  • perfect harmony! nobody can do this in 2012

  • This video was on VH1 all the time in 1985 when I first had cable tv.

  • fantastic duo and song

  • I can't say how much I love this....♥

  • amazing James Taylor!

  • Absolutely Fantastic!

  • AHH. THE WONDERFUL SOUNDS OF THE CLASSIC FENDER RHODES KEYBOARD. ANOTHER FINE STRING ARRANGEMENT BY THE LATE GENE PAGE. DID YOU EVER HEAR GENE'S STRING ARRANGEMENT FROM THE ROCKET MAN'S TELL ME WHEN THE WHISTLE BLOWS? FROM THE GREAT '75 ALBUM CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY? THOSE PAGE STRINGS. THE MAN WHO BROUGHT BARRY WHITE SONGS TO LIFE. RIP GENE.

  • j.d souther kills this ... their both vocals is bangin!!!!

  • Glad I found this, again after so much time. Nothing like this anymore. Brings back a lot of memories!

  • fuck i thought it was glenn frey backin taylor up all this yrs...lol...

  • @osbornehunter Get yourself a copy of JD Souther's "Black Rose." A truly great record.

  • You see kids back in the day there was real music, written and song by real artist. Music today rock, country, pop is pure garbage!

  • JD looks tired, sleepy or drunk...somebody give him a cup of coffee!!

  • @lovedprincess1....lol, yeah the whole lot of them need a bar of soap and a shower! You see, the singers back in the 80's weren't as hygenic as they appeared on TV...take Mannix for example.

  • I know that the Eagles recorded a couple of JD's songs but didn't JD almost become an Eagle??

  • @mrbabblehead He wrote a ton of songs for the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt...

  • Comment removed

  • Charlene and Lauren Ft. Lauderdale fl, September 1970- 1976

  • @atomic6120-you must not know what high looks like.

  • Waddy!

  • wonderful

  • how can u not like this song?

  • I have to ask this. they both look super high. and knowing JT's background.....

    Mmmmmm?

  • Dear 2011,

    Suck on that.

    Sincerely, 1981.

  • This just captures your heart and never leaves. An era that has gone and will never come back. Maybe it's a generational thing. JT is amazing live. And JD Souther is the anonymous genious behind so many songs he hasn't made famous--including songs recorded by the Eagles. Ahhhhhhh.

  • super harmonies...pure class

  • Love, love this tune!

    Yeah, that's all.

  • awesome i remember when this song only had 5500 hit now almost 100000 great song one of my favs

  • this is one of my favorite songs by him. the other day my grandpa came over and this song was playing and he looked at me and said "wow. didnt know you were into Taylor he's legendary" Duh paw paw!!!

  • He never does this live...wonder why. This was off an interesting record, I think he was having another round of troubles at the time.

  • Nothing like popping the cd in and starting it and this video at the exact same time and listening to it in surround sound!

  • Simply wonderful!

  • Rob Bryden requested this on Wogan , such joy!!!!!! I remember crying so much to this when I was young !!!!! Love JD Souther

  • Hey Mark.

I'm going to miss doing this with you.

Sorry, I could have put this in a message, but 3 of the other guys sent it to me, writing they were going to miss hearing us doing it. (Must be a conspiracyLOL!

Well, maybe not LOL, but there it is.

    Rock

  • JD Souther also sang with Linda Rhondstat on her album titled, " Prisoner in Disguise. " If you get a chance to listen to the title track, you might enjoy it

  • And people wonder why we long for the "good ol' days" of music...this is it.

  • @cfclogan74 AMEN to that.

  • I heard this song in the grocery store n i thought wow i haven't heard that song in years.I said to mom i have to go home n get it on youtube i haven't heard this song in YEARS since i was a child.

  • The man who could have been the "King" of country, but did'nt want it:( John David Souther.. What an amazing voice.

  • @jojoheartspaypay I saw him in concert in Dallas, Texas at The Western Place in 1977. There may have been 25 people there. I was 16 years old..he was superb..Banging my Head Against The Moon!!!

  • This is a great performance but it looks like they just got really high before shooting this video.... ah, heroin sheik

  • @gongadesh Hahaha, I said that too. Between all the speedballs going down on the set, I'm amazed anything got done.

