Let's see: Airport Police are union, pilots are union, flight attendants are union, re-fuelers are union, mechanics are union, the people who launch the space shuttle are union, the people who maintain Air Force One are union, the people who ran into the Twin Towers to save people- union- the baggage screeners at the airports cannot have a union? This guy is bought off by contractors- they are in the process of contracting them all out and contractors don't want employees to have a union.
Is this guy really serving in the senate? What happened to our great nation? Take your freemarkets and half formed opinions about the economy and talk to the mirror so you have someone who agrees with you and thinks your erudite..Shit! The unions brought decent wages, respect, and a chance for a working man to raise a family. Every concession from the bosses was paid for in BLOOD, and broken backs. Go work in a mine, frame all day, pound steel at the forge. Then come and lecture us about it.
@cem404 You've been paying too much attention to the 'drive-by" media. Americans have more of a chance of keeping their paychecks (less taxes) with republicans than they have with the socialist democrats. OMG, man, do your homework! The dems want all your money so they can decide who is "worthy" of it, then redistribute it accordingly, regardless whether you're the one who worked for it or not. That's what socialism is. And the dems are all about it.
Sandio! stop crying about taxes. really, you're pitiful. nobody's trying to take your money. We live in a capitalist/fascist state(look up the definition) and we're no where near socialism or communism. No where close. We were fleeced, and bankrupted by a pack of jackals for eight years, spending our wealth and our heros on 2 senseless invasions and occupations; now!; you're gonna lose your mind about gubberment cheese, health care for an illegal, and unions. Are you stupid or ignorant? both?
@bry3921 That's a joke, right? Otherwise, I can only assume that you've had your head up the "drive-by" media's ass for the past year. Although, why should YOU worry about anything anyway? U don't need to worry about things such as a paycheck and taxes, bcuz Obama just redistributes the working folk's paychecks anyway. So sit back and enjoy other people's money for now. Unfortunately, it won't last bcuz, eventually, Obama will run out of other ppl's money and you'll have to get a job.

Another example of an agency that was destroyed by unions is the postal service. The Nat'l Organization of Letter Carriers (NALC) union is another union that takes advantage of union dues & goes on lavish trips (Hawaii, Disney World, etc.) and does virtually nothing for the employees. They are destroying the postal service brick by brick. The postal service is so far in debt bcuz of the NALC demands, it will never recover. They lose millions of $ a day. Just another example of uselessness.

If anyone wants examples of how "great" unions r, look at the auto industry that we had to bail out. Who do you think ran them into the ground? I'll tell you. It was the United Auto workers (UAW) union. I guess all you libs really enjoyed using your tax dollars to bail them out after the UAW destroyed them. Also, google SEIU and find out what they're about. Their union pres visited the white house more than anyone else in 2009. He and the Obama admin are thick as thieves (no pun intended).

I agree with Demint. This country doesn't need unions for our security administrations. We never had them before and certainly don't need them now. All Unions do is prevent progress in all organizations. They take union dues from unsuspecting employees and go on lavish trips (mostly boondogles, like some of our elected officials). I've seen it with my own eyes. Unions are useless! All they will do is hinder the security of the US. We don't need them involved in our national defense issues

Unions protect workers. Some people are for Wall Street, and some people are for Main Street. instead of bitching about the UAW why don't you confront executive salaries and bonuses.
@SCwest16 Heck yeah! I agree with you about the executives being over-paid. There's no doubt that they didn't deserve the salary and bonuses they got, especially since they poorly managed the companies. In my opinion, they were wimps too. They should have had more "chops" in dealing with the UAW. Unfortunately, it appears that the UAW was running the show, rather than the execs. Those execs should not have allowed that to happen! As a bus. mgr myself, I would have never let that happen.
And now, no one has won b cuz of the mis-mgt. The employees suffer, the exec's don't have their "cush" jobs anymore and the shareholders are at a loss also. And it's all b cuz mgt and the UAW over-reached!
Gee, many of our union members are straight out of the military- fresh back from Iraq, Afghanistan- desert storm, Viet Nam, and in the past Korea 7 WW2. I know some vets I would like you to look in the eye and call them lazy and a threat to U.S. security you idiot.

