Thank you for posting this song. But I think your idea that "Jack" in the song refers to JFK is a serious misunderstanding of the history of those times. JFK was long since dead by the time this song and the events that led to it occurred. And I'd even say the cultural forces at work which contributed to Kennnedy's assasination led to the national discontentment which produced Chicago '68. With Occupy, this mood appears resurgent again just in time for the summer 2012 conventions.
it was a police riot. what few film footage came out of it proved that. i remember it well.
as for work - we need jobs that will at least pay the mortgage and living expenses and those complaining about others not having a jobs should STFU and EMPLOY THEM!
theres a few ppl that mention the whole jfk well it dosent matter when the song came out its when the riot was happening, and cudos i hope you got an A on this its just awsome
Tear gas should be banned from police use. The South Korean public got their government to ban it's use. Should the U.S. have as much proctection of it's citizen's right to protest peacefully?
People, here is a way to contribute to the revolution of mind taking place since 15-10-2011: comment on this song by naming a previous revolution in which people themselves decided to take control themselves and which we can take as an example/inspiration for the events now taking place all over the world. -> continued in next comment
@sendanor It will have 2 effects: we will take care that these forgotten revolutions in their own way will be remembered and prevent them from being silenced by certain repressive authorities, and it will trigger people all over the world to think and thereby to contribute/get inspired themselves to act in their own way. Ready? OK, see the following comment for the precise example and start commenting/replying to it: -> continued in next comment
@sendanor Respect for the people massacred on Tiananmen Square, Peking 1989! Their memory will not be forgotten – they inspired me to be the change! OK people, next comment and keep it going on endlessly – your words will inspire things you haven’t even dreamed of! But keep it constructive, no pleas for violence, verbal butchering etc. – show the world we can do it otherwise than the war-like mongering of the old world.
In 1968, JFK "Jack" had already been dead 4 years. Otherwise, this video is cool. Why not just edit out the JFK part. Even the history teacher missed this?
I was just ten years old but I remember that awful day and night...my folks were watching the convention on TV (black and whit, of course)...suddenly a camera shot from outside was shown, and just as plain as day a handful of cops were shown bokting into a crowd of unarmed people, billy clubs swinging...they beat one kid and he punched an officer, then a couple cops commenced to knocking him down and senseless with their clubs...
Commentators at the convention stopped talking and one named Howa
@swoop1111 As of yesterday evening, I am spreading the word for our Dutch co-operations on Twitter and Facebook, friend! THE movement of our times has begun and won't stop!!!
@merlin6945 Hehe....even the south of the Netherlands, in the cities of Heerlen and Maastricht joined the movement...but these cities was 'conveniently' forgotten by most NL media, and only the bigger cities of Utrecht, The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam were mentioned...need I say more??
This was NOT by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young...It was from the solo album Songs For Beginners by Graham Nash. Crosby, Stills and Young had nothing to do with it.

If you think the scenes of the Chicago riot resemble those of a war you've obviously stretched the truth--a lot. And you seem to have overlooked the stories of the so-called 'peaceful' protesters throwing bags of shit and bricks at the police...Chicago was not then and is not now a city that will tolerate that kind of bullshit. Peace may be an ideal, yes. But you get that many people together and stupid shit will happen. The police did their job. They protected my city and they did it well.
*continued* and if you truly did do this project for a history class I hope you didn't get a good grade. You neglected to even mention the context in which this protest took place ( the cold war). There's not really a whole lot of substance to your video just some more bleeding heart "oh no look at that poor guy that got beat up by the police." He's just another asshole and I would bet that a lot of the people who were actually FROM Chicago got away unharmed--you don't fuck with the police here
Great footage in this video of the iconic song by CSNY, it really brings that time period back for me. I remember the 1968 convention, I lived in Chicago and the reality was worse than the footage! My uncle was brutally beaten back then by the cops for holding a sign saying police are pigs! He came home from the police station so badly beaten I will never forget the image! The world has changed so much, people no longer care about the greater good, it's all me me me these days!
