfect life. However, in some cases, parents are to blame for not having properly disciplined their children, in others, the system, for not recognizing these issues and treating the perpetrators like criminals. In others, it's just pure...happening. They snap.

@iknark I understand what you're saying, but my point is that potential underlying abnormalities in his personality were hinted at in the documentary, but never explored or elaborated on- only mentioned in passing, if at all. If you had only just learned about this case, you would get the impression that his NPD developed in the space of less than a year. Very unlikely. Why were interviews mainly with police, lawyers, and journalists? Maybe family or former classmates could have given insight?

My point is that 99% is people who don't raise their children properly, and in 1% of the cases, it's just human nature i assume. that's why we can't understand when perfectly normal and accomplished people do such things, and our mind just accepts the fact that they're monsters. Anything else is beyond our conception.

@Hypestrike1 well, he was found to have a narcissistic personality disorder, so he probably always had issues; however, people around him might think he was just "being a teenager". most young people are narcissistic so i doubt he would stand out particularly & plenty of teens & young adults tell "little white lies", sometimes frequently, without it being a sign of mental illness. people with NPD also tend to be charming in the shortrun & that may have distracted family members from his lies.

Most people with narcissism wouldn't actually kill someone anyway, basically narcissism alone would just be an incredibly large ego. It would take a real sociopath to actually kill their parents. It seems like a lot of sociopaths may also be narcissistic.

@ytubeeaccount6496 Maybe they are, but I've always believed in Brian Blackwell's case that there were probably signs/triggers for his NPD (or "sociopathic" nature if you like) much earlier in his childhood. My point is family/friends-close or otherwise- are noticeably absent among those interviewed in this documentary, and they could have provided some crucial background information on Brian's life and the dynamic within this nuclear family: which, from what I've read, was very unusual.

Wow - this story and his behavior really parallel the casey anthony case. Too bad the prosecution and media didn't see this before the trial. No excuses, just a better way to identify her actions with others that have behaved in similar ways. Might even have helped prosecution.
