One of the few fast food places that used quality bread for their buns; not the damp, mushy, flavorless bread that places like McDonald's or Burger King uses.
Roy's was my first job. Sundays would be killer! Solo in the back frying chicken, making biscuits, mashed potatoes gravy, taking out the trash, handling a truck delivery of chicken & what I hated most, cleaning the deep friers. All for $4.50 an hour!
I worked at a Roy Rogers when this commercial aired!! I made some great friends who I'm still very close to today............I'm a Godfather to one's son, as a matter of fact!! $3.35 an hour but great memories!!!
i've only seen them on the NJ turnpike now, everything went downhill on their menu but again, maybe its just the turnpike prep. The roast beef used to be the bomb, but the last time i went it was tough jackass meat. I still love their bbq sauce at the fixin's bar. RIP Double R Buger...we need it back!
@fastnoypi - One of my co-workers recently went to the one in the Grover Cleveland Rest Stop on the Turnpike when he was driving home from LaGuardia about 2 months ago...he got the chicken tenders and he said they never lost their appeal...
@AllisonTheSNLGuru ..your co-worker might be lucky guy. Perhaps that stop was one of the better ones. I've had the same bad experiences at Molly Pitcher, Walt whitman and the Richard Stockton stops. The very last time i was at the Walt Whitman stop, 5 kids in line ahead of me were already complaining that the fried chicken was cold under the lamps, so the employee nuked them again till warmed up.
@fastnoypi - Yes, he was very lucky. He was happy with it, in fact, he took some of it home and nuked it at work the next day. Sounds like all the ones you hit are in the southern part of the state. I've never heard of the Richard Stockton stop, but I did go to the college.
@AllisonTheSNLGuru Something to keep in mind: if you live locally the thing you have to remember are these are service station based restaurants therefore you want to go during peak hours where there is a fast turnover of food. For example, the GC Roy Rogers (service entrance) is located near a school so a lot of teachers head there on their lunch breaks so that is when I usually try to stop in as well. Burgers are always juicy and fried chicken always hot.
Every one of the NYS Thruway RRs have the Double R on the menu. They have to make it for you, which takes less than 5 minutes, but they have it. And it tastes just as good as I remember. That & the Gold Rush Chicken sandwich are my favorites. I also like their fried chicken & biscuits. The Fixin's Bar and BBQ & horseradish sauces kick ass. My brother told me the one in I-95 in MA also makes the Double R if you ask for it. I didn't know that last time I was up there.
Awsome fried chicken and kick ass roast beef...(not to mention putting 2lbs of condiments on from the infamous "Roy's fixin bar") Really miss the days where these joints where everywhere.
@jonnnyclear - Hey, for $2.99...what a taste! Hehe!!
One of my co-workers at the non-profit I work for stopped at Roy Rogers on the NJ Turnpike at a rest stop (I think it was the Grover Cleveland Rest Stop) late at night on his way home from LaGuardia International Airport last week. I was SOOOOOO jealous...he told me he loves Roy Rogers, even though he's a vegetarian, he gives in to temptation once in a while! And why not? :-)
@TeslaDRay - Yup, there used to be a Roy Rogers out by where I used to work here in South Jersey, but the building is not even a restaurant anymore, to the best of my knowledge. But yes, most of them are Wendy's!
My local mall had a Roy Rogers resturant. It disappeared, along with several other classic stores, around 1994. Total Candy, another place at the mall that's long gone, introduced me to Hershey's Ice Cream.
@jakestooge34 I had a Roy Rogers in the Plymouth Meeting Mall and one in Montgomery Mall. I missed them very much...especially those Bacon Cheeseburgers. They were good.
I grew up in Delaware during the 80s and Roy Rogers, in retrospect, was awesome in taste. The boxes were distinctive too. The burgers were always tasty, with just the right combo of grease and salt in the beef. I read that the last Delaware Roy Rogers was razed in the autumn of 2009 at the I-95 plaza. Too bad. My mom took me the one off 141 next to Kiddie City/Sears/ JCPenny (but all that is changed by now) Nostalgia, it's a bitter sweet pill.
Yes, when I went back to Delaware to visit for Xmas, I would always go to the I-95 plaza. I oddly thought such a concept was neat for travel compared to your typcial nasty, dull rest stop or small town with nothing in it when traveling. The I-95 plaza used to have Popeye's too. But they supposedly level the whole plaza to rebuild it and update it. Sadly, wikipedia says the plaza will have Burger King (barf) now instead of Roy Rogers.

Besides the bacon cheeseburger goodness, surprisingly, the soft bun was the surprise deliciousness.

I remember the one at the plaza on I-95! Greatest hub when you're getting close to the Beltway!
My great-grandma (who died in 1994) was a Roy Rogers fanatic and one of my cousins used to take her there (I think my mom did too!) way back when!
I live just north of you, at the Jersey shore!

What a GREAT video! ROY ROGERS is the best fast food ever! Sick of McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy's/Hardees... We need more variety! WHAT A TASTE!

I ate at Roy Rogers a long time ago - it was good. I eat at a smaller chain called Five Guys, which is fantastic.
My mom said my great-grandmother LOVED Roy Rogers when she was still alive.
