  • BD is still the best with the most titles!

  • As much as I like Phantom, it sounds like you haven't heard Carolina Crown warm-up in person. But Phantom's 2008 Spartacus is my all time favorite field show.

  • Its funny that there warm up is something that would destroy other bands chops lol

  • Comment removed

  • BD still RULES beyond Belief!!!

  • @MusicMasterJm No, Phantom has them beat sound wise. Being 2nd doesn't make people cry!

  • The beginning sounds like babies crying in aww

  • @peepers12 it is..didnt u know that they store all the babies thrown at them =)

  • I don't hear any falter either in their sound it's amazing. Best Baritones are always in PR....

  • No corps ever rings at their cutoffs the way Phantom does. I don't care what year it is. Go Phantom.

  • BD has won 13 titles.. BD is the best and everyone hates on them. They arent my favorite corps.. but they are the best.

  • @F0RCEGFX well then obviously having the best numbers doesn't mean too much if the fans have a bad attitude and they have the rep of being hated. it's not about numbers or arguments or anything, it's about sheer power and magic that is music. that goes for all the arguments. you can have as many trophies as you want, hell you can go buy a trophy and have it engraved however you want. but this right here is priceless. so just enjoy it.

  • @F0RCEGFX they are the best at what they do because they dont push themselvs, they do easy stuff

  • @percussiondncr22 except the percussion bc phantom percussion is always freakin beast :P

  • @percussiondncr22 No.. they are the best because they perform for the judges.. not for the fans. All they do is march for judges perfection while other corps take more fans into consideration.. and sorry i thought this was a different video before lol my bad about percussion comment. I generally don't like BD.. lol bc they play for the judges.. not for audience.

  • @F0RCEGFX hahha thats true, i have a lot of respect for bd but they arent my fav,

  • My corps in 09 got those horns that Phantom used in 08. They are awesome.

  • i wish i could hear this in person again. speakers do this NO justice.

  • I was at one of their shows and I was watching some batteries play their book and out of no where I heard this and I was like WOAH!!!!

  • That is definitely a lead squealing away at the end. Last I checked, overtones don't take breaths or chow releases.

  • What concert pitch is cord they play at the beginning before they go into canon? B-flat?

  • Consider all brass players...pwned.

  • it may be where the camera is but sounds like low brass is out playing high brass

  • Uhh... it's just a Bb chord. Just a high C in the trumpets...

  • @Burgerbob22

Sounds like the trumpet they are talking about is playing the fifth, so that would be a G above high C. I can't tell if there is a screamer playing the octave or if it is an overtone I'm hearing.

  • Now that I listen to it again, I can just barely hear that fifth... probably an overtone though, Phantom isn't much about random screamers.

  • and they are all about overtones

  • I just looked it up on itunes and it is sanctus and not canon.

  • Actually it's both. Sanctus (Canon in D).

  • Sanctus

  • Okay, as a music person, this really bugs me. Sanctus and Canon are two different songs!! This is Sanctus. NOT Canon.

Get it in your heads people please.

  • what's sanctus? why do people confuse it with canon?

  • Sanctus is a similarly sounding song, and I don't know why people do. I'm just a major music geek so things like that bug me lol

  • what is the big difference between Sanctus and Canon? i've searched it both on youtube but what is te big difference?

  • @GerryGuyCorpsGuy A canon is a style of writing, usually the same thing written in four parts that all start at different times, So essentially by the style Sanctus is a canon written in the key of D, Pachelbels Canon in D simply became famous but never took on another name :) thank you freshman music theory.

  • mmmmm.... that SAK sounds tasty

  • I think if you argue about which warmup exercise sounds more awesome, then you are a NERD. Like me.

  • Too bad they can play circles around BD anyday

  • @schantzman87 You're one of those drum corps guys that pretend they have no clue what they're talking about right? Because that statement was anything but the truth, Phantom has the 4th best hornline, at best. Btw how many Ott's does Phantom have? 2 or 3? BD? 22

  • @gatorsbrianz Hmm didnt know drum corps fans couldnt have opinions. damn. thanks!!

  • @schantzman87 I never said anything about not having an opinion, just adding my own.

  • @gatorsbrianz Don't want to sound like some stalker or anything, but didn't you leave Crown to join BD? Isn't that sort of going downhill? I mean...if you're in it to win, I guess that's fine.

  • @gatorsbrianz btw, I hate it when people let BD ride on it's past accomplishment. BD's 2009 hornline didn't win 22 brass titles, which means it isn't that much better than Phantom's. Historically speaking the Blue Devils are DEFINITELY superior to everyone else, I'll give you that much. But the present hornlines are only a point different and both have ZERO Jim Otts...

  • @RTGUSAS Are you stupud? Overall best in DCI are The Cadets.

