I will be somewhat speeding along through Riven as it *is* such a long game and I don't need a ten-hour clip of, say, Jungle Island on my laptop taking up tons of space.

As far as your crashing issues, I'd recommend that you find the CD version of Riven in a .torrent file, and run it through DOSBox.