  • @michaeltgrace be nice now

  • @jrmrinaz Hey. It takes one to know one, and I'm comfortable with that. 2:40 - Souther's totally knodding out.

  • Love this song, great music that I wish was played more often than a lot of the shit music played today! Both voices compliment each other well. Sounds almost like an "Eagles" song..... I always listen to this song because it's brilliant! I don't have anything to compare it too at the time because I was too young to understand the lyrics, just a young kid! Thanks for posting.... =)

  • When this song first came out it was very relevant to what I was going through at the time. So, in addition to being a great song, it has special meaning. That's what great music is all about.

  • WARNING: This song is extremely addictive.

  • so amazing this duet... just great stuff :)

  • A time when we had REAL music!!!

  • Look Ma'...no Auto-Tune! Great Song.

  • for ages I was trying to "place" who the "other voice" in this JT song was. The internet is amazing, I should have thought of it sooner. Haunting, great song....

  • Good memories!!!!! Great Song!!!

  • Who is the bass player on this song? I've seen him before with another band.

  • @CryssLuvsMuzik The Bass player's name is Lee Sklar. He's one of the best session bass players in the world.

  • @CryssLuvsMuzik - Awesome. Thanks. I knew I had seen him with Steeley Dan before.

  • what's with all the guitar-playing dumbledores!

  • Fantastic, great drinking song. Thanks for posting it. Peace

  • JD Souther... genius!

  • such a moving classy number!

i read that it was about james & j.d.'s friend,

a well-loved hollywood rock wife who descended into paranoid coke addiction and social humiliation/ ostracization

after her husband publicly left her first for mackenzie phillips

& then for carole king's underage daughter.

    good times!

  • This song is about the breakup with Carly Simon. Great song, vocal harmony is too good to describe. Love myself some James Taylor specifically and the music of this time period in general . . . the golden days of the singer/songwriters.

  • that was awsome...

  • Amazing vocal performance. Strength of emotion as a result of it's understatement. Absolute ear candy!

  • I had no idea J D Souther co-wrote this song with James Taylor. Love this tune. Great harmony between them.

  • Ah, gee, thanks for posting this.

Not heard often enough, this was a real treat.

My glass is raised to you tonight.

  • Rick Marotta on drums and Waddy not Kootch...

  • @chwalsh01 And Dan Dugmore on the Strat

  • @emjee Waddy Wachtel on acoustic?

  • always wondered who sang the accompanying vocals on this tune.. J.D. Souther? WOW.. his voice is fantastic.

  • That's Ronstadt's band: Grolnick, Waddy, Dan Dugmore. In live stuff you see Danny Kortchmar too who played quite a bit with JT and Jackson Browne. Lee Sklar on bass. Is that Steve Gadd on drums? What a band. And of course JD's harmony is great, none better at close harmony.

  • @dropdowndog Thats actually Rick Marotta on drums

  • @emjee and leland Sklar on bass, that guy has litturally been everywhere with every artist

  • simply beautiful music best harmony ever!!!

  • A masterpiece! Two fantastic artists! Please don't forget JD!

  • Love their EYES! Not to mention all that hair! Love these guys! Thanks for posting! :)

  • Those two voices created a masterpiece in this song.

  • Souther is simply amazing in this song. In my opinion he's got the tougher notes to sing. Not to take anything away from Taylor of course.

  • J. D. Souther rules... so under appreciated.

  • nostalgic but lovely. james taylor is one of the best singer/composer.

  • To My best friend, Delbert Scott !

  • One of the few that has managed to improve his voice as he ages

  • I LOVE THIS SONG !!! JAMES LOOKS GOOD I CAN PLAY IT OVER AND OVER

  • I LOVE THIS SONG !!! JAMES LOOKS GOOD

  • no surprises his singing all very natural perfect harmony together /love it

  • great song, great era for music.Seems i thought in those day's we would always be listening too tunes like this forever

  • I play this song at least once a week. I simply can't get enough of it!!!

  • A couple I know are splitting up publicly on Facebook, reminding me of this song. Sad stuff...

  • It's great to see these two musicians together!

  • great song, and very good vid quality..thank u for posting this!

