  • Interesting to see the traffic on the left. So no it isn't a British invention to be different! And no, the film isn't the wrong way round either.

  • Actually, Vienna wasn't too badly knocked around by WW2, being out of range for the RAF until very near the end. Compared with Warsaw and Berlin it got off very lightly.

I don't quite see the connection between Hitler and Vienna: he only lived there for about five years and always hated the place. I believe he had vague plans to demolish most of it and rebuild it as a "true Germanic"city once the war was over.

...Fortunately he never had the chance.

  • It's not as beautiful now as it was then.

Wonderful movie, I totally like it.

  • @WithoutAnyHope

Well in 1936 you saw beggars in the streets which you don't see now.

  • @shlomofeuerwerk You see them in some places, EVERYWHERE; believe me. I know it, I live close to Vienna. ^^

  • I was recently in Vienna and was amazed to see that it still looks the same as the film, even though it was destroyed during the war. They must have worked hard to build the city back to it's former glory. I absolutely loved the beautiful city and would like to return some day.

  • I met an american woman wo REALLY asked me, if there is "still war" in austria. how silly is that ?

just wanted to mention this because I can't stand it, if people only write about Hitler and Nazis when Austria or Vienna is mentioned.

Would be the same if Autrians only write about Cowboys and death by shooting if USA is mentioned. In my opinion both silly - sorry ;-)...

  • @7forheaven

You are going to compare "cowboys and Indians" with the Nazis? Yes the first thing I thought when seeing this was how "ironic" that 2 years later the Austrian Nazis would take over and destroy the beautiful Vienna we see in this documentary. The Viennese were "cruel". Worse than Germany.

  • @shlomofeuerwerk I don't "compare" cowboys and indians" with the nazis. I just dared to mention how ugly it is and how disguisting, if everything, which is written about austrians is: nazis, nazis, nazis... like every silly person who would only have clichés in mind of/about any state ;-). I hope, you got my point, now. and don't turn it into the exact opposite, as before (thanks for NOT doing so ;-)).

so THIS was my point. besides: I haven't been even alive in WW2. for me, this is history.

  • @shlomofeuerwerk I agree, the viennese are just morbid and cynical swine.

  • @shlomofeuerwerk You are old enough to remember Austria in the 1930's? Did you live there ?

  • Der Grossen...was Hitler a Homosexual?

I believe he haunted many hostels for homeless men...who were gay...

I believe there is a lot of evidence to prove of Hitler's homosexuality...

  • if Hitler would have been homosexual it would make no sense that he killed them. and there was Eva Braun. I'm really no fan of Hitler or Nazis and I know that he hated them so much he killed those people.

But one thing is sure: Hitler was crazy, totally crazy. Too bad, some people listened to him. Important to mention too, that there was resistance.

  • All trashed by the Anti Christ Adolf Hitler...let his spirit burn forever in hell surrounded by a 1000 rattle snakes.

  • Great Video!

What's the last waltz called (beginning in the ice skating sequence) ??

  • Great historical perspective, pre-WW2.

  • I wonder if Austria...had a Fascist mayor in the 1930's...

  • @dudemantwo Vienna was always know as "Red Vienna" in other words it was socialist unlike the rest of Austria. The Nazi party led by Hitler started to gain political ground I would would guess around 1935. In 1938 .. look up "Anschlus" the politicians Dolphus..I think..sold out to Hitler. In this video you see the city as it was . Hitler hated Vienna because he was not good enough to get in the school of architecture...a lot of the University was run by Jewish folks

  • @dergrossen Yeah I forgot..the workers had a big bust up in the early 30s..the army shelled the Karl Marx Hof..where the "communists" lived. Common sense intervened and they came to an agreement..a social democratic solution that was fair...

  • @dudemantwo No.

  • Congratulations!

    Marc

  • Great video. It was interesting to see that the flavor and friendliness which exists today, could be seen in the 30's. I found the Austrians to be hospitable and gentle. Vienna is maybe my favorite big city.

  • Thx for posting this! I have lived in this city for close to 10 years. Can almost see the shadow of the nazi years that startet only 2 years later.
