great vid. sorry on your other page i thought you said the cotton was soaked in alcohol. but... Vaseline...really. i just learned something, thanks im going to try that. but i still thing alcohol soaked cotton balls or 3in squares of gauze would work also, plus it would serve a 2nd purpose... first aid.... im going to try some of these different ideas. thanks for the vids, you have a good set up and good ideas.
Strike force fire steel!!! I have one of those!! They work very well too!
I have lit many fires with mine. I try not to use the little tinders that come in the handle though. The sparks coming off of the steel will ignite light fluffy stuff, so i save the tinder for emergencies.
My name's Bear Grills and if your not an ex-green barrette you'll never make it out alive! And today I'm going to eat something disgusting in order to get some extra vitamins. LOL you rock PackRat556!
your vids rock. awesome work and alot of fun trying and experimenting with all survival skills. my vids 108-130 is the locations where i will be doing my survival and camping and firearms training in future vids i will do.
Im in the boy scouts in northern ca. and we have red woods and they have needles, it rains 80in a yr, but dry stuff is everywere.under the layers of dead trees. i didnt relize that dry kindling was so hard to find, but u made a good fire.
Man thats an awsome idea shaving the wood like that! Oh yeah and you probly already do this but if not you should soak your cotton balls in vasoline its the best!
Hey idk if you know but you can make an improvised candle which u can use to boil water as well... with aluminum foil and ur cotton balls soaked with vasoline.. you fold a piece of aluminum foil in half..put the cotton balls in the middle , fold it on itself again and make a little package type thing, then you take a little of the cotton ball out of it and use it as a wick. it stays lit for a very long time, long enough to boil water plus you can use it as an emergency candle. Take care! =]
Nice video! Is fat wood from the heartwood of pinetrees/branches? All Pines? I've seen people with it and I have seen it in stores, but how/where do you get it?
I also have a strike force, and found it to be the best of anything I've tried so far, including the majic stryker and a swiss fire steel which resembles the light my fire.Nice channel man!
Good job. learned something new today. I have a pack of 20 cotton balls that are smeared in Vaseline which I keep in a ziplock in my 72 hour bag. When you throw one spark to these...WATCH OUT! Pouring a glass of water on it will not even work to put them out (grease fire). They are great for starting a fire in bad conditions like wind and rain. Good job! I need to get in the vid business myself on here and maybe spread some ideas around.
I did this this past weekend in the rain. i had no problem making my fire like you cept I cheated and packed in four fueled charcoals just in case. But burning that center part of the wood did the deed. And I brought in a small tarp and a brazilian hammock to keep me off the ground for the night. worked out great. great vid and awesome music.
Thanks! Sounds like you had a great outing yourself as well. Nothing wrong with using extra starters for convenience as long as you can manage without them if necessary. I always try to keep extra tender to help me get started as well. I do use it as a backup and not as a first choice as much as possible. Thanks for watching and sharing.
That's very true. Practice must be realistic. Bad weather can be a good opportunity to develop these skills so that if it is ever for real, it will be second nature. Thanks for your interest and keep practicing!
Great Video, If you need any help getting your video/channel exposed check out this site called Tubeviews . Net it has helped 5 of my videos get ranked on the first page. Hope this helps you
Good job again...I will hopefully, maybe soon attempt to built a little fire myself. I'll make sure to record it just for fun. No used for all the tools if I don't know how to do it right or use it. Take care and keep up the good work....:)
That's true, practice makes perfect! Better to practice in less stressful times so that you know you can perform these tasks if needed in more stressful times. Good luck, I'll look forward to your video!
This can be a bit tricky actually. It kind of depends on the season and the type of tree. Winter can be hard to tell b/c lots of trees look dead when the leaves are absent. If the bark is peeling, or if you break a limb and it is dry then those are signs. also, if you tap the tree with your baton, the sound can be a sign as well. A dead tree will have little to no moisture inside and there for sounds and feels different. Also, I look for trees....continued...
...that have been damaged in storms. if the top of the tree is broken and only the trunk remains, that can help you find a good candidate as well. During Spring and Summer, the task of finding dead trees become much more obvious due to the absence of foliage. I'm sure others can make suggestions as well...anybody please feel free to share if you like...
Thanks! I do have some ideas of videos I will be working on soon. Actually, I have a couple of ideas for vids I will shoot from my camp area and a couple reviews of some gear/kits that I have. I hope to have some time to pursue this soon. Your interest is greatly appreciated!
@PackRat556 I must have missed the part where you threw lighter fluid in the fire pit before lighting it. Half of the fire pit flashed into flames the split second you struck the strikeforce! Maybe it was natural gas seeping up from below..not!
@DEAMONATOR Are you really saying you think I used lighter fluid or joking? I wasn't sure...I can assure you, the only think I used was a cotton ball to catch the sparks from the firesteel. That is why I rave about the Strikefore so much b/c it does throw such a great shower of sparks. Lighter fluid would only have defeated my purpose on this outing. I wouldn't want to cheat myself, or be dishonest with my friends or subscribers.
@DEAMONATOR Get a Bot Scout 'hot spark' stick, get a cotton ball, saturate it with vaseline, and the, take a knife, spark the ball and see what happens... then apologize to PackRat556.
Nice vid, always good to see it done in the wild an not on someones back yard.Thank you

Pine trees have very dry branches even if they are still attached to the trunk of the tree at lower levels.
Sweedish Firesteel rocks. You can actually dry out some of the surrounding wood with smoke and flame. Thanks for posting.

maybe you can pass off a message, boy scouts should make it public that they are a christian organization and will taunt a member of other religions
either that or just shut down.