  • I played with these guys, back ground music to the Green Glow of my Sherwood S9910 Receiver in the middle of the night... singing the 3rd part harmony that didn't bother anyone because no one could hear me. LOL! ;>D God, how I loved (still do) James Taylor & J.D. Souther's music. Here they are together singing on YouTube. Hey, that 3rd harmony part I'm singing tonight still sounds pretty good. Forever young in the Time Machine that this Music Video Transporter is. In a Trance, Trans... Thanks.

  • Great song. I love the simpatico between the lyrics and the music. This song is a prime example of how the music should reflect the mood of the lyrics.

  • This is such a classic and definitely amazing quality for the time it was recorded. Cool that other viewers have recognized other musicians I never would know by their faces, only their music. Thank you, thank you for posting this!

  • awesome quality!

  • fantastic song---brings back so many sad and funny memories. . .

  • And the great Leland Sklar on bass!!! Is that former Eagle Randy Meisner playing rhythm guitar in back.?

  • the "killer" tune

  • Amazing...shittiest thing about this is the amount of views..33 k REALLY?!?

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!

  • That has to be steely dans drummer from Aja..............looks just like him.

  • James and J.D. hit #11 in Billboard, 5-2-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • Always one of my favorite artists. Loved his music back in the day and today.

  • Who's the guy on the giant Gibson acoustic? That dude is slick as snot!!! Must be some studio musician, the ones who play on everything but you never know their name.

  • @itsmovinfast - waddy wachtell...great LA Session guitarist...toured and recorded with james and lots of others...he still is doing it too

  • @itsmovinfast When someone wants a hired gun guitarist to tour or play on a recording session there are a select few. Kootch, Steve Lukather, etc.; & the gentleman with the Gibson, Waddy Wachtel. He's played for everyone from the Cowsills to the Stones. Ever wonder who came up with that 16 beat guitar riff that runs from start to finish in Stevie Nicks' "Edge Of Seventeen?" You are looking at him. He almost always tours with her. He wrote songs with Warren Zevon, etc. A legend in the business.

  • I so did not appreciate these lyrics when the tune was popular (I was like 10 years old) but now the words resonate so dearly ...

  • you may not be into soft rock but I think most vocalists have to respect JD's harmony !! these two made an AWESOME duo !! definately one of my fave soft rock tunes :)

  • @metalvixen1

Absolutely. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and JD. And Jackson Browne.

    Love this Tequila Sunrise sound.

  • @Weenybean Bonnie Raitt was in there too

  • @jrmrinaz

How could i forget - I'm blowin' away...

And Karla Bonoff and Linda Ronstadt.

    This could go on forever.!

  • The americans and their beautiful songs.

  • @brazilianofcourse I thought that was James Taylor / Christopher Cross.

  • This was the time when music was great.

  • Doesn't get any better than this.

  • Lee Sklar on bass. Looks like Don Grolnik on keyboards and definitely Waddy on acoustic. I believe it's Danny Dugmore on electric lead guitar..These same musicians backed Ronstadt on lots of records-Peter Asher produced most of those and liked these people (for what should be pretty obvious reasons).

  • Lee Sklar on bass. Looks like Don Grolnik on keyboards and definitely Waddy on acoustic. I believe it's Danny Dugmore on electric lead guitar..

  • Lee Sklar on bass.

  • Great memories! Looks like Klaus Voorman on Bass and Waddy Wachtel on acoustic?

  • Very cathargic

  • Beautiful boys have grown older along with me, but the harmonies and voices are timeless. Thanks for posting.

  • いつ聴いても、心に染みるわ

  • IMO he's always had an adorable face :) Doesn't get thought of in that way, though...

  • He (J.T.) was really handsome here!

  • I keep an open ear but no one can do it like this any more. So grateful that a model was left for new talent to follow.

  • One of the best songs James Taylor and J D Souther ever recorded.... Thanks for posting.

  • bettygose

Esta cancion es una muestra de la genialidad de James Taylor y las armonias

de voces con JDavid Souther son preciosas, gracias por esto.

  • Lady gaga has a million friends and this song only has 20 thousand views...what the F*** is wrong with people these days!!??

  • Somebody still loves this song so much too..

  • Easily one of the best song I have ever heard. I love this song. Thank you for reposting. And I am also very glad to see that there are others acknowledging and appreciating this piece of great music. This song gives a fair example on how music has changed and dropped in quality over the years, where the big companies and industries only think about money and not with their hearts.

