I completely agree with Zidane's reasoning, there cannot just be punishments for actions, which there ofcourse needs to be, both players involved in a confrontation should be punished equally. I don't mean hard tackles and such which occur over several incidents where a player might be provoked, go away and stew over it and then react. Solely one moment incidents where there is a provocation and an immediate reaction. It gets difficult to prove what the provocation was though.

I completely agree with Zidane's reasoning, there cannot just be punishments for actions, which there ofcourse needs to be, both players involved in a confrontation should be punished equally. I don't mean hard tackles and such which occur over several incidents where a player might be provoked, go away and stew over it and then react. Solely one moment incidents where there is a provocation and an immediate reaction. It gets difficult to prove what the provocation was though.

Materazzi was a complete disgrace for what he said, yes, but just because there are a few who do, doesn't mean that everyone in Italy does. I understand why Zidane did it, and yes, i have a certain amount of respect for him, but the man was an idiot not to rise above Materazzi's petty insults.

i am from italy, i wasent really into football when i was watching the 2006 final but i watched it anyway at first i thought that it was just zidane being violent and materrazzi innocent, but after 2 or 3 years i really got into football and after i investigated the reason why zidane headbutted him i was schocked and even though i was schoked i still thought this was a gesture of honor from zidane and materazzi was the real coward who dosent deserve to speak to a player like zidane like that!!

The ref given it penalty. 1-0. Later italy equalised. 1-1. Then that head butt stuff. Then penalty shoot out,. Italy won it.