This is the same guy who said healthcare is Obama's waterloo, and participant in teabagger movement! This is a clear example of republicans playing politics with National Security! If unions are so bad and get in the way of security, than why are most, if not all policemen union members? Republicans and faux should be ashamed of themselves playing politics w/ national security issues! These are real threats and not 2012 elections. DO YOUR FUCKING JOBS AND NOT PLAY POLITICS W/NATIONAL SECURITY!
"#10. Labor Power is Suppressed. Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed." 14 Points was written in 2004 by Dr. Laurence Britt
The 14th Points of Facism is a historical document on how a totalitarian goverment emerges.
Nationalism, Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause, Supremacy of the Military, Disdain for the Law. Corporate power protected and labor power suppressed
It's all about "at will" employment. Most contractors or hourly workers, if they knew what "at will" employment is, would be against it. It's law in some states. Basically means the boss can fire you for no reason. Giving him or her the power of coersion so you'll do the dirty work. Unions need to change, but left unchecked management definitely will abuse labor.
Well, look at the flip side, unless you are under a contract you can quit or resign at any time, leaving the employer short-handed and wasting the time and money spent training you. If I'm going to spend my money employing you, then you should do the work your hired to perform.
LOL, once again Kata, you failed to read my post. Go back to school and learn how to read. I said you are free to leave. And if you are paid to do the work, then you should do the work you were hired to do. And just who freed the slaves? I believe it was a Republican named Lincoln and the Radical Republican caucus in Congress at the time. When you go back to school, brush up on your history too pal
how childish. lincoln's republican party was nothing like the gop of today. the comparison is invalid. apparently, anyone could get you to eat a turd if they stuffed into a hershey bat package.
What's a "hershey bat package"? Did you just make that up? I'm so proud, your finally getting creative. The Republican party has always been a party based on free market principles. Free Land, Free Markets, and Free Labor was the rallying cry of the 1860 election. Today, we are still for free markets, and we won on the free land and free labor by giving federal lands to homesteaders and freeing the slaves. Now we are fighting socialistic policies designed to make us all slaves of the state
Wha-???? First of all, you're not TRYING to block the Nominee, you ARE blocking the nominee. Secondly, if he's qualified and a good guy, you're the one that playing politics with our security.
Unions aren't bad, but there should be a healthy balance between labor and employers. Too much power to the employers results in child labor, 72 work weeks, and low wages which is ultimately fatal to an economy. Too much power to labor and you have the collapse of business as we saw with GM and Chrysler.
Notice how DeMint never said anything about HOW blocking the confirmation of Erroll Southers as head of the Transportation Security Agency is supposed to prevent airport security people from joining a union or engaging in collective bargaining.
Nor does he mention the fact that lots of security agencies (ie-Police and Fire Departments) are unionized, but are not allowed to strike, and have their wages set by binding arbitration rather than collective bargaining.
Oh, well excuse me, I'm sorry, I guess the 80 dollar an hour wages (with benefits added in) had nothing to do with it. BTW, as a mechanic, GM puts out some good vehicles, and some really good engines. Every manufacturer has problems with their designs, but overall, GM has produced a good product in the last 20 years. The biggest problem with GM motors was the intake gasket in the 60 degree V6 family, which was fixed in 02.
Yeah, well do the math and see for yourself how much Union concessions costs the Automotive industry. While ur at it, check and see how much cash for clunkers hurt the used car industry, the used auto parts industry, and auto mechanics across the country. It has killed my business. I went from working 6 days a week, to working 3 days a week, and I don't really know how much longer I can keep my doors open. Think I'm gonna get a bail-out? I doubt it
No, it's true. I've seen plenty of evidence corroborating it. Benefits and wages cost the Big 3 quite a bit per person. Compare that to the less unionized or non-union foreign automakers in the US whose costs person are WAY less, at least $20/hour less.
I've got a better example. The average American automotive executive makes more than 400X what the average assembly line worker makes while the average Japanese automotive executive (including Japanese factories in the U.S.) makes a piffling 10X more than the average line worker. Add to that the fact that American corporations are saddled with having to pay for health insurance for their employees while foreign companies don't, and you'll see why it was the American companies that went broke.
You've also got to love how that bully-boy pilots union has managed to force the airlines to pay their pilots almost $25 K per year. No wonder the work ethic is dead in America. ;)
Who's on the other end of the line when you dial 911? Who shows up with a gun or a hose or an ambulance? Who brings your food to your grocer and the bus to your corner? Try it without organization some time, without seasoned and trained employees who are incentivized...by good benefits and secure seniority...to STAY on the job for 20 or more years and therefore have THAT level of expertise when IT'S NEEDED!
There are far better techniques when managing a company.
One that comes to mind, is the "Deming" method of management, an American ideal, the Japanese have been using for half a century. It's a system that rids an environment of a fear based work place, profit sharing giving workers ownership of their job. (google it)
Unions are good on intentions but end up being more corrupt.
Have you lived or worked in Japan? Would you like their life style? I think not. Sure, Deming is a great "management" model, it's just not a great model to try and raise a family under.