  • real music

  • Every move in my divorce (24 yrs ago) was documented in the local newspaper because of my husband's family...I was 1800 miles from my home & family. This song was so close to my situation at the time that I would have to pull over when it came on the radio. It let me know that I wasn't alone. Great song, thanks for posting it!!!

  • it don`t get much better than this now does it?

  • awesome post awesome song

  • im 24 and you better believe im jealous of you older bastards that got to see this magical musician evolve into one of the greatest of all time...LONG LIVE JT..ill make sure i do my part and show my son this music.

  • @Mulletman0513 Sounds good to me. It's one of the best things my parents ever did for me was to introduce me to the music of their time....60s and 70s. What a gift!

  • @bangitslo That would've been a good concert. I remember being a happy little kid back in the '70s and a confused adolescent in the Reagan years. JT is part of my childhood memories listening to WHB AM radio in Kansas City circa 1975, before John Lennon got shot and the pope got shot, my parents divorced, etc.. Not a fan of 80s pop music at all.

  • @mikedonn71 --sorry about your parent's divorce, bro. That experience is so hard on any child. Guys like Kurt Cobain and Trent Reznor made such angry music in response to the childhood trauma of divorce. So sorry for the scars it caused you. I hope you find happiness in your future.

  • This song brings back memories.

  • Today while tidying up i found my dad's old James Taylor cd, i remembered him playing it for me when i was around 3 or 4 but couldn't actually remember any songs....or so i thought. I managed to sing my way through all 16 tracks, falling more in love with his voice, the music and the words after each song. You can't help but sit back, relax and smile when you hear James Taylor :D

  • James Taylor's music is so brilliant and this song is so powerfull...Beautiful lyrics!!!

They both are incredible singers in this video. One of the BEST song's EVER!!!!!

  • you know it's a song anyone could love whether married, single or divorced. Yet, being divorced the song hits home hard. It's beautiful, & I want to tear up.

  • This song has become my life's theme song

  • JD looks like he had some hash prior to recording!!! lol

  • Such a great song with such beautiful vocals. Loved this song since I was a small kid. I only appreciate it more now that I'm older.

  • Great song...adoro!

  • I saw James taylor in concert in Paris in 1981 during "dad loves his work" tour. What a magnificent moment. I love this man !

  • Thanks for re-posting.

YouTube is an emptier place without it.

  • The quality on this video is so much better than the previous one. Great song!

  • Another great song from 1981,that's when they made real music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for the posting

  • the only song taylor did that i ever liked

    just saying

  • Such a classic song

  • Such a classic song

  • Thanks Dad for introducing me to great music such as this

  • i think the same too

  • HAHAHA when they say someone said someone said i always laugh hahahahaha :D

  • music that makes you forget all the shit that happens in this world,

  • @50ZAPPER brings a person back to a better place ad time.

  • how the hell does this video only have 4 thousand views...it amazes me that art like this is pushed aside for songs like"Black and Yellow"....disgraced with my generation and their idea of good music.

  • @Mulletman0513 It was just recently reposted for some reason. So that's the reason for so few views.

  • I am glad this was reposted. Another one was removed a while ago, with no explanation.

  • I love this song so much!

  • the american sound of the late 70s and early 80s( soft rock at its best)......real talent =real music 4:17 the best....

  • Simply...BRILLIANT!!!

  • This sounds strangely like the Eagles, which makes sense I guess with JD Souther in the band. James Taylor looked different with hair. What a great tune. Usually I like heavy metal, but this is just fine.

  • @mikedonn71 Ha - "James Taylor looked different with hair" - Everytime I see him now I say James Taylor looks so different WITHOUT hair. He's starting to LOSE his hair here actually. I remember seeing him in concert at Widener College in Chester, Pa. He had long shoulder length hair and a mustache. Boy those were the days!.

  • 0:07- I haven't seen Howard Stern looking so good in quite a while.

  • Excellent!

  • just love this song - thanks for posting

  • Chilling memories of a childhood divorce somehow seem less sad and painful now, when hearing beautiful this song again. With children of my own that are at the same age when my parents left each other, I see that it wasn't so bad, as long as, as J.T. says in the final lyrics "somebody still loves you."
