I just want to make sure people realize...Kerry did not invented that growl/riff. Many Elphabas growled before and Courtney Cory was the first one to do the riff and growl combined. Although, I do think Kerry does it better. My favorite is Kristy Cates.

Teal Hicks! San Francisco wasn't included, but now I know our Elphaba beats them all. (makes sense since Wicked began here.) I have a background in vocal music & theory, so it's an informed opinion.

I was disappointed when I heard Idina on the cast recording. That snippet was my favorite of the entire score. I see now how much the renditions vary between performers (obviously, but it's considerably more than expected).

If you get the chance to see the SF production, DO IT!

Uhh...except for Ana, Caissie, Dee, Eden, Idina, Julia, Julie, & Lisa...uh..yeah...Most of the ones that growl were in london...I just think what you think is growl is a roughness to the voice. It's a demanding line and some people *coughkerry* interpret that as a growl because a growl is demanding & strong. I AGREE. Some people copied..some came up with it on their own as complete coincidence..a lot of them do it because it fits..but it's not a requirement, and it's not a broadway thing..