Ask any BOEING machinist: They have the Deming model in Seattle. 60% are under some form of lay-off or diminished work schedule at any given time, living on fixed income and under private surveillance, least they take work that will jeopardize their seniority.
Wrong person to ask... I did live in Japan for four years and yes I did like their life style.
If there is no consumer demand for products there is no management style, in the universe, that will save a company. The Deming method has it's limitations.
Being gaijin in Japan ain't hard. Some people like the subtle limitations. Wondering how you enjoyed maintaining an auto (if you could) or meeting their immigrant work restrictions. I never stayed long enough to require a visa or a labor card.
I owned 3 cars while living there and yes, the "road tax" is ridiculous. Their immigration laws are the most racist I have ever seen, next to the Israelis.
That being said; They are the most efficient society I have ever seen given their limited resources and they can thank Dr. Deming for that.
There you go; putative taxation and institutionalized racism. Quite a system to tout. If you were a salary-man you wouldn't see your children during the week and your wife would be supplementing the household income by hosting (if she had looks) or taking in day work from a neighborhood straw-boss. You lot in life is settled in nationwide high school placement. No thank you.
It sounds like typical Republican B.S. I'll translate "Obama may hire union workers and that may empower an organization I'm trying to destroy because I believe corporations need free reign to make me richer, even when they destroy everything in sight."
there is a big movement on the right to squash unions all together. UNIONS BUILT THIS COUNTRY AND REAGAN SQUASHED THEM. SMALL BUSINESSES HAVE BEEN SQUASHED BY THE WALMARTS BECAUSE OF THIS AND ABOLISHING ANTI-TRUST.
As long as our airways are as safe as possible who really cares if the TSA workers can join a union. Not as if they have an enviable job were people bitch complain and whine all day long at you. Demint yet another GOP assclown from South Carolina. And this douche wants to run for president.
All four of Hitler, Franco, Mussolini and Pinochet went after the labor unions first. (And yet, according to Glenn Beck and the Cato institute, all of those guys were socialists. So, I guess the eradication of labor unions was all part of a fantastic deception to make us think otherwise? It was sure convincing.)
This just shows DeMint cares nothing about the security of Americans. If he will do this just to stop the formation of a Union. Republicans do HATE America!
One of the things I hate most about republicans is how they say the most ridiculous & dishonest things, with such a firm, serious, straight face, and that some people actually BELIEVE them for that.
Some people are just so goddamn dumb. Give them a firm handshake, look them in the eye, and they are putty in your hands. "He's a stand up guy. He won't back down."
No wonder their favorite president ever was a fucking actor.
Just because candidate for the position makes a statement about he likes to have his employees with union benefits you are going to block his nomination for 4 MONTHS! Prove it Jimmy Poo!
So far Erroll Southers has refused to make any statement about whether he will allow the TSA employees collective bargaining rights or not. DeMint (under orders from the Heritage Foundation) is blocking Southers' confirmation until he promises NOT to give them collective bargaining powers.
Here's a write up on the guy DeMint is blocking. His CV is pretty impressive.
I know! I knew that regular right wingers on youtube and elsewhere think everyone in this country agrees with them, just because their immediate circle of friends does, but I didn't know the RNC itself could be so stupid.
absolutely democrats enact policies that cripple all 50 states while republicans enact policies that only help "theirs". how astute an observation. if only you had another option.
I don't but you are foolish to believe what democrats tell you. I don't believe what any of these assholes say, but I do look at track records. My comment to Richard I think is fitting and accurate. Look at the most in debt and financially troubled cities or states and look at who has run them for the last 20-30 years. Democrats fail every time, while republicans help only THEIR interests, that Mr IATNWO, is the tale of the tape here.
"Labor doesn't Deserve to wield the power of economies of scale."
Wages are paid against mortgages that drive real estate markets that set tax districts that build schools and settle communities that attract businesses...and on and on...
that is because when capital organizes for greater bargaining power the consumer, i.e. us - benefits with lower prices and greater purchasing power, but when labour wields the same power, we pay more. Add on top of that the fresh memories of union failures in the 1970's that helped many unionized companies go under during that recession, and that is why labour enjoys only moderate wide support these days.
I think that is the case, insurance can only do what it does because of government rules in its favour. you have no free markets for insurance, you have government mandated controls. I live in Toronto, and our manufacturing output has fallen steeply in the last 35 years. the cause is more than just unions themselves, but the first step over the ledge was the unions, which lead to public support for free trade, and we end up here. conservatives and liberals aren't happy with the current state
no it woudln't be, you mistake free markets with our current situation. This is a mixed economic market, any analyst or teacher will tell you that. Free markets is a concept, one that hasn't been in existance for the better part of 70 years.
This is the same guy who said healthcare is Obama's waterloo, and participant in teabagger movement! This is a clear example of republicans playing politics with National Security! If unions are so bad and get in the way of security, than why are most, if not all policemen union members? Republicans and faux should be ashamed of themselves playing politics w/ national security issues! These are real threats and not 2012 elections. DO YOUR FUCKING JOBS AND NOT PLAY POLITICS W/NATIONAL SECURITY!

