Sounds like the trumpet they are talking about is playing the fifth, so that would be a G above high C. I can't tell if there is a screamer playing the octave or if it is an overtone I'm hearing.

re Space Chords and Phantom's Canon. Why does it have to be either or? They're BOTH great. You can still root for your favorite corps, but enjoy both warm ups.
I love Phantom, but I also enjoy the Cavies, Devils, Vanguard, and old 27th Lancers. Liking any of the latter four doesn't deminish my favorite corps the Phantom Regiment.

well this seemed to work for them last year, hence the championship. I would prefer to hear something musical and consistent over hearing euphoniums spliting their tones and breathing every 2 seconds just to play as loud as possible.
so phantom is my friggen dream corps, and hopefully within the next few years i will have the amazing opportunity to move out to illinois and try out. i almost worship them... lol
this is my first year marching corps and when i see them on tour this summer, especially when they play their canon warm up... i will just be balling like a baby! hahaha

Should every music ensemble be a chamber orchestra? The sound Phantom produces is patterned after a pipe organ. It is extremely well balanced. And yes it loud!!! But they can play soft as well. Dont forget these kids are moving while playing incredibly complex pieces. If u do not have an ear for DCI dont comment

please i moved much faster and harder drill then they did lol and i played much better. and i dont think all women should be blonde, but they should at least be women. lol. in this day in age, sounding like a "bugle" corps isn't acceptable. they should be able to play with sounds that sound like a brass istrument...not an organ...

okay, phantom regiment definitely has their own style of playing, but it is nasty. it is out of balance, bad tone quality, no ensemble listening skills, and disgustingly loud. just because phantom won last year does not make them a better and more musically playing core. they had an overall better show idea and executed it better.. according to the judges. just admit that what they do is gross. maybe its cool to you, but its gross.

What show were you watching? All I know is from 0:03 - 0:16, it literally sounds like walking into a slaughterhouse, hearing dying cows and their babies along with them. I mean, if that's the kind of sound you're going for, you nailed it, and deserve to be World Champions.
It's a technique used to produce better tone. You push the valves halfway, then play with alot of air then let the valves up. Try it, instead of sitting on youtube insulting that which you do not know.
"hathatsfuny," Quality = inconsistency. Quality is feeling your horn rattle within your grasp as you play; quality is not being together when you release notes, breathing at least every two beats, and sending your lips through the end of your horn. Quality is playing at a consistent quintuple forte and having your lips bleed because of it. Quality brass playing sounds like chain saws and jackhammers; quality - is the Phantom Regiment. SPARTACUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man I'm reading your posts and all they seem to be saying "anti-marching band/drum corps" in some form. Marching band and concert band are two different mediums, that is why they have different names and venues. When I go see a corps I want to hear something like this video. If I want to see CanadianBrass then I'll go see them. Give them a break too, these guys aren't professionals like the CandaianBrass.

i wouldnt want my name to be assosiated with that corp. Bad sounds, inconsistant starts and releases, uncharacteristic tones do not appeal to me...if you listen to truly phenomenal group like canadian brass and such then u realize that their approach to music and quality of said music is much better, and i believe other drum corps achieve that sound much better then the phantom regiment.

When they're popping from a volume level with good sound it's really not that bad. Next to is not infront. I have also seen CB and I know they are not mediocre. But you are trying to compare Gas to grapes. It's two totally different things.

I HAVE been in front of PR...just so you know. I don't know what else to say other then I think they sound bad. I'm sorry that you grew up thinking that sounds good. By the way your analogy is terrible lol you could have come up with a better one lol. DCI should be trying to model their sound after CB. It only makes sense. They are the leading brass ensemble. I know we don't see eye to eye, but I really do hope you can understand why I see it the way I do. I hope you march this summer.

Any corps can hang out... in fact, BD kinda hates Regiment. I've not even marched (DCI... I do march DCA) before, and I have friends in BAC, Regiment, Teal Sound, Pioneer, Blue Devils, and Cavis... there's not really a giant touch of stuckupness that makes you not want to hang out with people from different Corps.
I'm almost to the point where I can watch "Spartacus" without being in tears at the end. What an amazing sound and show from an amazing group of young people.

wow, for recording that from the ground, that was pretty insanely loud. imagine if u were in the press box. thats an immense amount of power. the only reason i didn't like this video is cuz u can't hear the tuba's to well cuz they're pointed up as if they were on the field, but other then that, thats a really insane warm-up.
agreed, the corps im marching with this year is having us play paralel all the time for that reason.. the people listening aren't up their down. im sure when we get to field it'll be diff. of course.
and endurance so that when the resistance is removed (half-valving), the actual action (in this case, playing "full valved") actually becomes feels easier and seems to require less work, (hopefully) leading to a bigger, more open and rich sound
The half-valve exercise is done create resistance to the air that the player is pushing so that when they play full on they can use more air without it feeling as though they are. This is done in much the same way that a baseball player will put a weight on the end of their bat and take some swings before going up to bat, or in the way that a runner may train with a parachute or tire being dragged along behind them. The point of the exercise to to build muscle
The point of the half-valving exercise is to really build up the tension and when the valves are pushed all the way down you're able to play really relaxed and confortably. Closing your throat isn't necessary. It's just using back pressure.

