People getting into detail about this score and how it is better than Zimmer's Inception score are about as foolish as those in the South Park Episode about The Catcher in the Rye... just another word of thought ;)
I cannot believe this simple piano tune beat out the legendary Hans Zimmer. The Inception Soundtrack was MIND BLOWING. This actually frustrates the shit out of me.
to make a soundtrack for a film like social network and make you catch up in each and every moment of the movie is truly amazing.without the soundtrack i don think this movie would have been an emotionally gripping or highly entertaining.inception was epic no doubt but take Hans dark night's soundtrack and play it for inception it will still be epic! no diff for a thriller /action film.but u cant do the same for social network, personally i think the Oscars made the right decision.
I think this got awarded best film music as while the film displays the demand for material wealth in the world today. The minimalist music brings you back down to earth. It makes you realise that for all the things mark zuckerburg has he doesnt have 2 of the things that make life so enjoyable. True friendship and love.
@tiredofassholes1 Complexity of music does not equal greatness. The simplicity and haunting sound of this, in mine and apparently the academy's opinion, reflects the film in a way that makes it more poignant that Hans Zimmer's piece for "Inception".
@tiredofassholes1 you do not understand the genius of this song. a fully orchestrated composition of "epic" proportions does not necessarily triumph over musical simplicity.
I loved Inception's score. I'm also a huge fan of the works of Trent Reznor. Inception's score was great, but it's nothing new. Instrumentally and structurally, The Social Network's soundtrack blows Inception out of the water. It may not be epic, but the movie wasn't designed to be epic.
@tiredofassholes1 hey dude, if playing those three notes is so easy, how come you havent done it already? also take a look at the genius behind the film. a D note is sustained throughout the entire film in both music and white noise. check yourself dude.
This won because it fit best with the movie, not because it was more epic-sounding than Inception's soundtrack. Also, this sounds better on its own than any of Zimmer's impressive if generic works.
I am a huge fan of Hans Zimmer. Let me tell you his song in Inception was AMAZING AND PROFOUND. However...Trent Reznor created a masterpiece that shook the core of your soul. He provided a song that was so related to teh scene you can FEEL the state of BETRAYAL and REVENGE
I bought both films and both soundtracks. I have to say The Social Network is my favorite out of the two. I don't think it mattered about how "epic" sounding something was, pieces like this definitely spoke "human" to me.
I dont understand how this is was awarded best film music over inception. No offence to anyone, but hans zimmers masterworks (including inception) make this sound unworthy to be in a film.
@TheRagingNerds Hans Zimmer has already won multiple Oscars. He won't win another for several years. He will continue to be nominated every year, though, just like John Williams was for a decade or so.
Also, the Academy looks not only at the emotional power of the music, but also its CONTRIBUTION to the art of film. Thus, this score (being very minimalist and ambient) is considered by some to be a greater ACHIEVEMENT with what can be done in film music.
@KeyboardMaestro1 Inception theme was a mighty (if mimamilist itself) achivment! Without it the film would have lost alot of scale and 'epicness'. This theme did nothing to me, not a tear to the eye, or the racing of my heart (like inception) therfore, I belive that it is an apt contribution to the art of film, as I have never heard anything quite like it before.
@Winduct I had to look it up to be sure. But you're right, he's been nominated almost every year for 15 years, but his only WIN was for Lion KIng. I thought he snagged one for Black Hawk Down as well. Now that I know that, I'm a little frustrated that the guy HASN'T won multiple oscars.
Maybe he'll share one with James Newton Howard for Batman next year.
@KeyboardMaestro1 AND this was completely ripped off from James in the Giant Peach... dont believe me? Look it up ;) My naaaame is jaaaammmess... thats what moooother callled meee ;)
@dekuscrubbyfan888 Oh yea thats right, I forgot entertaining movies had to be based on a boring-unimaginative subject matter ;) This movie actually kind of sucked to be honest... oh and didn't I mention the score from this was stolen from a kids movie? ;)
@dekuscrubbyfan888 Yet has no relation to my point in the first place. Whether you like it or not, this score is a complete plagiarism off a kid's film. I do not care that you and Nastalgia Critic hate it; the score from Social Network is stolen. If you can not hear it or are to ignorant to admit it, then quit trying to change the subject ;)
@dekuscrubbyfan888 Repeat: James and the Giant Peach/ My Name is James... sticks out just like John William's Jaws Theme in the classic piece Dvorak's No. 9 New World Symphony ;)
@KeyboardMaestro1 "Hans Zimmer has already won multiple Oscars. He won't win another for several years. " Does that mean you can only win so many in a certain period of time?
I was actually wrong about Zimmer winning multiple Oscars. My argument collapses without that part. But the idea I was trying to convey was that awards shows rarely give the same award to the same person twice. Scorsese only has 1 Oscar, which he didn't get until The Departed.
My point is that the Oscars are stingy with established talents. Everyone knows that Hans Zimmer is a great composer. That's why he won't win for awhile. Until he does a WWII film, that is.
@TheRagingNerds The Academy doesn't have any credibility as far as the Best Original Score category is concerned. In 1993, The Last Of The Mohicans by Trevor Jones/Randy Edelman as well as Conquest Of Paradise by Vangelis weren't even nominated! (Aladdin won that year btw, lol).
I don't know what kind of people decide about the nominations and the winners, but I guess they're not musicians and they don't know a lot about music in general.
@metalrules13 Agreed, but they chose correctly when The Lord of the RIngs won... and thats a fantasy film, and fantasy films are renowened for failing at the Oscars...
@TheRagingNerds Yeah, The Lord of the Rings was one of the extremely few epic/fantasy type films that were recognized by the Academy in various categories. I'm not sure about the reason, probably because of the popularity and reputation of the books.
@TheRagingNerds Yeah, The Lord of the Rings was one of the extremely few epic/fantasy type films that were recognized by the Academy in various categories. I'm not sure about the reason, probably because of the popularity and reputation of the books.
@TheRagingNerds I have to disagree. The score is different and unlike what has been done before. It doesn't have the conventional orchestral or a catchy tune to gain commercial appeal. And the music was used so creatively to couple with the film.
To be honest, i didn't think Inception's score was all that great. Just like the movie, I thought it was overrated.
@TheHoleBag Strange, Inception(in my, and many others opinions)has one of the best soundtracks I have heard, and I would not rebuke that statement if all but tracks 3 & 12 were removed. However, those are the 'main' tracks, and without them, it would not be AS good. But honestly, all in all, Hans Zimmer has made so much, and recived so little, I think it is madness how this was rewarded for almost nothing, and Zimmer has been making music amazing for years, but has gotten one Oscar.
@TheRagingNerds Personally I think How to Train Your Dragon should have won. John Powell's use of leitmotif, tin whistle, bagpipes and fiddle was integrated beautifully with a distinct Nordic/Celtic folk sound complimented the film so well. I think that the reason it didn't win is because Americans think animation a cash cow strictly for children. Not enough people appreciate it as the art form it rightly is. Inception be my second choice as the winner, the music was fantastic.
this piece makes my heart ache and love at the same time. There is something so beautiful about how simple it is. I am so glad that youve put the piano version on youtube...it is better than the version in the movie. I have been playing this for the past week on repeat!
