  • "everyone" has been to the Casino, wish I did, just about made it to the 100 club in Oxford St 1983, still love the sounds even if I am a Londoner KTF

  • Listen Wigans Ovation, worked in the Wigan Casino, they were part of the Wigan scene, they didn't just appear, like any other band they went after stardom, good on them, seems you have a chip on your shoulder about ''Londoners'' tough, the Northern Soul scene never revolved around you, I bet you danced to this at the Casino, lol!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lead singer is Newcastle Utd's center half !!

  • At the time this was cutting edge!

Wonder what they are doing now?..................

  • Smut...

  • carp

  • I did buy this version but still prefer the original by The Invitations, decent job though I thought.

  • @Wiganmaher YOU BETTER GET YOUR ARSE ON READY IN KING ST ,YOU HAVE PROBABLY HAD YOUR ARSE OUT ON KING ST MANY A TIME ,TWO OF THE BAND WERE FROM WIGAN AND TWO FROM BOLTON . ,WHO GIVES A SHIT WHAT YOU THINK , YOU PROBABLY NEVER WENT ANYWHERE NEAR THE CASINO ANYWAY .

  • not many great northern soul songs made it into the charts ,but this did with a bang....so good to hear it again.

  • sooooooooooooooooooooooooo shittttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • Fucking Hell. Remind me never to go to Wigan. What a load of shite.

  • There is a northern expression; 'Too fucking daft to laugh at' - and this is just that!!

  • @Wiganmaher Absolutely peerfecet comment..... everything you say is so true and guys like us - ie real soul fans, from the north, of a certain age (!!) etc etc etc always hated this lot. They are funny though and always good to take the **** out of. Keep the faith mate !

  • This is taking the piss

  • I was having a real good romp down memory lane listening to all the great tunes, then this, like taking 10 bards what a come down lol, unforgiveable.

  • how bad is this wot a cheesy verstion of a northen soul classic y ow y did they do it

  • I Love it!!!!!

  • wiganmaher and krakenwave agrre with ur posts, this is proper shite and whoever put this on knows fuck all about northern soul.also what the fuck does fat bastard steve wright know about ANYTHING never mind our music! russ prob put it up to keep in the limelight the sad fat cunt!!

  • Load of crap, and it looks like the drummer is a beer swilling darts player.

    Give me strength.....please.

  • You should be ashamed of yourself putting this utter kak on here. Its this/Joker/Footsee ets that killed Wigan. Breadheads like Winstanley and Walker cashing in. Bastards, Ill never forgive them.

  • @PhotoshopBus absolutely right on mate !

  • @Wiganmaher Hahaha! Hit the nail on the head there mate :-)

  • This still sounds great, brings back memories of this group appearing at the Corn Exchange..

  • Comment removed

  • Ok, this is crap, but when I was a younng mod in the early 8Ts this was a latenight favourite in our local mod do - though we didn`t take it to serious. Simply brings back good memories!! Some people should cool down instead of annoying about little things than this song!

  • singer and drummer are from Bolton, the other 2 are from Wigan. anothe band that did this song was Wigans Chosen Few with Russ Winstanley playing drums, Russ was DJ at the casino

  • CRAP

  • Maybe this video post should be removed for the sake of the good name of Northern. Thanks for posting mate but please take it down, it's awful.

  • lucky you didnt bump into them inside, they all need locking up

  • I was in prison, one of the cool guys from the northern scene one day - the laughing stock the next! .................. neither prison or the embarrassment of these pratts ruined my life - but the latter was the most humiliating.

  • @adrewsona your lucky you never bumbed into them inside, these cunts should have been locked up years ago

  • Comment removed

  • i rember us all waiting to hear this on the telly, the night it was aired

oh how we laughed, utter crap

    ktf

  • total shit

  • @krakenwave Oh aye, Steve Wright. From Reading. Lot of Northern Soul on the M4 corridor is there??? It's still alive and kicking round here. Keep listening down there Krakenwave. You do us proud. Keep the faith

  • This makes me very angry, it has NOTHING to do with soul music whatsoever

  • Got to say that the song and the band is -- what's the British slang word i'm looking for?? -- NAFF

  • this is crap not northern soul

  • I can remember when this was No1, I caught the Wigan bus from Bolton to see my girlfriend who lived on the route at Lostock. As i got upstars the lead singer was sat near the front of the bus. then a few days later he was at my cousins wedding. Thank christ he didnt sing

    Good memories tho

  • i havent heard this for 25yrs .....le beat rout 85

  • Guaranteed to get Northern Soul fans spitting fire.........I think Steve Wright saying "proper Northern Soul" at the end didn't help.

