Great video. I read some of the criticism...let's all relax. Great song, great era and great singer/songwriter. I lived on South Street in the early 80's, near 5th, and it was a rockin place to live and hang out. Robert Hazard was king at the time. His later music was just as good although in a different vein. The anniversay of his death is coming up...so let's all hoist a cold one to a great musician, one who made life so much richer for us all.
I am 1 on Robert's girlfriends - the hundreds - who lived with him for 4 years during the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" series and hundreds of other songs I of course thought were written for me. We lived on Samson St in Phila,, Pa. I raised his kid for years - from first marriage - Corrina.
When South St. was fun.....before the gangs started all that bullshit looting, and attacking innocent people for no reason, because they have no value for life, and property...
I saw Robert and the Hero's at the olde Talley Ho when I was a senior in HS in the 80's... The Hooters were also on the bill that night... just freakin magical what it did... no matter the troubles I've had... this song plays in my head and its OK... Thanks Robert RIP Bro
Was thinking about my Ipod 80's updates and Rember Robert Hazard from a DJ at WPST Tom Cunningham '.. TC now if I can add Change Reaction and Escalator of Life .... RIP RH....
Is anything of Robert Hazard & the Heroes available on CD? My daughter DJ's part time, & does an '80's night, but never heard of him. (OY) I taught her not to "pirate," (unless she's stealing a ship) but I can't seem to find their music for sale...
I had long forgot about this tune til a young dj at the local tavern played it.Now as soon as I walk into the place an sit down, its the next song played.
This video sank Hazard's career because my nitwit soon to be ex brother in law was picked to be the nimrod sneaking into the club. What a douchebag he turned out to be.
I'm quite certain that a)this video did not sink RH's career and b) even if it had, it would have had nothing to do with the nanosecond spent showing your ex bro in law. Oy.
My friends and I had the awesome opportunity of following Robert Hazard and the Heroes up and down the east coast with generous Bill Eibb putting us on the "guest list " for some 70 plus shows. Each show was memorable...especially filming this video all day at J.C. Dobbs. amongst Robert's loyal followers. I saw him play a month before his passing at the park in T-ville Thanx Robert for the beatiful music may your memory live on Hi to annette marie terese vince carol and all who danced all nite !
Aw, it's not gay! It seems corny and dated now, but it wasn't at the time. This was a monstrously popular song in Philly. The thing that hurt his career was the very over-produced, sanitized first RCA album, which had more to do with the "suits" at RCA.
Couldn't agree more. Robert had some dynamite New Wave, as good as anything from the UK at the time. That first RCA album pretty well sucked the life out of his music.
And this supposed South Street crowd - in a word - Lame. Sorry to anyone there, except maybe Randy ;o). This gang looks like it was brought in from South Philly and the burbs. Like no one I remember hanging with on South Street in the early 80s.
Thank you so much for putting this vid up.I was at this shoot as an 11yr old. My aunt Jan bartended at Dobbs for years and was a good friend to Robert and all the Dobbs gang. She is in Denmark now and feels the loss from across the pond.
As a local to the area I remember these days well. You really brought back some nice memories for me and I appreciate it!!! Wow how South Street has changed since those days.
I saw Robert Hazard & The Heroes many many times back in the 80's. I mostly saw them at The Empire Rock Club & The Ripley. I love this video filmed at Dobbs! Brings back alot of memories.
Thank you Robert Hazard for the Great Songs & Performances. Thanks for all you gave us in your short time here. See you in Heaven!
My girlfriend and myself sat in the middle of the stadium during that show in Philly and it has to go down as one of the best concerts in my life! If you can imagine Escalator of Life booming as loud as possible and echoing back and forth in that stadium! Plus it was so hot there was this guy walking around everybody with a golf flag and when he found a passed out person the golf cart came thru the crowd and they took the person away. Plus the "Smoke" was very thick and hung low to the ground!
My first concert was Robert Hazard and the Heroes after a Phillies game in the 80's. I still can see the lights going out and hearing the notes to the beginning of Escalator of Life. I was enthralled and enamoured, as well as awe-struck. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and the amazing music that will live on forever. May all those in that better place who will now be blessed with your presence enjoy your talents and gifts. RIP as my thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
Wow, J.C.Dobbs... Robt. Hazzard RIP,DWIGHT YOAKAM, Tommy Conwell, The Stray Cats, Steve Guyger, ... Sister...ahem... BLue, The J.B. Rhythm Band....Oh won't you tell me...where have all the good times gone ?
Thank you for giving a whole lot of us some of the best times in our lives! Rest in Peace and make some great music in Heaven. (Also, RIP Dobbs! Pontiac my ass!)
rob had great times jamming with you back in the early 80's even though we were two differnt styles of music. moorestown & cherry hill new jersey were the days my friend, sigma sounds studios i could go on. RIP
Remembering you, our youth, having fun, dreaming dreams and dreams coming true. I'm so happy for the love you found and the successes you enjoyed. Thanks for the music. Go with God. We'll catch up at the party on the other side.
Thier original 'demo' stuff was alot better,it had less pop sound but 80s record producers just HAD to have that synco overdose slapped on everything. Same with the Hooters and Tommy Conwell. WMMR played it all before the signing.
Did RH & The Heroes do a song with a lyric in it about driving around in a Suburu? Seems like I can hum that line but dont know the rest of the song or even if they did it.Anyone?
The song you're thinking of is 'Hang Around With You' from his debut EP in '82. This is purely from a 20+ year memory: Nothing's working right I can't sleep at night I can't pay the rent All my money's spent 'Cause I just wanna hang around with you (X2) You can keep the cash (Forgotten) You can have my Suburu I ain't got no home I'm just a bag of bones With no problem point of view
anamercedes 1960, yes, it was. I remember in 1982, it was middle August, there was this concert at the old JFK Stadium and the headliner was Genesis. The other acts on the venue were Robert Hazard and The Heroes, Blondie, A Flock of Seagulls and Elvis Costello and the Attractions. A friend Mike and my two cousins Perry and Michael went with me. Tickets only costed $18.95 a piece and we snuck four gallons of Moosehead beer along with four large Italian hoagies we ate for that long day.
I was at that show also. I had never heard of Robert Hazard and the Heroes when they opened the show, but by the end of their set I was hooked. Went out and bought all their albums and was a fan from then on. RIP Robert, thank you for the music and the great memories.
Yup, that's Dobbs. I'd forgotten that it appears they hired to cast of Dancin' on Air to fill the place. (lol) Still a cool video, just wished Robert would have kept the sideburns!
Brings back a lot of memories of skinny ties (with a paperclip for a tie bar of course!!)and used tuxedo jackets with the sleeves pushed up to the elbows !!

Sorry, I have to disagree! I worked the Ripley as a spotlight operator and as Steven Starr's assistant, and my husband was the monitor engineer there (George Pierson, the "legendary sound man". Dobb's was the only place where you came out of the back to the stage like this. Plus, I was at this video shoot!
You forgot to mention that "Escalator of Life" was another song that played on a lot of the Philly FM rock stations, too, during the early 1980's and did you mean cheesesteak glory ?!!
