@taylorbortnerathing You lost me when you started yammering about the way it's "supposed to be". Music is generally more well received when it breaks rules and doesn't follow them, especially rock music. People don't go see music, they go to see a show, a live show, a live performance. If they wanted to hear the music, they'd stay home and listen to the CD. And do you really think if a group plans to jump up at a specific point that they cannot be "feeling" the music?
@evikjames well, i'm referring to the aspects of the performance and not the music, so your whole point of "saying how music should be" is just stupid.
i don't feel like i can make my point any clearer really, so i'm going to say this: watch live videos of these bands: at the drive-in, built to spill, neutral milk hotel, the mars volta, muse, and tool. the first four bands have great (though different) types of stage presence, while the last two have bad stage presence. hopefully you'll see why
@taylorbortnerathing You were explicitly talking about the music and NOT the performance. That's what confused me. You wrote: "i'm talking about FEELING THE MUSIC and just BEING NATURAL while you play it." If you are referring to performance, then you weren't being clear at all. In fact, I read through all of your posts and you didn't ever mention "performance". Instead of making a point, you tell me to go watch videos. It really sounds like you don't have a point...or a clue.
the problem here is that this guy is an ENTERTAINER. he's not an artist by any means
stage presence is awesome, but if you're going to choreograph your moves on stage you're a fake and people will be able to tell (unless of course you spend more time perfecting your stage performance than your music, which is being an entertainer)
just enjoy yourself and perform music that you love. as long as you're not too concerned with what others think of you, your natural stage presence should follow
@taylorbortnerathing What? "... if you're going to choreograph your moves on stage you're a fake and people will be able to tell". If you plan out where you will be and what you'll say then you are a fake? Do you really think that? Really?
Actually, if you fail to plan anything and just leave it to trial and error, it'll take you ten times as long to get anything done. You have to plan to be successful. That means planning every step of the way and adjusting the plan as necessary.
@evikjames no, that is not choreography. planning WHERE you'll be and what you're going to say is not the same thing as choreographing dance moves in an attempt to please the audience.
if you don't plan where you'll be or what you'll say, you're ill-prepared. if you plan how you're going to dance to each section of each song, you're a fake and you're an entertainer. you're not an artist, and even though your friends might think you're bad ass, you won't impress anyone intelligent.
@taylorbortnerathing So, people don't like choreography? Really? No one likes Lady Ga Ga or Madonna or the Beatles or Michael Jackson? They aren't artists because they choreograph their moves? No one intelligent likes them? Really? (I assume that you are super intelligent.)
What do you mean by "fake"? Fake things are based on other things. How is choreography fake? What is the original thing that choreography is based on? Is "running" fake walking? Is playing a guitar fake piano playing?
@evikjames jesus you're dense man. i didn't say that people don't like choreography, in fact i said that people DO like choreography. and you mentioned entirely pop artists. the beatles probably didn't choreograph their performances, and while MJ and gaga definitely do/did, those people are pop entertainers, and they're some of the better ones. but i was referring to "rock music artists", where the medium of live performance is supposed to be messy, spontaneous, honest, and full of feeling.
@taylorbortnerathing It may or may not be that I am dense, but it probably just means that you aren't really making your point clearly. You still didn't answer the question what "fake" is. Were you avoiding the question because you don't know?
When someone says something like "rock music is supposed to be....", you kind of lose me. There isn't a handbook on what rock is or isn't supposed to be. Generally, good music breaks rules not follows them, especially rock.
@evikjames another thing: i'm talking about FEELING THE MUSIC and just BEING NATURAL while you play it. if you are at band practice and you're like "alright everyone, when the chorus hits here we're all going to jump!! we're going to look so bad ass!" then that is not really feeling the music, that's just trying to appeal to the audience. but hey, whatever. it seems like you see nothing wrong with being a crowd pleaser, so just keep at it. go join a theatre production or a pop group or something
This guy is way to fixated on the money. And he said the performance is more important than the song... WTF is this shit? I'll never understand popfags.
Wow I appreciate the tips but the idea that spending more time on the material is ineffective sounds like bad advice. Stage presence is certainly important, but being a great musician is more important. Maybe unless you're going to be a pop star :)
Yeah, when you don't care to make it your living. Living off of music is different than only caring about money. Unless the musician likes living in his parents basement, or only playing for fun.
Yea! this is so true and a lot of people over look this

This is so true always when I discover a new band or song I always look a live video of them/it and see what it sounds like