Jack Kennedy was dead for 5 years, so I think they mean another "Jack" by the time of the DNC. I know they didnt care for Lyndon, or Hubert. McCarthy was the hero of the protestors, he was the Ron Paul of the 60's!!
ronrizzi is right. JFK was dead by 1968. He was assassinated in 1963 so I doubt very seriously CSNY were referring to him as someone who is turning a deaf ear to the people. He was no longer a player. That's a major faux pas in this video although there's some really good footage here showing how very easily our freedoms can be taken away, despite the jingoism that comes from all those alleged self-proclaimed patriots, who propagandize and accuse those of treason when they don't believe the lie.
@kazywaz Well Put man!!!Articulate and straight to the point and reality. And if only the "yes sir" "i back my leaders 100%! could see how fast that leader can turn this country on its ear into a fascist military state, IF only.Damn " If" is a Big word!!! If only,If we had... etc
@mkervelegan - How right you are....."I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Thomas Jefferson
To the creator of this video: Are you aware that Jack Kennedy was assassinated in November of 1963 and that the events in this song take place during the summer of 1968? Your assertion that Graham Nash was referring to Jack Kennedy when he said, "Don't ask Jack to help you..." is preposterous.
Didn't the Black Panther movement end up becoming the Black P Stones? That's if street history serves me correct? If I'm wrong, I apologize. I was 3 y/o during this and I remember my mom, step dad and his brother were there. I have a few pics from that protest. While I agree, artists are not the same today as they were back then. Except for greenday and U2 who immediately come to mind.
@caucus100 There is still talent in the music of today, it's just that you have to search for it. Commerical stuff that the media spews out will never be good, because it's purely created to prodyuce money which isn't the point of music, it's unfortunate.
At the time I was pretty involved in the antiwar movement and I really thought that Chicago had some significance. Now I look on it as a staged media event organized by the yippies for the most part and intended not to shorten the war but to prolong it by radicalizing the peace movement and thereby killing any chance of influencing the mainstream toward peace. The Yippies and the SDS did more to get Nixon elected than anybody else.
The Black Man That Was Chained And Gagged To The Chair Was Robert George Seale A.K.A Bobby Seale Founder Of The Black Panther Party .. Power To The People !! Im Black And Im Proud Say It Loud !!
@coronfletcherb4 great, your black. I'm Greek, and I'm proud to say it!
just no,. the whole damned racial oppression thing is over. Us greeks were enslaved by the turks for over 400 years, and unlike the blacks, we freed ourselves. The best part is, I don't think the turks owe me anything. Apparently black people still think that whites owe them something.
I recognize this is from 4 years ago, but I also have to say that the students who put this together misinterpreted the meaning of "Jack." Those of us who were alive then see the glaring inaccuracy there. There were other inaccuracies in terms of the details (i.e. picesptah's comment). Otherwise, this would be brilliant.
I recognize this is from 4 years ago, but I also have to say that the students who put this together misinterpreted the meaning of "Jack." Those of us who were alive then see the glaring inaccuracy there. Otherwise, this would be brilliant.
Strange that everyone argues the "Jack" reference and NO ONE points out that the "brother" who is "bound and gagged and chained to a chair" was NOT "Bobby Seale" but, rather, ABBIE HOFFMAN at his trial on charges of inciting a riot. Abbie, the generally accepted leader of the YIPPIES (NOT the "yuppies" which was a bastardization of the former meant to describe affluent young people who "played" at being "hippies") had vigorously objected during the trial, so they gagged and restrained him.
MY FATHER WAS AT WAR WHEN CRAP WAS GOIN ON, HE'S VIETIAM VERTiAN WHOS HEART HAS A VIRIUS NOW, CUZ OF P.O.S WAR. he's dying, I hope people realize what those boys went thought and give give them the up most of respect. I LUV MY FATHER AND ANYBODY WHO HAS SERVED IN COMBAT!!!!!!!!
Jack was Jack S**T these politicians knew nothing except over regulation...Just like they are doing today! Please Change that... Don't know where that came from ..Opps I do know they change history all the time to suit themselves. !!!
Except, President Kennedy was long dead by the of the protests at the Democratic convention. I doubt the lyric "Don't ask Jack to help" was referring to him. But it's still a good video.
