  • I can't think for one moment why anyone would burn down this iconic building that embelished the heart of Tameside. If anything it was a flaw of the material and fire safety that was at fault. A shame that it burnt down i loved that place and the new market hall is good and by sheer accident has brought back some of what we had. Long live this market hall.

  • Probably set on purpose for the council or some one high up, like Gorton tub was. Sadly the powers that be here in the UK can do that and no one says anything. It makes you wonder about other things such as terror attacks...

  • My Nan was heart broken, and so was I. She used to shop there with her friend. But still, the have rebuilt it, so that's good!

  • Was that an accident? I wonder.

  • @2008Sameoldfitup They say it was an electrical fault. Im not 100% convinced though...

  • roy west

  • @2008Sameoldfitup ''roy west''?

  • I got very emotional watching this video, I'm just glad that the building was saved and is now open as a market once again.

  • What a tragedy. I used to love Gleaves' biscuit stall.

  • Did you also know that this footage was used on north west tonight?

  • yeah unfortunately i thought i could make a quick buck out of it and only got £50 but better in my pocket than theirs lol. I should have given it to the BBC they would have taken care of it more.

  • I didn't realise your footage was so good Dad, it's very sad about the market hall but hey it's reopened now, have you been to it yet????

  • yeah went inside and met the market manager he was so grateful for the dvd i gave him. It was great to go back in and you can almost reorientate yourself with the stalls being somewhat in the same place as before, amazing.

  • i saw this on the news the day after and physically cried..............

so sad to see the end of an iconic building, all that gorgeous wrought iron work lost forever.....

now reconstructed it will never be the same again.........
