  • I found that the BBC's seven episode production was not so slick as this but is somehow much more natural and authentic to the novel. Juliet Aubrey is however quite devine and as brilliant as ever.

  • This complex subject matter is most often misrepresented.

Read a very informative chapter seven (The sale of wives) in Customs in Common (Merlin Press Ltd., 1991) written by E.P. Thompson to get a better understanding of what was really going on.

  • apparently, in the real life town of Casterbridge, there was an actual sale of a wife by the husband..shocking.

  • @stupidintellect90 Indeed. And it was not only in Dorchester, but in times where the church ruled more than today and divorce was practically impossible it happened not so rarely, I read about quite a lot of those "auctions" in England, for example.

Got the DVD just before christmas, very good actors, and a very very good book.

  • @Klemperer yeah, how good was the book! Hardy is excellent at the real tear jerker stories.

  • I wonder why it is that English women never seem to have carried their babies in cloth slings like other cultures, it is much kinder to you arms and leaves your hands free.