Suffice to say, I prefer it by the Invitations.

This does take you back though. Anyone remember the B-side to this called "Northern Soul Dancer" ?

  • I love it - Big Dave

  • Chav-tastic!

  • Look, it doesnt matter where you are from, shit is shit...it cant be disguised, wigan was about fun and dancing and I know alot of shit was played there, but in the early years it was great, and a deep love of good northern soul was the attraction, sadly the shit started being played in an effort to keep it going, and the birth of wigans ovation, a money making "jump on the bandwagon" band formed and the rest isnt history thank goodness, then sunk into oblivion to all northern soul fans relief

  • @jelboysvw Agree with every word mate

  • Great piece of Northern Soul along with Footsee ,good fun and good to dance to, and before you purists start with your bullshit the northcountryman went to Wigan Casino many times from the early to mid seventies it was about fun and dancing

  • @TheNorthcountryman

"... went to Wigan Casino many times from the early to mid seventies it was about fun and dancing..."

    It was indeed...

except that TheNorthcount here was so evidently High Royds/rat-arsed that he never got further than horizontal in the ginnel behind every night he went but for one. That's when Annie Nightingale paid Wigan Ovation's drummer's mum to pick him up, brush him down and take him home for a bet by 30 Valium and a bottle of Warnincks.

    Memories, ay?

  • @krakenwave Northcountry actually " northcountryman" unlike yourself I would surmise

  • @TheNorthcountryman

Your defensiveness about your moniker suggest you get called a count all the time

  • @TheNorthcountryman incorrect actually Kracken head your perception has let you down

  • @krakenwave hahahaha Brilliant comment!! I laughed my socks off..........and yes ..one of THE worst piles of shite that have ever been put on record....How can these guys be proud of this?.....I would be mortified if this was me singing hahahaha

  • Yet another reason real Soul fans deserted Wigan Casino in bloody droves following the Top of the Pops "Dancing to Footsie" debacle too. It wasn't entirely the "London Record company's" fault either. As previously mentioned, the Casino management and DJs shamelessly encouraged the free publicity, and continued to sell the scene out. (If you doubt the accuracy of this statement, read the Soul mags of the time)

  • @drwhatson

Doc, you only have to read any comments that wash over/defend/excuse it to sum the Casino up.

  • @drwhatson @drwhatson Agree 100% been a real Northern fan for years and know exactly where you are coming from. Big secret tho.... even though i know i shouldn't...... i DO actually quite like "Footsie" these days. I think it is because it is out of that context of the silliness of the 70s and also, i guess it is a bit of nostalgia too reminding me of such good times. I bought it years ago for the B side which i think a lot of people did, but i did play the A side when no one was looking !!

  • ha ha, excellent.

  • @krakenwave SPOT ON! 5*****

  • biggest load of crap ever,an insult to the original by the invitations

  • the paches are worth more than anything god we are made to look fools

  • the paches are worth more than anything

  • Check out our new single guys....and we are from Wigan...well..Golborne :) Have a cracking christmas everybody!

  • WANK!!! - fucking divs!

  • im not sure if it was played at wigan i started going 1977 i would think it would have been i never heard it there i just heard crap like joe 90 but saying that there was some brill records first played there cesil washington al williams and many more classics

  • records like this give the scene a bad name how they charted with this ill never know just shows why listen to this when can listen to the invitations and these prob made more money out of it

  • @rickjfair1960 Hup!?!? Was this record actually played at the Casino? In 1975, I was six years old, living in Sweden, so don´t blame me if it was.... This song is extremely embarrassing, how could it happen?????? KTF.

  • NOT NORTHERN SOUL

  • Especially for Wiganmaher

If you knew anything (As your name would suggest) about "Northern Soul" you would know that Wigans Ovation truely came from Wigan, originating in the late 60's as "The Wigan Piers" !!

Great Track , Great voice , Keep the faith!!

  • jesus what absolute crap

  • this is a wigan casino classic

  • @backontrack210 yeah absolute toss

  • this vid takes me back to the youth club im 49 now still remember

  • ha ha i know the singer jim lol now a porter and the royal bolton hospital

  • @suzanneholt29 hahahahahahaha that says it all........tell him from me its rubbish

  • It's a pity u don't have a record cos it's worth lots! lol

  • Jesus!!! Where's the frigging brass???? I can understand the white guys wanting to make something as a homage to Northern Soul but this was a bit of an insult really.

  • (1) I remember it.

    (2) I like it.

...but each to his own, eh?