It's called "Half-Valving." The brass players are instructed to press their valves down halfway and try to maintain the same amount of tone and volume as much as possible. Once the instructor motions to do so, they release the valves and re-continue the open-valved note as controlled as possible. I'm not completely sure of the full purpose of the exercise, but I'm almost completely certain that it's to build air pressure, tone, and volume control across the entire hornline.
We do this in the corp I march, you half-valve, then when you push your valves all the way, its easier to play, thus the tone opens up, but you gotta maintain the same amount of air throughout, the only thing you change is the valves.

please i moved much faster and harder drill then they did lol and i played much better. and i dont think all women should be blonde, but they should at least be women. lol. in this day in age, sounding like a "bugle" corps isn't acceptable. they should be able to play with sounds that sound like a brass istrument...not an organ...

okay, phantom regiment definitely has their own style of playing, but it is nasty. it is out of balance, bad tone quality, no ensemble listening skills, and disgustingly loud. just because phantom won last year does not make them a better and more musically playing core. they had an overall better show idea and executed it better.. according to the judges. just admit that what they do is gross. maybe its cool to you, but its gross.

Also, if you ask any professional performing musician they would agree with me and tomthebomb721, so you guys can stay in your tiny little world that you think is music if you would like, but real musicians would never let themselves sound like that...OWNED!

What show were you watching? All I know is from 0:03 - 0:16, it literally sounds like walking into a slaughterhouse, hearing dying cows and their babies along with them. I mean, if that's the kind of sound you're going for, you nailed it, and deserve to be World Champions.

It's a technique used to produce better tone. You push the valves halfway, then play with alot of air then let the valves up. Try it, instead of sitting on youtube insulting that which you do not know.

Quality is feeling your horn rattle within your grasp as you play; quality is not being together when you release notes, breathing at least every two beats, and sending your lips through the end of your horn. Quality is playing at a consistent quintuple forte and having your lips bleed because of it. Quality brass playing sounds like chain saws and jackhammers; quality - is the Phantom Regiment. first of all the release isnt consistant at 56 it dies BIGTIME!!!! and thats not the only bad release and to tell me to learn something about music is stupid. music is made in performance halls not on a freakin football field with instruments thats arent used in symphonies. why dont YOU act yor age when it comes to music and realize that it sounds bad. get over the excitement of the composition and really HEAR their sounds...

Man I'm reading your posts and all they seem to be saying "anti-marching band/drum corps" in some form. Marching band and concert band are two different mediums, that is why they have different names and venues. When I go see a corps I want to hear something like this video. If I want to see CanadianBrass then I'll go see them. Give them a break too, these guys aren't professionals like the CandaianBrass.

I agree CB are very good. However other comments are correct. They are a totally different genre and medium. It is like women, should they all be blonde ? Of course not! Should every music ensemble be a chamber orchestra? The sound Phantom produces is patterned after a pipe organ. It is extremely well balanced. And yes it loud!!! But they can play soft as well. Dont forget these kids are moving while playing incredibly complex pieces. If u do not have an ear for DCI dont comment

i wouldnt want my name to be assosiated with that corp. Bad sounds, inconsistant starts and releases, uncharacteristic tones do not appeal to me...if you listen to truly phenomenal group like canadian brass and such then u realize that their approach to music and quality of said music is much better, and i believe other drum corps achieve that sound much better then the phantom regiment.

exxcecuted .25 better than BD. And Canadian brass is classical playing at a mediocre volume level. This is balls to the wall classical. The difference? The recording medium distorting the sounds. Go stand infront of them sometime, you'll change your mind right around the time your ears pop.

When they're popping from a volume level with good sound it's really not that bad. Next to is not infront. I have also seen CB and I know they are not mediocre. But you are trying to compare Gas to grapes. It's two totally different things.

I HAVE been in front of PR...just so you know. I don't know what else to say other then I think they sound bad. I'm sorry that you grew up thinking that sounds good. By the way your analogy is terrible lol you could have come up with a better one lol. DCI should be trying to model their sound after CB. It only makes sense. They are the leading brass ensemble. I know we don't see eye to eye, but I really do hope you can understand why I see it the way I do. I hope you march this summer.

Any corps can hang out... in fact, BD kinda hates Regiment. I've not even marched (DCI... I do march DCA) before, and I have friends in BAC, Regiment, Teal Sound, Pioneer, Blue Devils, and Cavis... there's not really a giant touch of stuckupness that makes you not want to hang out with people from different Corps.

Ever heard a King mellophone that didn't sound on the brighter side of the melly spectrum? They're made that way. If he had played on a Yamaha melly, it probably would have been darker.

wow, for recording that from the ground, that was pretty insanely loud. imagine if u were in the press box. thats an immense amount of power. the only reason i didn't like this video is cuz u can't hear the tuba's to well cuz they're pointed up as if they were on the field, but other then that, thats a really insane warm-up.

and endurance so that when the resistance is removed (half-valving), the actual action (in this case, playing "full valved") actually becomes feels easier and seems to require less work, (hopefully) leading to a bigger, more open and rich sound

The half-valve exercise is done create resistance to the air that the player is pushing so that when they play full on they can use more air without it feeling as though they are. This is done in much the same way that a baseball player will put a weight on the end of their bat and take some swings before going up to bat, or in the way that a runner may train with a parachute or tire being dragged along behind them. The point of the exercise to to build muscle

The point of the half-valving exercise is to really build up the tension and when the valves are pushed all the way down you're able to play really relaxed and confortably. Closing your throat isn't necessary. It's just using back pressure.

It's called "Half-Valving." The brass players are instructed to press their valves down halfway and try to maintain the same amount of tone and volume as much as possible. Once the instructor motions to do so, they release the valves and re-continue the open-valved note as controlled as possible. I'm not completely sure of the full purpose of the exercise, but I'm almost completely certain that it's to build air pressure, tone, and volume control across the entire hornline.

We do this in the corp I march, you half-valve, then when you push your valves all the way, its easier to play, thus the tone opens up, but you gotta maintain the same amount of air throughout, the only thing you change is the valves.

in my school's winter concert one of the trumet's did that "half-valving" in the peice sleigh ride and it was amazing it sounded just like a horse
