  • A nice wool blanket like the one in the video - is that military or from a retailer like REI? Who makes the best wool blankets?

  • @MrEhud77 - I watched that video about the pack on Canterbury's site and I agree with a lot of what he says including the single shot shotgun being versatile. That video is more about survival and stealth. This video is a bit of history and the pack is more about travel and convenience. I probably will use the methods here for a quick pack or to strap on my old motorcycle. The waterproof pack here is critical for me. I want to thank Gawletap for doing to research to find this.

  • Great vid! I love this idea. Can't wait to try this out!

  • Nice video.

If you used a marling hitch, you could tie up the pack with one length of rope w/o having to cut it into pieces.

  • Cracking vid many thanks cocker

  • This is a handy skill to have. Glad you posted this Hudson Bay pack howto.

  • @broadwayFan28 Dave canterbury show'san alternate menthod that I use.

  • I like it very much, found it first in my SAS survival guide book, tried it, the wrapping around was kinda hard for me, but you helped me with it a lot. Thank you @gawletap you showed me the right way to do it. I'll think of you on my way from Prague to Italy next year.

  • awsome vid!

  • I am an advocate of simplicity when I am far from civilization. I have gotten many excellent ideas from YouTube videos, and this is a great one. I am learning that there is so much to be found in the woods for all kinds of needs. Thank you for this idea.

  • Im sure im not the only one who appreciates you uploading these videos. Thank You

  • Thanks for making I enjoyed your video, love the dog, got 3 gsd myself, keep making these. thanks dave

  • Thanks for this - ive adapted this system for my overnight motorbike trips with just a basic cook set, water and a bivvy bag in the roll. Can set camp in about 3 minutes and pack up in less. Thanks again.

  • Awesome, thumbs up.

  • why in the hell are people commenting bad on this video, this shit is cool, you have all your gear in your sleeping set up, thats friggin awesome, no need for a heavy back pack any more, all though i did see this first on wilderness outfitters, still its a different version to learn about, thanks for the video brother

  • sweet!

  • cool

  • You're extremely sexy. I would love to go camping with you. =) I love the part from 1:07 - 1:20. You look great!

  • Very good video' where about in the U K is that?

  • this is actually very useful if you need to travel light and keep stuff dry, if you people gave bad comments that means you watched the full video, which you weren't forced to do

  • Awesome lab i got a blond version. So awesome to take camping. Great companion.

  • I've seen homeless folk wrap their gear in the same way .

  • this was called a hoppis before it was called a hudsons bay pack.

  • Your vids are very good i liked the one when you cooked on a tin can very survivalic

  • I like tin stuff like you know packages thingy thats made of tin :D

  • I've just recently picked up on your videos, and just want to compliment you on your vids. very informative, keep up the good work

  • Seen different kinds of rolled packs before but never seen one like this before. I like it think I'll have to try it.

  • so when it starts to rain and you put the poncho on you no longer have a pack , right

  • great channle .dont buy any migg spray or jungle spray it dont work save your money, wen we went to scotland ,an old boy told me to use a spray by avon ,its called " skin so soft " ,its a clear oil ,spray it on but dont rub it in ,it works very well and kills the migges, and make you smell nice lol ,and all the locals had there windows open and there was thousands of migges ,the migges dont come into there home because thay had druaniam plants in the windows ,migges wont go near them

  • @cressy7isback i was going to get the leaves from the plant and crush them and put it with water then spray it on to see if it will work like a migge repellent

  • It is so simple I am amazed. I have tied tarps down using the stone method. What time period would if be used in? Would this be used in the Iron age?

  • "AIDS his human generated" ahahahahahahahahaaaaa Bullshit.

It may have been studied for possible mutation and weaponising (i dont know) but it will have started in the wild. We're just not that clever.

Intersting vid btw, just keep getting replies to the other topics on this page.

You live, you die. If there was an afterlife, where would there be room for new life. You become the earth and it recycles you, that's a beautful thing.

  • Nice video and thanks. Seems like a handy way to travel light.

  • Does anyone KNOW which brand poncho this is for sure? I think I know which one it is but I want to be sure-Thanks

  • What makes you guys think evolution and God can coexist? You are using too small of a thought process. Science still has yet to prove the most basic of things. Science is the sum of observations of the natural world combined with thought. We know that two objects are gravitationally attracted; we can measure it; but we don't know why. We just believe. What propels an electron? How does it know where to be? Science is a thoughtful work based on some serious faith.

