Yep. You're actually supposed to get the grapple beam before you get the wave beam. This is one of those "intended" sequence breaks, which are breaks the programmers kind of intended to be possible.
Go through the same corridor that led to the ice beam (first door on the left after going into Norfair from Brinstar via the elevator) and speed boost your way through it. You'll destroy a couple of blocks near the end of your run and see some power bomb blocks you can destroy. Head down that way and you'll come to eventually face the grappling beam mini-boss. If you need to, watch some of my other videos on how to beat that boss and get the strangely-far-away award that is the grappling beam.
You can also wall jump to the door above from the start position in this video. It can be tough sometimes as you have to place the jump perfectly. The results given are nice though, early reserve tank and a missile pack, maybe two?
Yeah, there's a missile pack in that room just sitting there.
For everyone that doesn't know that room's secret, just shoot at the left wall near the top after getting the first missile pack and again at the bottom left. A pole rises up, so get on it, morph, and roll through. Go through that next room, grab the reserve tank, shoot the platform closes to said tank, grab THAT pack of missiles, then get out of there.
It's funny, even though I'm very agile with this game and can exploit it to death... I only just got my first best ending @ 1:50 about an hour ago. I'm laid back, so I guess I enjoy the game by taking it slow :D.
Forgot to mention, this was the first item I got using the one wall jump exploit during my first play-through. I just had to get up there :D and boy was I happy when I did. WAVE BEAM OMG!!!! That was definitely the big moment for me, I always loved the Wave Beam :). Come to think of it, I didn't even know about the Spazer.
Very good. You're better than I am. I usually go the long way to get to the wave beam and then wall jump, but I like your way much better and will try it.
At 0.05, I just freeze the waver and get up there
