Actually the "stars and bars" reference is a mistake. The Confederate flag most people think of ISN'T the stars and bars. The Stars and Bars had seven white stars on a blue field with three wide stripes (bars) of red-white-red. It was found to be too similar to the Stars and Stripes and was taken out of use. The well known Confederate flag is the battle flag of the CSA.