  • Andy. How do you end up talking God on a video about a fucking Hudson Bay Pack?! Take your OPINION elsewhere, you know, like, relevant. If, by some quirk of logic, such a place exists. God will love you better for it.

  • Good video ,was it filmed on Cannock chase you sound from that sort of way

  • watch dad fights his son funny!!!

  • Nice one mate. I wish I had thought of that on my course. Instead they had us making bloody bergans out of hessian and para silk - took ages!.

  • good video, nice and simple, easy to follow and pick up the idea, nice dog too i love having my collie with me when im out and about, really cheer you up when its cold and wet

  • he told me he was making a toothbrush but guess what he lied

  • wow i never realised any1 could be that much of a cunt!!

  • so logically packed! wow! i might just try one myself. bet you can travel miles. you have really excelled yourself in this video. you are a very much a credit to your nation.

  • I think you'll find God didn't write that, since God doesnt write. People do, in this case Paul did. Im writing now, but youre hardly going to quote what I say as what God wrote.

Your assumption that God wrote that through paul is based on faith, not fact. Since your faith is only good to you as mine is only good to me. quoting the bible doesnt further Gods work. It merely is the work of the ego through fear of god.

  • Well do you believe in evolution?

Because you are only taking scientists theories that they have no evidence for.

And I see God working every day.

Do you see evolution every day?

  • Well do you believe I can fly?

Cos I only have R Kelly's word for it but more people believe in him than you.

And I see him at work everyday on Mtv

  • @andyboreland You are such an idiot, there are tremendous amounts of evidence for all scientific theories. There is absolutely no evidence for "God" or Christianity, you seem to be confusing the two. Also you don't see god working every day, you think you do, but in reality you don't. I see evolution working everyday in all animals that have evolved with the best genes for functioning in their habitat. Evolution is proven. Dumbass.

  • @JaspCla HAA u just told him

  • No it isn't it is still considered a theory.

Animals that function well in their habitat could just as easily be evidence for God. You just choose to go with the flow.

Maybe you just don't want to believe

  • You are an idiot... Sorry but you are. I know your mind is made up about this matter but the amount of evidence stacked up against theism is huge. Evolution can be clearly observed, you follow god through blind faith. There is many a thing to prove scientific theories but you refuse to accept them because you are scared of dying.

    Fool

  • god working every day??

    bollocks!

    why do people die?

    why all the natural disasters?

    why are there terminal illnesses?

all can be explained through science, but from a god point of view dosent make any sence

  • 1. God made death as a punishment for Adam and Eve.

    2. NATURAL disasters, its in the name.

    3. Ilnesses again are a natural part of life. No one is invincible, otherwise there'd be serious over-population.

  • @andyboreland what you see god create terrorism, and create natural disasters? and create famin, think it through you daft twat :)

  • This life is only a door to where you will spend eternity.

In eternity there will be no pain or suffering for people who go to heaven.

But for people who reject God life on earth will be nothing compared to hell.

  • Starting to sound like a suicide bomber.

If there is a God and he permits all this suffering without intervention then that God would be evil.

  • No, God is a judge. He brought pain and suffering into the world, as the first price to pay for sin.

  • @andyboreland dude take the God talk to a different venue. There are plenty of them for that. This is a place people want to talk about bushcraft and survival techniques. Have a little respect, will ya.

  • @dragondoubt The only reason I posted this is out of concern, but if you feel you don't need Jesus...

  • @andyboreland Yeah, I didn't say that, but this is not the venue to be starting this discussion. Don't you think that people who stay away from religious sites do it for a reason. Namely, it is full of arguing dopes who are wrongly abusing the word of God in the name of concern.

  • @dragondoubt Ok understood but EVERYONE needs to hear.

  • @andyboreland No, YOU need everyone to hear, there's a difference. This is an excellent video! Thank You Gawletap!

  • @brawin01 It makes no difference to me. I am doing this out of concern, there is no personal gain.

  • I heard he doesnt work every day. I heard on sunday he just kicks back and watches football.

I see God's work, since he created evertything. and is everything. lets face it, as soon as you give it a limitation , it cant be God right, coz God is the All.

