Is holding the neck necessary? Or recommended? Because i just now noticed none of my fellow tubas do that, and a lot of people i see on youtube do that.
@suprmacdaddy It's just like a comfort zone for sousaphone players.
We have kids who will leave their left arm down all together, we have some who will hold the neck/mouth piece, and we have some who cradle the bottom of the tube.
Im just learning how to play for marching band (i play clarinet in concert), and so far it hurts like a bitch. I was wonderin how long that lasts before you get used to it.
@PunkxCherub I will get better, its probably already better by the time I've posted (sorry for the delay) if not I would make sure to do cool downs after you rehearse.
@PunkxCherub I've played tuba for over 30 years and you may never get used to it. Try a pad and a bunch of Iboprophen? The worst for me was, at 90 lbs sopping wet in jr.high, carrying a Conn brass sousaphone in a 4 to 5 mile parade in the middle of summer. Certainly made me rethink my instrument choice at the time! The fiberglass are much easier to deal with! Stick with it...nothing quite like the tuba and I'm still playing in city concert and symphony bands!
@PunkxCherub We are just alike. Im going to start playing tuba next year in the spring. im practicing on baritone to get the fingerings down fisr. Well now i kno what its going to feel like
@albertwesker36 Um what? He said it hurts like a bitch, read what he said first dumbass. I told him to go to the gym so he can work on his body, AS IN GET STRONGER.
They make a shoulder pad for the sousaphone, but you can save money and just get a towel and fold it 2-3 times and put it on your shoulder and let the sousaphone rest on it.. It helps but it will take about a year b4 your shoulder gets use to the weight of the sousaphone on it... I played the sousaphone for 6 years (4 in high school and 2yrs for Furman university )
its a tuba, its okay if you didnt know what it was, idk why people think everyone knows it all to make dumb as comments, its a sousaphone, often called tuba
Yea, I know, I didnt have time to tune, I actually was not there to stay long but I ended up visiting and making the video. the guy who is whistling is the owner of the sousaphone and its just right for him so yea...but thanks for comments guys keep em coming k. ~peace~
i just recently started tuba, from bass clarinet... what i dont get... is how you really totally know which know is which; and how you really know which one is the right notee... help me someone????
Practice. Even get a tuner that says which note your playing. The best thing to do is to practice going up and down on one valve and then do another. Remeber. The faster you blow the air the high the note. The slower the lower. It all depends on the speed of the air, how your lips are.
oh snap i played this last year in concert band my freshmen year at my highschool. it took me along time to figure out to play it and the low d's were hard for me to get cuz i had been switched from bc baritone to tuba and i had only been playing since for a few months im alot better now. i have to be im the only tuba
nice job, you guys should check our mexican regional, it may not be what ur into but check out some of the music to see how those guys play its freaking sick
wow.... your SIGHTREADING that!? wow!! you must be like REALLY good!!! i'm not good at sightreading... but i'm not bad i guess either.. but anyways.. good job ^_^
If I may say so, you have a good articulation. On the other hand, check your sousaphone with a tuner. I think it's not completely tuned. Easy to do by sliding the tubes in or out. Or your music store can advise on how to do it. Please feel free to comment also on my playing (search for pcrom)
Sorry I don't know what you mean by grade 6 as I didn't have music class on sousaphone.
What I was trying to say is tune your sousaphone or let someone do it. When tuned, it is much easyer to play. If it's a little out of tune you have to correct that with your lips and that's not good for getting an easy tone out of the instrument.
i've never seen a gold sousaphone, the ones at my school are silver. just to make sure, you were getting ready for marching right? cuz if you werent i think that it would be weird to play a sousaphone for a normal concert. sounded good, but since i play the trombone trombones will always be the best ;P