  • at the end Ah yes proper Northern SOUL???????????? Jesus Christ. Soemone somewhere wanted it to go bigger and went about it totally the wrong way. This is ifrst record stuff hwen you were 13. Does anyone remember them getting booed off at Wigan at all? I think their story goes a little like Creme Brulee in Lge of Gents. They were called Sparkle at one point . Tragic.

  • sing it .skinggggggggggggggggg in da snow lalalalaalalalalalalal

  • shite

  • its not good is it,, ta for postin, but no way is this any good

  • greatest ever boys

  • If you think this is northern soul.....it isnt!

its a very poor rip off by a bunch of losers hoping to make a quick £

  • Sadly, they did. Probaly made more money from this in a couple of weeks than we could earn in a couple of years. No bloody justice...LOL

  • @blagger56 bno they got ripped off big time, was it an establishment attempt to claw in some revenue??

  • thems not girls lol , them are wigan lads !

  • Look at the girls in the front row..........lol

  • i dont ever remember this!! omg! soooo NOT what i was expecting! lol

its pretty awful ...reminds me of ...well, no, it doesnt remind me of anything!

  • It's all a bit 'clubland' isn't it? The pies have arrived and Bingo's about to start in the lounge!

  • @matrixsenior get the greasy pie and mash up!

  • What is this? It is pleasant, but forgetable. It seems misplaced for the time. If I was their manager I would have forced them to wear make up and glitter at gunpoint. Oh, and instead of that tinny tambourine we would have handclaps in the style of the Glitter Band, and stronger song too.

  • what a load old.............gimme the original

    pete from hemel ktf

  • remember the youth club disco

  • fukingggggggggggggggg ace

  • i remember this when first aired on TOTPi nearly fell thru' the floor !! my non-soul mates really took the piss coz they thort we all dressed like that at wigan, just uploaded it to facebook for a damn good laff

  • First time I've seen and heard this since '75! Vapid rubbish, but brings back memories of a mythical Wigan scene which, growing up in the musical toilet that was (probs still is) Plymouth, was totally out of reach. Anybody know where I can get a copy of Footsee? Now THAT was a choon..

  • spotify has it, type in Footsee, it's the original wigan's chosen few track.

  • absolute shite which had nothing whats so ever to do with Northern Soul . When someone says this is Soul let alone Northern Soul it is an insult to all the great people and the great music which built are Scene.

  • lighten up guys..This was back in 1975 for Gods sake and Its a site better than the AWFULL SHIT thats comming out of TV at the moment..IE that Ugly ****BAG from Scotland and Jedsomthing and more..Id rather listen to these Guys any Day.Kind regards music luvvers

  • Seen the Jam live, majic, up the MODS.

  • i dont care if they are white, black or purple, this is just embarrassing. very hokey , corny song. the singer trying to grove on stage is good for a laugh if you put the music on mute. just a horrible song about nothing. hopefully their other songs are much better than this

  • If it wasn't for the alpen horn this record would be rubbish.

  • What you have horns for breakfast. LOL (alpine horn)

  • Well spotted. :)

  • Cheers I just thought it a funny scene, someone sitting down to a bowl of horn shaped breakfast cereals. LOL. Maybe we ought to try it out in Switzerland it may just catch on. LOL

  • It isn't crap because it's white and commercialised.

It's crap because it's a crap song which meanders aimlessly around an instantly forgetable chorus. I used to listen avidly to pop in the 1970s, but I can't recall this at all even though it was a hit.

  • @Drblooter99 Agree. Wow, this is heavy duty shitcrap.... Thanks, but no thanks!

  • I bet they were all 40 years old and wearing wigs in this..

  • prefer the invirtations version lol!!!

  • just because its commercialized and by a white group dosnt make it crap, its a very good dancing 70s northern soul tune

  • "Baggies and poppy sound, on the TV. The Wombles of Wigan Casino are we..." Ha!

  • One of the best (and only) pop "hits" about skiing ever!

  • Oh yes.....POP it is alright!!

  • Its the right place for it TOTP as its pure trash....hahahaha and right at the end steve wright says ah yes proper northern soul hahahaha.......Like the band, Not a fuckin clue.........and all for the love of money hahahahaha.....Tossers

  • I bought this...... what was I doing.

  • dreamin'

  • lol my mucker has some strange taste, saying that, he is an old git ;) but i love him to bits lol

  • the worzels looked better tho

  • one of those songs ive been trying to remember from primary, happy song, googled the lyrics and hey presto, wigans ovation, brilliant

  • great band,i got this in 75

  • bin said b4,but here goes,WOTTAPILEOFKINSHITE,KINRANK

  • TOTALLYAGREEBIGHUGEPILEAPOOP!XX

  • fucking class remember dancing to this when i was 14 at the local youth club love it keep on keeping on

  • beach girls enough said

  • Minibus Anthem!! BWFC away trips!!

