Oddly my dog seemed to be quite drawn to the coils, and she's usually pretty darn prudent about possible dangers.

She got very excited and wanted to run right over to them, but finally contented herself with just wagging madly, which is why some of my video is a little jumpy.

If you are referring to when it looks like it is turning back on itself, I I first thought it was an optical illusion from the angle I was at, but now it does look like it is striking itself.

Both coils had several rods around their perimeter, but they were striking out in different directions as well.

is the smaller one on the right striking its own primary coil? or is it hopefully striking some safety feature?

Yes, it looks like it;

But Its probably hitting the strike rail, not the actual primary...

I wasn't the one running the show. I was one of the videographers.

They did in fact reach out and 'touch' each other quite a bit.

you should have polarized them so that they would try to hit eachother... because it looks as if they shared the same polarization.

Not surprising. The one on the left was the larger of the two.  It was also closer to my camera, so it has perspective on it's side as well.

IRL they were both firing like crazy! Faster than the camera could capture it.