So He created aids, and flowers, he created manchester, and gays, and love, and hinduism, and everything. In the bible it doesn't mention Evolution, you're right, and Dinosaurs? thats just a test yeah? and the chinese too i imagine.

  • also if god was omiscient, why would he create the flood to wipe out sin when a few years later it would just come back. Doesnt sound like the actions of an intelligent god, sounds like the justification of bad events in the small minds of primitive men.

  • No, God is not everything. Yes He created life, but man created a lot, (AIDS).

Yes God created Dinosaurs, they're even in the BIble. The oldest book in the BIble, Job.

  • MAN created aids?? AIDS is a sundrome caused by a fckin virus in Monkeys. People caught it through butchering them for food and it was spread further by sex and dirty needles in developing nations or by drug users in the west.

Your hobby seems to be posting benine comments about God on youtube. Aside from stirring up debate you have solidified my views as an atheist. Thank you.

For many years religious groups got publicity by saying God invented it to punish Gay people.

  • Well men got it from monkeys then, fair enough.

There are no athiests in hell.

  • Yea AIDS is a human engineered virus. Read info from someone other than a pharmaceutical. "god" didn't create shit cause "god" doesn't exist nor does one shred of physical evidence that supports that theory.

  • @jayluketa go take your phamaceuticals elsewhere.

  • @dragondoubt hey I'm against them don't get me wrong, I was just commenting on the aids and religious crap.

  • shagg

  • LOL

  • Please don't push your belief system on me, if I need one I shall search for it. I don't need it foisted upon me.

  • Procrastination is the thief of time.

In other words, you will put it off until there is no time left.

  • You are as bad as a cold calling telephone salesman. I think you are actually putting me off of God. Before I was beginning to believe, but your existance as a door to door God salesman pretty much proves to me he doesn't exist. Thanks for taking my one chance at having faith, you bastard.

  • I'm not trying to sell my faith to you, as I personally would get nothing out of it.

I am trying to tell people that they are going to hell and need to repent.

  • Do I get a money back guarantee? Buy one salvation get one free? Mate, you are prostituting your own faith. Don't sell me a salvation, I'll get one of my own.

  • There is only one way to get to heaven, Jesus Christ.

  • @andyboreland

Yes, Jesus is Lord, but what in God's name does it have to do with this video?

  • @hpd707 Oh nothing, I was just posting on random videos that I happened to watch. :)

  • @andyboreland yeah.. ummm.. god landed from the hudson bay pack on this video no? troll

  • "Punctuality is the thief of time" - Oscar Wilde

Try not to misquote genius. Oh and he was gay, thought that might upset you ;-)

  • I wasn't quoting Oscar Wilde, and yes I know.

He was sent to jail for it, and I have nothing against homos.

God has nothing against homos. God is only against homosexuality.

  • Be a good lad and go and play else where

  • @Mongoose1358 shut up this is a great video, if i gave u a poncho and a blanket and kicked you out into the wilderness with nothing but basic survival kit you would be glad you watched this video.

  • @mcwarhammer1 wow that's so likely

  • Yeah where's the toothbrush now I'm gonna die of tooth decay what good's a fucking pack then

  • Either he's only out for one or two nights in which case you don't really need a toothbrush or you can improvise, as he said he would teach us.

  • Are you from the Midlands? If not you sound very brummy =] We're from Brum too.

  • sounds like he's from the black country

  • so what do you carry your stuff in if its raining? considering you used your poncho to put everything in lmao.....

  • he wrapped it in waterproofs.........moron

  • I think what Nubashift means is if it's raining, you're going to want to be wearing your poncho so what do you carry your kit in.

  • What I am curious about is why do dick heads like you lot need to comment when you know fuck all about nothing, I have forget more than you will ever know.

  • @gawletap oh grow up

  • @gawletap Don't get mad at people on the internet. Why hate anonymous asshole? BTW awesome videos, I subscribed to your channel.

  • @gawletap i dont think so. somehow!

  • ha ha ha

  • it was used by the hudchen bay trapers hence the name!

  • i ent got a clue why it was recommended to me lol but i agree i wanted to see how he makes a tooth brush lol lierr :@ and hes an idiot sounds like a gorm lol

  • he sed he was goin to show us how to make a toothbrush but he didn lier 1:01

  • haha, it was recommended for me too!? Thanks youtube!