  • @Rockabilly500 Blue Devils are 14 time world champions. Cadets have like nearly half that. And it's spelled "stupid", with an "i"...

  • @RTGUSAS Blue Devils are also 14 times overrated who don't know how to lose with class. DCI scores are all biased, they don't matter at all. Its whoever the judges want to win.

  • @JTSHHS True. Doesn't change the fact that BD is still historically the best corps out there.

  • @gatorsbrianz

you should realize that dci isn't about winning. sure there are rings and trophys and crap but thats just not what it is. thats my opinion

  • @schantzman87 count the titles...count the brass caption wins

  • @RebelHottyToddy just like a true BD fan/member. All that matters is winning. When was the last time you were emotionally moved by BD? Thousands are moved by Phantom's shows every year. Faust, Harmonic Journey, Into the Light, Spartacus. Just to name a few.

  • lawl

  • Dude, when they're half-valving it it sounds so freaking creepy!!

  • tru dat!!! hahahaha

  • i think it is a overtone and a soprano player screaming the last note.

  • Screamer.

    Chris Johnston.

  • @Ibanez3789 Screamer.

    Scott Dean.

  • Wrong. Scott Dean marched BD from 03-05.

  • re Space Chords and Phantom's Canon. Why does it have to be either or? They're BOTH great. You can still root for your favorite corps, but enjoy both warm ups.

I love Phantom, but I also enjoy the Cavies, Devils, Vanguard, and old 27th Lancers. Liking any of the latter four doesn't deminish my favorite corps the Phantom Regiment.

  • Very well said.

  • rofl tone split... fail more imo dude. PR kicked ass last year. but i still remember that long ass cord frmo the end of On Air 07, that was even better than this.

  • Your kidding me the tone isn't split

  • BD space chords has this beat im sorry but it does its jus that type of sound that puts your jaws on the ground

  • and thats why phantom won last seson

  • its a bad camera, get off youtube and listen to them in person, then come back to me!

besides BD's are a bunch of tools!

  • you can say that again lol

phantom my fav no matter what

  • Um no, While Space Chords are amazing, it PALES compared to this.

  • Um no, the opinion of which is better is purely subjective, and so both answers are "right".

  • i'll take this over bd's space chords any day, simply amazing

  • GO BILL HART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • goose bumps everywhere

  • holy shit.

so phantom is my friggen dream corps, and hopefully within the next few years i will have the amazing opportunity to move out to illinois and try out. i almost worship them... lol

this is my first year marching corps and when i see them on tour this summer, especially when they play their canon warm up... i will just be balling like a baby! hahaha

  • illinois is cavies man

  • and?

    Cavies are from Rosemont, Illinois.

    Phantom is from Rockford, Illinois.

I'm pretty much obsessed with P.R. (actually dci in general)

    Learn your shit.

    :)

  • You can have more than one corp in one state man..

  • ilikefood1221....not cool

  • i totally understand what ur talking about.

  • You dont have to move there.. hell a lot of phantom people are from texas.. lol..

  • yeah, i know...

it would just be more convenient than flying from jersey for every camp haha.

  • I can haz epic warm up? kthx, Phantom. I r spartacus!

  • Hey these are all great vids...i love phanton... every year they've always stolen my heart.

Also anyone to anyone whom have tried out. Can anyone give me some tips as to what they look for in tryouts? I'm possibly trying out this fall and i'd like to be as prepared as possible.

  • hey me too what my tech told me from cadets is that most corps dont look purely at your skill level they take potential into consideration

  • yeah i know Skyler Carter, he played trumpet

  • damn nice high sop at the end.

  • wow this gave me goose bumps.

  • anyone have the score sheet? =]

  • whenever i have a wedding..... my band!

  • i had the same idea. bride comes down the aisle on the podium like 08.

  • Is that doable???

(at ahjinomoto in case it doesn't appear right..)

  • lol

ones limit is ones imagination ^_^

  • dude i cant wait to start marching agin

  • Or you could tell him to try to actually MAKE Phantom. THEN talk junk! ;)

  • im trying to make phantom

  • i was front row on this and omg there sound that night was amazing

  • Hathat,

I agree CB are very good. However other comments are correct. They are a totally different genre and medium. It is like women, should they all be blonde ? Of course not! Should every music ensemble be a chamber orchestra? The sound Phantom produces is patterned after a pipe organ. It is extremely well balanced. And yes it loud!!! But they can play soft as well. Dont forget these kids are moving while playing incredibly complex pieces. If u do not have an ear for DCI dont comment

  • so who do you march with then? Each corps has a different philosophy of sound. To each his own I say.

  • I wont say who i marched with b/c its irrelevant but i do COMPLETELY agree well said!! i congratulate PR on their win

  • the best music education in texas. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Yeah.. thats where all the world class musicians hail from.. Texas. New York Philly? Nah.. I learned from the Amarillo Tooters. LOLOLOL Phantom rocks...

