my grandfather fought against the italians in 1940. they stayed in the mountains, because the italian tanks couldn't climb up. without any vehicles the greeks pulled anti-tank cannons with donkeys and mules up to the top of the mountain. the italians didnt even expect for a cannon to be up there, so when they would slowly come up the mountain "BOOM" there was the cannon.

As a Turk I feel slightly out of place here. However, I do commemorate the brave Greek veterans who fought the Italian Facists and later the German National Socialists in the name of freedom and democracy. Although our 2 nations (Turkey and Greece) have had a bloody history of conflict, I look hopefully on to the future that peace and prosperity can be shared between neighbours, between friends, and between brothers.
Regardless of any historical conflict between Greece and Turkey, the need to unite against fascism is more important. Long live freedom and justice, and death to nazism and oppression.

Hellas' resistance in 1940 is equally glorious and can only be compared with the resistance in Therpopiles in 480 BC. Hellas was the country that achieved the first victory against the superpower of the time and gave hope to the rest of the world that the nazi's are not undefeatable. Admittedly, the Italians were by far the most civilized occupying force and committed no atrocities against civilians, even when their troops were ambushed by guerillas. The same cannot be said about Germans and Bulgarians who butchered thousands of people in reprisals. My grandma, God bless her soul, used to tell me that they didn't starve in 1941-42 because their village in Korinthia was under Italian jurisdiction and they refused to obey German directives for collection of foodstuffs.

Well what you said that all nations have courage, is true. But Italy did have a much better equipped army than greece, and a significantly better air force which helped a lot in Epirus later in the war.
Greece was pretty much unprepared too anyway.
The whole "they fought bravely" thing is because they did fight bravely like others did but they were ill equipped and in a worse spot and despite the odds they were able to repel a better army and even march in their soil.
Greeks are great warriors , Spartans ,Macedonians , Byzantines all Greek and all great warriors in WWII no exception is pitty thtat only USA and UK are remembered even Hitler admire the greeks.

Not quite sir, The Germans kept a professional force until the middle of the Belgo-Dutch-France campaign - roughly May 30 1940. The British in WW2 did not conscript until February 1940. The USA did not draft until end January 1942.
By the of WW2 conscripts but unlike WW1 most countries delayed conscription as long as tey could.

As a Turk I feel slightly out of place here. However, I do commemorate the brave Greek veterans who fought the Italian Facists and later the German National Socialists in the name of freedom and democracy. Although our 2 nations (Turkey and Greece) have had a bloody history of conflict, I look hopefully on to the future that peace and prosperity can be shared between neighbours, between friends, and between brothers.

the only battle of WW2 that is superior from Thermopylea was the epic battle of Hill 731.Greeks were outnumbered in strategic difficult possition and almost unarmed.They got thousands tons of bombs by artillery and air for 17 days and they managed to hold the hill.

I lament the strong sacrifice, heartiness, toughness and GRIT that the HELLENES of that time had shown. I wish this spirit of indomitable will and toughness still existed widely in Hellas today. It still exists in small pockets but not nearly enough as it used to. For me, this is very sad.........materialism has conquered us.

Admittedly, the Italians were by far the most civilized occupying force and committed no atrocities against civilians, even when their troops were ambushed by guerillas. The same cannot be said about Germans and Bulgarians who butchered thousands of people in reprisals. My grandma, God bless her soul, used to tell me that they didn't starve in 1941-42 because their village in Korinthia was under Italian jurisdiction and they refused to obey German directives for collection of foodstuffs.

Indeed. Even after the capture of Greece, the Italian troops were kind and treated the greeks as brothers not as enemies.
My grandfather survived the war too and he said that most italians were like that, unlike the Germans that were cruel even against their own allies (see Italian occupation by the Nazis before the end of the war)
Our countries share a common history since the ancient greek - roman empire times. They shouldn't have come to this.

Well what you said that all nations have courage, is true. But Italy did have a much better equipped army than greece, and a significantly better air force which helped a lot in Epirus later in the war.
Greece was pretty much unprepared too anyway.
The whole "they fought bravely" thing is because they did fight bravely like others did but they were ill equipped and in a worse spot and despite the odds they were able to repel a better army and even march in their soil.

At the time the presedent of USA stated and awarded a band of warriors during WW2 and stated, "the giants fight like Greeks" Germans invaded Greece, the battle was the top of the worst blood baths. Italy and Greece fought and Italy lost immediatly from the Creetan V division. English king that stole everything ran like a coward just like all English. The Brits, Greeks, and Crete battled side by side. Those 3 are the "blood brothers" of the war. Learn you history

Not quite sir, The Germans kept a professional force until the middle of the Belgo-Dutch-France campaign - roughly May 30 1940. The British in WW2 did not conscript until February 1940. The USA did not draft until end January 1942.
By the of WW2 conscripts but unlike WW1 most countries delayed conscription as long as tey could.

The reason for Italy's failur in WWII was disorganisation, incompetence, and lack of discipline.
Check a book entitled "Hitler's Mediterranean Gamble" by Douglas Porch, an American Military Historian.
It dwells vividly on Mussolini's failure to plan for the war.
That having been said, the Greeks fought bravely in WWII.