See how sick these Republicans really are?
To them, organized labor is more of a threat than those terrorists they incessantly moan and piss over.
mrbadguysan 2 years ago 6
"#10. Labor Power is Suppressed. Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed." 14 Points was written in 2004 by Dr. Laurence Britt

Fascist government?
Hey, don't be so hard on Mussolini. Sure he eliminated unions, but at least the trains ran on time because they had maximum flexibility.

The 14th Points of Facism is a historical document on how a totalitarian goverment emerges.
Nationalism, Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause, Supremacy of the Military, Disdain for the Law. Corporate power protected and labor power suppressed
All fit so well with the Republican part.

Redthatsmyname 2 years ago 4
Well, look at the flip side, unless you are under a contract you can quit or resign at any time, leaving the employer short-handed and wasting the time and money spent training you. If I'm going to spend my money employing you, then you should do the work your hired to perform.
d00mie74 2 years ago
bullshit. you're paid for the work you do. You do not give you soul to the company to tell you when and how you can leave. America freed the slaves.
KataVideo 2 years ago
LOL, once again Kata, you failed to read my post. Go back to school and learn how to read. I said you are free to leave. And if you are paid to do the work, then you should do the work you were hired to do. And just who freed the slaves? I believe it was a Republican named Lincoln and the Radical Republican caucus in Congress at the time. When you go back to school, brush up on your history too pal
d00mie74 2 years ago
how childish. lincoln's republican party was nothing like the gop of today. the comparison is invalid. apparently, anyone could get you to eat a turd if they stuffed into a hershey bat package.
KataVideo 2 years ago
What's a "hershey bat package"? Did you just make that up? I'm so proud, your finally getting creative. The Republican party has always been a party based on free market principles. Free Land, Free Markets, and Free Labor was the rallying cry of the 1860 election. Today, we are still for free markets, and we won on the free land and free labor by giving federal lands to homesteaders and freeing the slaves. Now we are fighting socialistic policies designed to make us all slaves of the state

