Several folks here have mentioned Natalie Cole's cover of this song. I'm being very opinionated here, I concede, her version is nice, but Jennifer Holliday's version is just a sensual sigh away from being ALMOST as great as D. J.'s original....just sayin'.
One of the most under-appreciated Soul Men of all time! I play this song and "She Believes In Me" whenever I want to get back to the essence of why I starting loving this kind of music in the first place.
This music was part of my love education. I am so glad that he and others were part of my growing up. I am still a romantic, an idealist and a believer in true love.
Yeah this IS how life should be lived,, and LOVE should be LOVED, its the only way...baby baby baby , I love you, so say you Love me......woooooooohoooooo
RIGHT ON !!! That's what i'm talking about... this song was made during an era when Music was Music... wow I am so thankful to you nyseamex... for sharing a beautiful piece of our past with the present and future.
Nobody can top this comment , How about he sang this song for my wife and i at our church in Lancaster Ca. Ha Ha Ha Ha .. I emulated him when i was a teenager and today he is a close friend and fellow brother.
Thank you for this post. Such a wonderful song. I love you tube, it keeps all the classic alive. I don't even like too much of hte music today, and don't follow it. But when I was coming up listening to music like this and the motown sond, four tops, etc... I had the box on everyday!!! All up in the mirror with my brush, singing along, hahahah I had to laugh at myself for that!
would anyone be familiar with the version that says...say e yea e yea aha...say e yea e yea.... and it repeats til the end? My daughter and I are trying to figure out who sings that version. i have only heard DJ rogeers' version but it does not have that one lil small part at the end.
i remember when dj was our choir director at st. paul cogic in los angeles he could sing off the chain back then in the 70's very gifted praise god for the gift.
This is a classic slow jam. Its exciting to see that there has been over 57,000 views of this artists work. Just thing if each person paid a dollar for this jam and we could get it directly to the artist. I wonder where he is today like so many other black artist who didn't get paid like they should. How can this technology be used for the artist to get paid? In a capitalist society, this is how we ensure we continue to get what we want. We have to take care of our artist better.
Oh, If I can only go back and just feel like I did when I first heard that song....I'll always love, but I'll never be a 17 year old boy in love again :-(
I remember listening to this song in the hallway of a girl's building I was trying to date. She didn't even like me, but I was trying to get her to like me, or better, love me. I'm smiling and thinking about that day now.
This song was the jam, I met him back in the summer of '77 at the Total Experience night club in L.A on Crenshaw Blvd. at a rehearsal for the now famous Gap Band and he was just cool as hell, I believe he was the one who got them up and running, I hope he's still around...he had a beautiful voice!

I was lucky enough to see D.J. Rogers in concert at the Shrine in Los Angeles with my wife to be-the Boy was Bad. Blackness at it's best. No one should ever try to remake this song, it is his alone.
Just a wee message to apologise for thanking the wrong person for posting this song......well i am scottish....thank you for posting nyseamex....and i think i have this right.
My favorite song by DJ Rogers...Total Class! When did we go from beautiful love songs filled with emotion and melodies such as this one, which could give you absolute goosebumps. A time of some of the best music that ever was and ever will be..
No music like OLD SCHOOL MUSIC!
Those were the days and this will always be the MUSIC! Miss those days!
Great music, memories, people and the BEST of times!
@2009Denisem It says real music for real people, well i could not agree more, and this comment by Denise is also for real people who love real music......truly stunning song, so full of passion....a class act matched by the comment. Years ago I went to a concert here in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium, and D.J. Rogers was one of the many vocalists- the boy turned the Shrine out and I mean turned it o u t!!! Once in every blue a song comes along like this- others waste their time trying to record it- but is for sure D.J.'s the best. Hell, it is one the best songs period...
they used to play this song at 5AM on weekdays when i was in nursing school in new orleans (pre-katrina). i was never late for clinicals--no snooze button-- this song will make you sit straight up in bed and sing along! thanks Mr. Rogers, nyseamex, and to the DJ who played this song!