  • and this was on my "reccomended for you" section, why?

  • my thoughts exactly. lol

  • i would have used a kwik save bag

  • i could sell you 40 gallon of fly killer

  • I would call that a "bindle" rather than a Hudsons Bay Pack, but to each their own.

Also I'd use a clove hitch rather than a square knot as it holds better on the rocks and continually tightens itself as you are walking.

  • Poor dog mosquitoes suck

  • Bravo! Very neat!

One thing, though: this pack does not seem very well-suited to enable you to use any of the gear packed inside it on the fly; more of a "get-it-from-here-to-there-on-the-march" pack, yes?

Still, I like the simplicity of it a lot!

  • Comment removed

  • toooothbrush?

    i wanted to see that

  • And me. Did u find the Toothbrush post?

  • Good pack easy to make aswell 5* mate

  • Another nice presentation. This fellow may be the best presenter on youtube.

  • mmmMMMmmmmM giant sausage......aaaggggggaaghhhhhhhhh

  • How to make a Hudson Bay Pack

    Dgetting to know your neighbors

How to make a Hudson Bay Pack

    Basic Math-

    C

  • ???

  • cant say its a great idea to use your poncho on the outside(it could get ripped and there goes your shelter and/or rain cover) it would seem better to use the wool blanket on the outside(its rugged and if it gets ripped it will still work not to mention that it will still retain heat even while wet.

  • Yours seems to be an excellent point, except to say that if your wool blanket gets wet it's going to be a miserable night for you, and not just because you'll be under a wet blanket, but because you'll have to carry extra weight for a while before you even bed down!

  • Soldiers in the Civil War used a very similar technique. The difference was they left the roll long, and tied the ends together to make a loop, which was then carried over the shoulder.

  • @ConfederateHandjob Hey, that sounds good. I was going to go with what he did in the video, as I have been looking for a way to make a pack out of a wool blanket. The long loop blanket roll does sound more comfortabe though.

  • @dragondoubt Yes it must have been very efficient. They rolled extra clothes in a wool blanket, and then wrapped that in a poncho or oilcloth blanket if they had one. The main advantage was it was easy to carry on long marches, and easy to get off if a firefight started. The only downside I've ever heard was that it could make you hotter on hot days.

  • 5/5 good vid

  • thats great. im gonna have to try that this summer.

    thanks

  • i can highly reccommend this way of travelling, ive started to use this alot,i find it doesnt get in the way when tracking or observing nature, you have so much more movement in your back...5*****..grimbo.

  • this is very relaxing

i do like the rucksack too

you should make a video of your personal carry.

  • Simple. Makes me wonder why i spent so much time and money on my backpack.

.....actually, when you have 20kg on your back for any amount of time you are glad for all the thought that North Face put into the making, but this works well short term.

  • What about the tooth brush?

Nice Hudson Bay Pack. Thanks for the great video.

  • Hi thanks. The film was taken from one of our one hour long dvds so the toothbrush was shown later in the film, sorry.

  • Gotcha' So are you selling the entire film or is it available for download somewhere?

  • Nice one our kid!

  • the good thing with wool is that it stays warm even whn its wet so any other blanket wont do for this pack, another good method for this is rather than use stone ,use sticks which can double as steaks to make a poncho shelter, its a bit lighter than stones

  • i think sticks would tear the poncho rocks are less likely to do that

  • i dont mean push the sticks through the fabric?? there is another way that is lighter, you tie the sticks in very much the same as the rocks.think about it ,you'll get it eventually if you try .you need to practice then you see what i mean,it wont damage the fabric.

  • I always enjoy your videos Peter. Keep up the good work . Best wishes to the wife and Ollie.

  • can u show us how to make a tooth brush

  • also can be used as a life belt for river crossings

  • i did that because i whent on a trip with the work and i got lost

  • It's a great way to travel light, I'll agree, my only issue with it is the accessability of the kit once it's been put together - you have to take the whole thing apart.

For a short expedition this would be perfect though.

  • Brilliant.

  • this is what i use when i go out, not the same way i set it up but the basic idea, works great, no need for a fancy back pack or anything

  • this is a wonderful minimalist idea, thanks

  • Greta info!

  • Hey! I'm first to respond! Thanks for a great video. This is like a horseshoe pack.