  • "Skiing in the snow"? as opposed to what? "Skiing in the mashed potato"?

And when you look at them don't you just think "somewhere, a non league 1970s football team is missing 4 players"?

  • i can think of one to ski on,as opposed to snow dude... water, but it just does'nt fit with the song...so snow it is...

  • Well Im glad you cleared that up, I can get some sleep now

  • brilliant record, my bruv used to do backflips and all sorts to this one lol

  • They werent fuckin soulies, they were put together by Winstanley and Walker to rip some more money from the soulies, they werent happy to sell cheap pressings, 10,00 different badhes after they said they were only going to do a few, and trying to put Cleethorpes to rest by opening the Winter Gardens the greedy bastards! Bread heads tore the scene apart and now they look back with rose tinted shades with this shite!!! Pisses me off it really does!! How is this SOUL let alone Northers???

  • drwhatson..these are original soul boys...wigan patches abound...ain't like Justin Timberlake has covered it..calm down brother..keep on keeping on

  • is English boys doing what they love..Northern soul...nothing wrong with that..at least he has a decent soul voice....

  • SHIT. Pure and simple CRAP. They should have been hung from the nearest lamp post.

  • i hated his record but it still brings back memories, evan if it was a shit northern soul rip off ,

  • GREAT VIDEO. AND MEMORIES OF OH SO HAPPY DAYS....WIGANS OVATION WERE GREAT i RELLY FANCIED HIM YUM YUM

  • Alf the drummer plays in a band with me now, and he's still a cool dude!!!!

  • Yes, I know, I know, The Invitations was by and far the best version. But..........I wish it was 1975 again and we were standing outside the Casino talking about how crap this performance was. This is pure nostalgia, and wasnt the original name of this band "Sparkle"

  • What utter fuckin shit

The Invitations was the ONLY version worth listening to not these Divs

  • im havin a reto perv !!!

  • the lead singer was my first crush.....and i still quite fancy him hahaha ...really !!! wonder what he,s doin now ?

  • go to wigans ovations home page..you can email him

  • Hated it at the time but looking back it is a bit of fun now. Love the nostalgia of it.

Am confused by the nonsense write up by the BEEB on the screen though.

  • well it is a tribute to the business acumen of the organisers, which thankfully failed I think it charted 1000..All the saddos who bought this did you honestly think it was going to increase in value..

  • i see jim mcClusky nearly every week he goes into a club near me called the runworth hall in bolton

they also doa northern soul night the last friday of every month

  • hmm, beach girls versions the best i recon, still shows how popular norv was+ the cashing in/sell out monkeys that exploited it

  • Well we all have our own tastes, and I knew the boys personally, my Dad used to fix their van, and they did put their Heart and Soul into what they did, and we loved them. They made me sick once, they brought us a case of tomatoes, and they were still green, but my brother and I sneaked into the back of the van and ate god knows how many.....not a good idea. Perhaps they had them for all you non likers to throw at them????

  • my mother always played this when i was a kid and i always thoght thay were black? 38 yrs later lol

  • YouTube ban Japanese schoolgirls being spanked.......and allow this.......guess I'll go and watch Mama Mia and pretend it was something to do with The Torch.....

  • excellent remark mate

  • They closed their coal mines dont you know!

  • I thought they did a decent version of this song and did buy it, but it hasn't got the same soulful feeling as the original 1966 version by The Invitations.

  • Awful, def NOT northern soul.

  • oh deamster, how snobby and missing the point. Music shouldn't be compared, only enjoyed. The same people who will only listen to The Invitations version, or Gloria Jones doing tainted Love and missing out on Soft Cell. By that thinking you wouldn't listen to "Money" by the Beatles, only Barratt Strongs version. Music is music is music. I don't think this is too bad at all!

  • Well if that's snobby then I glad to be one. I think you're missing the point. This was a put up job by a group created by record companies to cash in on the Northern scene. Its got about as much to do with Wigan or the Northern scene as The Chicken Song or Aga Do. Yeah music is music, you have your taste and I have mine.

"I don't think this is too bad at all!" Nuff said.

  • I totally agree with you!

God this took me back to my youth..I love it and an not ashamed to admit it!

  • How embarrasing this was and still is. How a pure untainted underground scene became ruined by knobhead record companies tying to jump on the bandwagon. The average Joe Soap actually thought this was Northern Soul. Absolute crap, they should have been hung up by the b-llox