I really don't think the line about "don't ask Jack to help you" has anything to do with John Kennedy, especially since he had been dead for nearly 5 years by then! Plus CSN&Y had great affection for Jack Kennedy's brother Bobby, who had just been assassinated in June 1968 (in fact their song "Long Time Gone" was written by Crosby to reflect his anger and hurt over Robert Kennedy's assassination). "Jack" here simply means generic politicians who talk change but do nothing to achieve it.
I really need a time machine....i was born in wrong time, wrong place... Love this song, love this music and those years, so full of poetry and strenght
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.
They always forget to mention the FBI informants who posed as protesters and started the violence...police reacted...just like at Kent State where a known FBI informant fired gunshots with pistol before national guardsman shot back...ahhhh, the days of Nixon/Hoover, not unlike todays teabaggers.
I'm enjoying this in celebration of the free people of Egypt, the late 60's in the USA is the closest I ever came to feeling what they must have been feeling there over the last few weeks, power to the people!
When the kids could call out thru music for perfect righteous reasons, rally with love and get response, later came if you come to San Francisco..............Comon kids.....do like Egypt !
ah yes...the good old days when liberals, hippies and socialists got the shit kicked out of them for their anti american activities, and niggers didnt go west of western avenue on the south side!
You're missing the meaning of "Jack". Jack on the street means that "you" (not you neo) don't know shit! So don't ask "Jack" not John Kennedy but "Jack" as in politicians in general. As also has been repeated "history" toda.y Peace. (:{)
@ronrizzi yup, " Dude you don't know Jack"! or Jack Shit!.In other words if you were buying into the system--- yer a sheep! open your eyes!.Man not to sound like the grey haired hippie, we had passion,we tried at least!
@TheZayne34 So then we agree.... and it's a good thing for gray haired hippies. If there weren't a few left around no one would complain, they would all be watching Jessica Simpson and survivor rather than trying to keep a dream long dormant from the 60's alive....
Graham Nash: "The 'Jack' in my song Chicago is Jack Kennedy. Jack is a term used by many English people as a kind of generic word. Although Kennedy had been dead for years, his spirit lives on."
Everyone points and hisses at the high numbers of police and National Guard Daley brought down on the DNC, citing it as "repressive" or "fascist" But I ask you. How many people died during that riot? That's right.... Goose Eggs ladies and gentleman.
43 years ago people had more intellectual depth because they were not totally atomised from each other by their Chinese electronic toys. Now the government knows there will never be a challenge to anything it initiates, because everyone is so F*@king selfish and unable to see past one's nose...
arent you sitting in front of your Chinese electronic toy right now? 43 years ago people were not surveilled like they are today, and i dont see how protesting with a bunch of flowers, pot and acid is any proof of "intellectual depth" ..and politically motivated music is still around especially in underground hip hop and lyric wise is deeper and more intellectual, this type of music is just kept off the airwaves due to media conglomerates like clear channel
@mkervelegan Well....I can gainsay this statement of pessimism: as of the past week, the 'Occupy' movement has shown worldwide that people are far from asleep and shortsighted!!!!!!!
@sendanor: and I am happy to be brought up short in this sense, pleased but not entirely surprised to note that our western societies are not totally senescent and complacent, especially those of a younger age who will have to sort out all our shite...
I wish people wouldn't tell others what to think... it's so depressing. It is a great song, but the meaning "We can change the world" isn't the whole story until it's backed up. I only know recent Young songs, but like 'Restless Consumer' and 'Be The Rain' - ok, on different topics, but clearly point fingers at how people can bitch and rant all they like, but no one is actually willing to do anything about it. The west is a corrupt capitalism, and we let it go all too willingly.
NeoVisconteo - that's what "symbol" means. Yes, I'm rolling my eyes.
From Graham Nash: 4waysite.com/faq/faqsongs.htm
"The 'Jack' in my song Chicago is Jack Kennedy. Jack is a term used by many English people as a kind of generic word. Although Kennedy had been dead for years, his spirit lives on."
it wasn't about jfk... PAULNIEM is actually right. i hate when people don't get their info right before making a video. make us look bad in chicago for making shit like this
love this song. it shows what true patriotism is, standing up to fight for the ideals that this country was built on, even if that means protesting against it.
i agree bookkeeper57. Graham Nash wasnt singing about JFK. And the song is by Graham from his solo album "songs for beginners" album. ..who joined this group after leaving the Hollies. Its CSNY who no doubt sang it often including a 1968 concert as mentioned. Thanks for sharing the video & Peace.
