I remember these ads. But Jesus Christ, no wonder my folks never bought me one, £269.99 in 1993 is equivalent to £428.93 according to the Bank Of England inflation calculator!!! Plus the cost of a Mega Drive at £190 in 1990, which is now £336.80! And if you got the 32x (which again, I didn't) at £169.99 in 1994, thats £263.70 today. A whopping £1029.43 over 4 years for a console in todays money!! I wonder why the CD and 32x failed to catch on??
Sega CD was a rape. Current games systems never costed as muchas the sega CD. It only had a few good games. The rest was a bunch of junk made by difital pictures and Sony. Such as Double Switch and Night Trap and so on. OOH, you can toggle between low resolution full motion video. It's crap.
And I've just remembered... I paid £60 for Microcosm in 1993. It's probably the worst game I've ever played in my life. According to an inflation calculator, that'd be like paying £85 in todays money... For a single game! O_o You can almsot get a CONSOLE for that now!
There where a handful of very good games on the Mega CD, such as Sonic CD, an Arcade port of Final Fight, and a cool version of Earthworm Jim with extended and extra levels. But there where also some truly awful games as well, mostly the video ones where you basically just made one move at a time to a horribly grainy picture. There where also too many ports of Mega Drive games just with CD quality music thrown in. Not really worth an extra £250 when you've already paid £150 for the Mega Drive.
I honestly don't get why they even released this. Video game consoles interact with TV, but nobody wants to literally interact with bullshit like that. What were they THINKING?
Which is a whopping £384.55 in today's money according to an inflation calculator. Which is on top of the price of the Megadrive itself, how much were they at the time? Maybe the PS3 isn't such a ripoff after all...
@FatAgnes guess they thought everybody would be sucked in by the fmv, sega will always have a part in my life but the way they managed there business was a shocker
Pretty funny the amount of crap sega released- the 32x console... i remember hearing it mentioned at school. They released Virtua Fighter 2 on the 32x, and it was like 16 MB graphics. Why would yu buy that when you could have it in 3D on the Saturn?
heh. i didnt know VF2 was released on the 32X. i got the MD version on the PSP version of Mega Drive Collection (Although my copy is USA, so its Genesis Collection)
Oh yes, £270. I remember taking out a whole new credit agreement to get that bugger, then again a few years later for the 32X
And now you can get them all for free on coolrom - damn you, technological advancements!