Unions aren't bad, but there should be a healthy balance between labor and employers. Too much power to the employers results in child labor, 72 work weeks, and low wages which is ultimately fatal to an economy. Too much power to labor and you have the collapse of business as we saw with GM and Chrysler.
d00mie74 2 years ago 2
Notice how DeMint never said anything about HOW blocking the confirmation of Erroll Southers as head of the Transportation Security Agency is supposed to prevent airport security people from joining a union or engaging in collective bargaining.
Nor does he mention the fact that lots of security agencies (ie-Police and Fire Departments) are unionized, but are not allowed to strike, and have their wages set by binding arbitration rather than collective bargaining.
TrollBuster9090 2 years ago 2
How does that have anything to do with my comment?
d00mie74 2 years ago
worker salaries didn't crash GM, 6- and 7-figure executive payouts for implementing policies that brought down quality and sales killed GM.
KataVideo 2 years ago 2
Oh, well excuse me, I'm sorry, I guess the 80 dollar an hour wages (with benefits added in) had nothing to do with it. BTW, as a mechanic, GM puts out some good vehicles, and some really good engines. Every manufacturer has problems with their designs, but overall, GM has produced a good product in the last 20 years. The biggest problem with GM motors was the intake gasket in the 60 degree V6 family, which was fixed in 02.
d00mie74 2 years ago
$80? $60? a myth, a propaganda lie repeated by the useful idiots of the reichwing.
KataVideo 2 years ago 2
Yeah, well do the math and see for yourself how much Union concessions costs the Automotive industry. While ur at it, check and see how much cash for clunkers hurt the used car industry, the used auto parts industry, and auto mechanics across the country. It has killed my business. I went from working 6 days a week, to working 3 days a week, and I don't really know how much longer I can keep my doors open. Think I'm gonna get a bail-out? I doubt it
d00mie74 2 years ago
fine, go broke.
KataVideo 2 years ago
No, it's true. I've seen plenty of evidence corroborating it. Benefits and wages cost the Big 3 quite a bit per person. Compare that to the less unionized or non-union foreign automakers in the US whose costs person are WAY less, at least $20/hour less.
whoo689 2 years ago
bullshit. "evidence" lol. provided by the corporate benefactors and receivers or libertardianism.
fine asshole. YOU volunteer to make less money. YOU. not the Union Workers. YOU.
KataVideo 2 years ago
I've got a better example. The average American automotive executive makes more than 400X what the average assembly line worker makes while the average Japanese automotive executive (including Japanese factories in the U.S.) makes a piffling 10X more than the average line worker. Add to that the fact that American corporations are saddled with having to pay for health insurance for their employees while foreign companies don't, and you'll see why it was the American companies that went broke.
TrollBuster9090 2 years ago 2

