@AwokenVillian Not to be offensive, but Carnifex is probably the pinacle of generic Deathcore. How about the Faceless, I Declare War, Despised Icon. All have there own sound, but not necessarily what you'd like. But the word "generic" is thrown around a lot on the boards of youtube. Without anyone actually knowing what it mean, generic doesn't mean I don't like it, it means it's doesn't have it's own identity, it's own colour or flavour. Pretty much the Tofu of Metal.

Is it just me or on almost every album does it feel like they are lacking more low end in their mix? its like all midrange and treble... I just feel their music would kick so much more ass with some bass in the damn mix more so with the drums..I can crank this up and hardly hear the drums on my subs...I just think they always have a shyt drum mix and its a shame...cuz this shyt should rumble like thunder!

I saw them last year in Sydney. They were supporting Arch Enemy. They sounded so good live. Pierced from within was the best in their set, it made the crowd go fucking nuts! I was almost crushed and I got elbowed in the face, but it was worth it for the second row.
Like, it doesnt sound bad at all music wise, but maybe if the sound quality were a little bit better? I know this is supposed to have a more raw sound, but I'm sayin I like to hear every note they play

@maggotfrom1993 "breakdowns" have been around a lot longer than Pantera and Metallica... the term wasn't being used, but they existed. a "breakdown" is just a slow measure/riff with emphasis on the down-beat.
@Necr0Cys2topsY hmmmm I am not sure if it was Dying Fetus per se....Suffocation was doing it too around the same time. In any case, the point remains the same. Deathcore isn't original in any sense.
@rockprogmetal 2 others are old cryptopsy and dying fetus, then any other band doing a breakdown is usually also using pig squeals and really bad guttural vocals and only play one note the whole song....suffocation rules
@redl3ss I've been listening to dm since about 95 (around when Pierced from Within came out). I don't think the term "breakdown" was in use. Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding etc. were all "New York style death metal", and I only remember "slam" or "groove" referring to the slower moshish parts of the song.
[I've got a theory that Suffocation vids now get all these comments from metalcore types since it's listed as an "influence" on wikipedia's metalcore entry. Coincidence?]
@youHaveNoChance metal bands didnt use breakdown as a term becuz it was associated with rap which became very pop in the 90's hitting its peak. Deathcore bands mostly suck do 2 the fact they stuck themselves in a repetitive hole, metalcore is a very specific genre whihc barely doesnt make it a genre, u have only the one guitar style and most bands cant do anything with it. most metalcore fans dont like Suffocation regardless although it shares alot.

The main inspiration of TRUE deathcore at it's worst so far. Good band but his voice has a soft come back and is less harsh. Awesome drumming and mediocre vocals not bad but compared to this dudes early stuff it isnt so great.
@Ichee12 I have their 2006 album and this album too, Suffocation is kind of boring and generic sounding. Bands like Nile and Behemoth are unique and have more of an original sound. I also think that 9 out of 10 metalheads would agree that nile and behemoth are above suffocation.
Got me there too man, Blood oath was a huge disappointment in my opinion. They got too technical imo, most of the songs sound too chromatic. Not to say the band is done for, but this release is def a step backward.
Suffocation is a classic death metal band making incredibly brutal and entertaining music in 2009. Combining elements of brutality and speaker shredding hooks, Suffocation stakes their claim in the hierarchy of classic Death Metal bands STILL kicking ass. I dare say these guys have a slight edge on Cannibal Corpse, even though Corpse is also a great band. Suffocation has been creating excellence for their entire career. Great song.
Shit, I'm not used to the slower-paced American death metal anymore these days. After withstanding the onslaughts of Decapitated, Behemoth, Krisiun, Akercocke, Cryptopsy, Bloodbath, and Vader, It's sounds like a completely different world. Oh well, still top notch material. Not to mention that Deicide, Vital Remains, and Immolation are all american presents to brutally fast death metal as well haha.
It's a 4 year old name, for fuck sakes! My taste in music was not always this impeccable. And yes, Nile is one of the greats as well, of course. UNASSSS THE SLAYER OF THE GODS!
Really the only bands that even compare to Suffo's first two albums from that list are Vader and mayve Krisiun. Even then everything on Effigy makes Krisiun look really fucking tame. Immolation are another thing entirely, and Vader were too thrashy back in their prime. Not to say "Litany" doesn't kick my ass, but I think Suffocation is as brutal as it gets. Let's not get started on br00tal death metal or slam..

If you asked Barnes to sing a newer CC song he couldnt do it, Shit be probably couldnt do a Suffocation song. Ill give to Chris for bein a damn crazy lyricist. Paul May not do what Mike does, thats for sure, but ill give it to Paul that his style of drumming is more distinct. Mike has speed. Paul has individuality

Is it just me or on almost every album does it feel like they are lacking more low end in their mix? its like all midrange and treble... I just feel their music would kick so much more ass with some bass in the damn mix more so with the drums..I can crank this up and hardly hear the drums on my subs...I just think they always have a shyt drum mix and its a shame...cuz this shyt should rumble like thunder!

I saw them last year in Sydney. They were supporting Arch Enemy. They sounded so good live. Pierced from within was the best in their set, it made the crowd go fucking nuts! I was almost crushed and I got elbowed in the face, but it was worth it for the second row.

@redl3ss I've been listening to dm since about 95 (around when Pierced from Within came out). I don't think the term "breakdown" was in use. Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding etc. were all "New York style death metal", and I only remember "slam" or "groove" referring to the slower moshish parts of the song.
[I've got a theory that Suffocation vids now get all these comments from metalcore types since it's listed as an "influence" on wikipedia's metalcore entry. Coincidence?]

Deathcore bands mostly suck do 2 the fact they stuck themselves in a repetitive hole, metalcore is a very specific genre whihc barely doesnt make it a genre, u have only the one guitar style and most bands cant do anything with it. most metalcore fans dont like Suffocation regardless although it shares alot.

Got me there too man, Blood oath was a huge disappointment in my opinion. They got too technical imo, most of the songs sound too chromatic. Not to say the band is done for, but this release is def a step backward.

Suffocation is a classic death metal band making incredibly brutal and entertaining music in 2009. Combining elements of brutality and speaker shredding hooks, Suffocation stakes their claim in the hierarchy of classic Death Metal bands STILL kicking ass. I dare say these guys have a slight edge on Cannibal Corpse, even though Corpse is also a great band. Suffocation has been creating excellence for their entire career. Great song.

Shit, I'm not used to the slower-paced American death metal anymore these days. After withstanding the onslaughts of Decapitated, Behemoth, Krisiun, Akercocke, Cryptopsy, Bloodbath, and Vader, It's sounds like a completely different world. Oh well, still top notch material. Not to mention that Deicide, Vital Remains, and Immolation are all american presents to brutally fast death metal as well haha.

Really the only bands that even compare to Suffo's first two albums from that list are Vader and mayve Krisiun. Even then everything on Effigy makes Krisiun look really fucking tame. Immolation are another thing entirely, and Vader were too thrashy back in their prime. Not to say "Litany" doesn't kick my ass, but I think Suffocation is as brutal as it gets. Let's not get started on br00tal death metal or slam..