I love this video. I was an 11 yr. old kid in Chicago at the time and my mom wouldn't let me go downtown to the riots. I couldn't understand why my older sister would'nt go. This song is a classic that should inspire all generations past, present, and future. Play on and be aware....
@mozfreak84........I was 10 years old at the time and I got to watch the whole thing on black & white TV. What are the effects that young people are still feeling from the '60's?
@ Neo.......Jack was a symbol for what might have been. I think it's called alliteration, but I've been out of school a awhile now.. We all knew what they meant, back then, though. That's for sure.........
what the cpd did was unexceptable but as a chicagoan i dont want some english boy like this dude talking shit about us we dont go around writing songs about how corrupt the english govt is.
I wasn't around during the time but as a young person, I have much respect for what young people during that time were trying to accomplish. Today we are still feeling the effects of the counterculture and other phenomena from the era.
The really sad thing....when we grew up what did this generation give us as a leader? George W. Bush.
We can change the world? Did we?
Personally, I'm ashamed that we started out with so much hopeful vision and in the end we didn't turn out much different from the generation we were protesting against.
@shmusiccleaner - You can be an apologist for the Chicago Police all you wish to be, but your observation about the protesters has no validity. The Daley Machine went out of its way to ensure the police would create a violent confrontation, and they manufactured exactly what they hoped for.
great song, but you failed to mention how the protestors threw cocktails of piss and shit at the police officers. i think that sort of behavior warrants mace and billy clubs, but perhaps i'm just a bit sensitive when it comes to having human feces thrown at me. cool footage though.
@zacatetas. Resorting to throwing one's waste as a form of protest or rebellion seems more in line with a monkey caged in a zoo. Not a human being debating politics. Throwing shit at a police officer does not affect a politician. Having intelligence and finding a way to get your message across that garners support, not disgust from the masses, would probably have been a better option.
I think the reference to "Jack" actually refers to the politicians not calling upon his name to help them in their cause. Thinking they could play the JFK card to garner support.
i love chicago. never want to leave!!!

43 years ago people had more intellectual depth because they were not totally atomised from each other by their Chinese electronic toys. Now the government knows there will never be a challenge to anything it initiates, because everyone is so F*@king selfish and unable to see past one's nose...

@mkervelegan
arent you sitting in front of your Chinese electronic toy right now? 43 years ago people were not surveilled like they are today, and i dont see how protesting with a bunch of flowers, pot and acid is any proof of "intellectual depth" ..and politically motivated music is still around especially in underground hip hop and lyric wise is deeper and more intellectual, this type of music is just kept off the airwaves due to media conglomerates like clear channel

The really sad thing....when we grew up what did this generation give us as a leader? George W. Bush.
We can change the world? Did we?
Personally, I'm ashamed that we started out with so much hopeful vision and in the end we didn't turn out much different from the generation we were protesting against.
Steve915 1 year ago
@shmusiccleaner - You can be an apologist for the Chicago Police all you wish to be, but your observation about the protesters has no validity. The Daley Machine went out of its way to ensure the police would create a violent confrontation, and they manufactured exactly what they hoped for.

great song, but you failed to mention how the protestors threw cocktails of piss and shit at the police officers. i think that sort of behavior warrants mace and billy clubs, but perhaps i'm just a bit sensitive when it comes to having human feces thrown at me. cool footage though.
shmusiccleaner 1 year ago
@shmusiccleaner the over reaction of a police state warrants feces and piss cocktails. so the cycle begins
zacatetas 1 year ago
@zacatetas. Resorting to throwing one's waste as a form of protest or rebellion seems more in line with a monkey caged in a zoo. Not a human being debating politics. Throwing shit at a police officer does not affect a politician. Having intelligence and finding a way to get your message across that garners support, not disgust from the masses, would probably have been a better option.
shmusiccleaner 1 year ago
@shmusiccleaner had i been there; politics went out the window the second the police and daley pushed for mass violence