Unions are a necessary evil, when faced with, centralized power.
Pleblian 2 years ago
Evil?
Who's on the other end of the line when you dial 911? Who shows up with a gun or a hose or an ambulance? Who brings your food to your grocer and the bus to your corner? Try it without organization some time, without seasoned and trained employees who are incentivized...by good benefits and secure seniority...to STAY on the job for 20 or more years and therefore have THAT level of expertise when IT'S NEEDED!
dogstar7 2 years ago 2
There are far better techniques when managing a company.
One that comes to mind, is the "Deming" method of management, an American ideal, the Japanese have been using for half a century. It's a system that rids an environment of a fear based work place, profit sharing giving workers ownership of their job. (google it)
Unions are good on intentions but end up being more corrupt.
Pleblian 2 years ago
Pleblian,
Have you lived or worked in Japan? Would you like their life style? I think not. Sure, Deming is a great "management" model, it's just not a great model to try and raise a family under.
Ask any BOEING machinist: They have the Deming model in Seattle. 60% are under some form of lay-off or diminished work schedule at any given time, living on fixed income and under private surveillance, least they take work that will jeopardize their seniority.
dogstar7 2 years ago
Actually Dogstar,lol,
Wrong person to ask... I did live in Japan for four years and yes I did like their life style.
If there is no consumer demand for products there is no management style, in the universe, that will save a company. The Deming method has it's limitations.
Pleblian 2 years ago
Being gaijin in Japan ain't hard. Some people like the subtle limitations. Wondering how you enjoyed maintaining an auto (if you could) or meeting their immigrant work restrictions. I never stayed long enough to require a visa or a labor card.
dogstar7 2 years ago
@dogstar
I owned 3 cars while living there and yes, the "road tax" is ridiculous. Their immigration laws are the most racist I have ever seen, next to the Israelis.
That being said; They are the most efficient society I have ever seen given their limited resources and they can thank Dr. Deming for that.
Pleblian 2 years ago
There you go; putative taxation and institutionalized racism. Quite a system to tout. If you were a salary-man you wouldn't see your children during the week and your wife would be supplementing the household income by hosting (if she had looks) or taking in day work from a neighborhood straw-boss. You lot in life is settled in nationwide high school placement. No thank you.

His CV is pretty impressive.

absolutely democrats enact policies that cripple all 50 states while republicans enact policies that only help "theirs". how astute an observation. if only you had another option.

You're stupid to believe what republicans tell you.
IAMtheNewWorldOrder 2 years ago
I don't but you are foolish to believe what democrats tell you. I don't believe what any of these assholes say, but I do look at track records. My comment to Richard I think is fitting and accurate. Look at the most in debt and financially troubled cities or states and look at who has run them for the last 20-30 years. Democrats fail every time, while republicans help only THEIR interests, that Mr IATNWO, is the tale of the tape here.

Why is the sticking point unionization?
Duckeieio 2 years ago
@Duckeieio
Well because clearly,
When Capital organizes to achieve greater bargaining power. That's wonderful.
However somehow when labor organizes, to achieve greater bargaining power. That's horrible.
Notice how that works?
Labor doesn't Deserve to wield the power of economies of scale.
greyflcn 2 years ago 3
"Labor doesn't Deserve to wield the power of economies of scale."
Wages are paid against mortgages that drive real estate markets that set tax districts that build schools and settle communities that attract businesses...and on and on...
Thank you, Econ 101 flunky
dogstar7 2 years ago
that is because when capital organizes for greater bargaining power the consumer, i.e. us - benefits with lower prices and greater purchasing power, but when labour wields the same power, we pay more. Add on top of that the fresh memories of union failures in the 1970's that helped many unionized companies go under during that recession, and that is why labour enjoys only moderate wide support these days.
LeGioNoFZioN 2 years ago
@LeGioNoFZioN
Is that really the case though?
When capital organizes, it certainly gets greater profits for it's shareholders or staff pay.
But that doesn't necessarily mean that the consumers benefit.
Health Insurance for instance.
Massive profits.
Massive increase in prices.
greyflcn 2 years ago
I think that is the case, insurance can only do what it does because of government rules in its favour. you have no free markets for insurance, you have government mandated controls. I live in Toronto, and our manufacturing output has fallen steeply in the last 35 years. the cause is more than just unions themselves, but the first step over the ledge was the unions, which lead to public support for free trade, and we end up here. conservatives and liberals aren't happy with the current state
LeGioNoFZioN 2 years ago
@LeGioNoFZioN
Now for instance, in purely selfish individual "free market" capitalism. What the US is doing would be the ideal, right?
greyfalcon. net/ tradebalance.png
However I hardly see how that's within our best long term interest.
greyflcn 2 years ago
no it woudln't be, you mistake free markets with our current situation. This is a mixed economic market, any analyst or teacher will tell you that. Free markets is a concept, one that hasn't been in existance for the better part of 70 years.
LeGioNoFZioN 2 years ago
@LeGioNoFZioN
"Free markets is a concept, one that hasn't been in existence"
Heh, well this would be a more accurate statement. It's a purist ideal, that hasn't ever existed.
And as such, can never be proven wrong.