OMG...................I love this song!!!! You Tube has shyt you just can't find anywhere else. In high school when this came out!!!!! This is Music!!!!!
@Jazzicocoa Ditto! when this jam came out I was in high school with raging hormones. had to play this over and over again-especially when it came time to say "good night!" I fdlt like I perfected "grinding'.....miss those days
I close my eyes and I'm back in 1975 in High School hearing this. I miss those days back in East Los Angeles kickin it in my old varrio. Where did the years go??? To be 16 yrs old again! lol I wouldn;'t want to be 16 in this day. The music today and the style sucks. We danced and dressed better.
a57moon:LOL.. I was actually singing on the session. If you look on the back of the album jacket, you'll see my name in the credits for each song. My maiden name is Joyce Wright.
@JoycePierce You mean you were actually part of the recording dates? Or like the rest of us..... sang all the notes, lyrics and adlibs ( lead AND background) every time we could...especially in the car! I've GOT to get this on a cd so I can play it while driving again. LOVED the looks from others when I sang it....... especially..... sssssaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY you love me
This is the Jam!!! For the longest time...I didn't know who sung this song. Thanks for posting it! Great song for "True Lovers". I'm feelin it & always have
I remember in my 20's this song got me thru many a long night when I was working 2 jobs, raising my kids and being lonely....my kids love it too. This is a true classic.
I first heard this song on my summer vacation in North Carolina, i was 14 and in love with a girl i had met down there. Everytime i here this song i reminise about that summer....wow, the good ol days. When life was care free!!!
This one takes me back to 7th grade, and basement parties on the Westside of Chi Town. Makes me grateful to still be above the ground instead of below. WOW!
This is STILL one of my all time favorite songs. The voice, lyrics and the music makes it complete. I was older when I heard Ms Jennifer Holiday version of this song and I enjoyed it. However, I later baught a old school CD, heard DJ's version and fell in love w/ his version, "snap", LOL. Because he sang from a mans point of view. NYseamex, Thanks for posting.
I used to have a pet dog named Champ who loved this record. As soon as the violin strings played at the beginning of the song, Champ would stop whatever he was doing, and his ears would perk up. At the end of the song, as DJ Rogers started hitting higher notes, Champ would start howling like a wolf. It was so funny.
this was great in the 70's and is still good to me now. i dont know exactly what was going on in my life at that time but i use to play it over and over. this man can sangggggggg. i remembered him and went to google him and i found the one album i loved by him. this was realllll singing. i love it when he says "i get off when you say baby, baby i love you" where is dj?
Sitting here alone in my room tonight, wanting and needing the comfort of a man, this song has taken me back! All the things a real woman wants to hear from her man. Thanks for this....awesome!
this would be a nice wedding song to suprise your bride, i mean the madea song is awsome but this would sound good a the reception too you know i cant re the year i think i was in jr high i'm 48 now
Let me tell you something. I am a Bishop in "The Lords Church",and i've been a fan for over 30 years. There is nobody like D.J. He has often preached in my church and have performed for us in Lancaster Ca.He recently appeared as a special guest on my New recording "PMG Live".He is an icon
I remember loving this song after seeing DJ Rogers on Soul Train in `76 , I was 13, I found the album 2yrs. ago used ,still makes feel the same way it did at 13 ,I`m now 46. great post.
this is good even though im actually into rap, reggae and stuff i still really like to listen to jazz, soul, funk etc i mean without these guys all the music that we listen to and love wouldnt be here
I am a young one. I heard this song for the first time from the first black radio in America (AM1070 WDIA Memphis) 4-5 years ago. Great lyrics and it has soul. D.J. is the man. They pull that one out of the closet. Love live D.J.
What a great song! You can't find this on I tunes! DJ did a wonderful job on this song! Thank you for posting this. This vocalist never got the credit he deserved. One of the best ever!
Damn! I said I would cry. This is the song of my teens. There is still no song that touches my heart in this way. Maybe because I was playing it for the first girl to break my heart.
Oh! sweet High school memories from 1976. All the friends and people that I loved ,most of them gone now. How I wish I had a time machine to go back to my home in East Los Angeles. And how I miss my 1973 Chevy caprice Classic lowrider!
Does anyone know if there's another version by a black man at that time because i remember somebody singing another version that sounded just as soulful
anybody heard a song he did called TRUST ME? this man is awesome! thank you for sharing!

I am a young one. I heard this song for the first time from the first black radio in America (AM1070 WDIA Memphis) 4-5 years ago. Great lyrics and it has soul. D.J. is the man. They pull that one out of the closet. Love live D.J.
