This measure is for multi-million dollar estates worth over $3.5 million. It is directed to noncitizens of Hawaii. The huge majority of Hawaii residents are not affected by this bill. The GOP sure does know how to twist the facts on this bill.
In listening to the testimony, this bill only applies to 2010, when there is no estate tax on the federal level. most prudent families would do estate planning anyway and there is no reason to give folks a tax vacation in 2010 simply due to federal politics or oversight. everyone pays estate taxes, let everyone pay their fair share. no tax vacation in 2010. the exemption is high anyway. 3.5 million? anyone with more than that and no estate planning, they can pay.
i agree with your view on this bill, but disagree with a premise to your argument. you said that you feel that the state should continue to find a way to increase revenues. this is incorrect. the state should seek to decrease spending, thus lessening the burden on the taxpaying resident. glad that you are against the death tax, but you could go further.