  • Comment removed

  • ummm i totally agree...it sounds like ass...im sorry but it sounds terrible! I'm not smurfing it if its true. Also, if you ask any professional performing musician they would agree with me and tomthebomb721, so you guys can stay in your tiny little world that you think is music if you would like, but real musicians would never let themselves sound like that...OWNED!

  • Right, because I'm not a real musician anyway. Apparently you're letting the camera talk for you. My advice you be to get up, move away from the computer, and go see one of these shows live where the camera isn't distorting the sound. Then you'll stop talking.

  • owned? they have a ring, what do you have?

  • you have obviously NEVER heard this live. this recording sounds like shit. hearing PR live is like nothing else on this earth. for me, watching vids like this is more for reminding me how awesome they were live, and sating my hunger till i can see them again.

  • ...wtf are talking about....thats part of the exercise

  • It's a technique used to produce better tone. You push the valves halfway, then play with alot of air then let the valves up. Try it, instead of sitting on youtube insulting that which you do not know.

  • "hathatsfuny," Quality = inconsistency. Quality is feeling your horn rattle within your grasp as you play; quality is not being together when you release notes, breathing at least every two beats, and sending your lips through the end of your horn. Quality is playing at a consistent quintuple forte and having your lips bleed because of it. Quality brass playing sounds like chain saws and jackhammers; quality - is the Phantom Regiment. SPARTACUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this will b the last thing i say b/c i cant stand people as ignorant as u and just so u know i do have an education from the best music education program in texas so dont talk crap when u dont know what u r saying, and i really am sincerly sorry for anyone you teach and for the fact that i dont accept mediocrity...

  • i dont expect someone with such a small musical vocabulary and literature to understand but i tried...and now people say im dumb and dont know what im talking about, despite the fact that i KNOW PR sounds like the cutest cat in the world being stuffed head first into a coke can

  • first of all the release isnt consistant at 56 it dies BIGTIME!!!! and thats not the only bad release and to tell me to learn something about music is stupid. music is made in performance halls not on a freakin football field with instruments thats arent used in symphonies. why dont YOU act yor age when it comes to music and realize that it sounds bad. get over the excitement of the composition and really HEAR their sounds...

  • uh...it was epically clean dude.

  • Man I'm reading your posts and all they seem to be saying "anti-marching band/drum corps" in some form. Marching band and concert band are two different mediums, that is why they have different names and venues. When I go see a corps I want to hear something like this video. If I want to see CanadianBrass then I'll go see them. Give them a break too, these guys aren't professionals like the CandaianBrass.

  • Comment removed

  • but dont you think they should strive to achieve that sound? i mesan it only make sense to me to try to sound as good as possible...and if i were anti drum corps i wouldnt march :P

  • i wouldnt want my name to be assosiated with that corp. Bad sounds, inconsistant starts and releases, uncharacteristic tones do not appeal to me...if you listen to truly phenomenal group like canadian brass and such then u realize that their approach to music and quality of said music is much better, and i believe other drum corps achieve that sound much better then the phantom regiment.

  • that is not to say however, that i dont think Spartacus was an extremely well designed and performed show, just not executed...

  • exxcecuted .25 better than BD. And Canadian brass is classical playing at a mediocre volume level. This is balls to the wall classical. The difference? The recording medium distorting the sounds. Go stand infront of them sometime, you'll change your mind right around the time your ears pop.

  • ummm your ears poping isnt a good thing...and i have been infront of them...in fact right next to them. I have also been infront ofthe canadian brass and if you think they are mediocre then you are much less educated then i thought and validates everything i have said...

  • When they're popping from a volume level with good sound it's really not that bad. Next to is not infront. I have also seen CB and I know they are not mediocre. But you are trying to compare Gas to grapes. It's two totally different things.

  • Yes the analogy should've been better. But This is a bugle corps. If it were called brass corps I would totally agree. But the bugle sound would be the accepted at this point.

  • So according to your reply you implied that you marched. Thats funny! With the ignorance of your observations I would have bet that you never did a roll step or an 8 to 5 in your life. Who did you march with??? What instruement did you perform with ?And what year ?? The only corps' that can hang w PR is BD and Cavies.

  • I'm almost to the point where I can watch "Spartacus" without being in tears at the end. What an amazing sound and show from an amazing group of young people.

    Long live Phantom Regiment!

  • and just so you know i believe the mello solo in the ballad of their show has extremely characteristic trumpet sound. its a great trumpet tone

  • Are you deaf? If not, then you're the greatest moron in the world.

  • LOL svolypet, after hearing these guys live, one would probably become deaf!! Haha

  • Ever heard a King mellophone that didn't sound on the brighter side of the melly spectrum? They're made that way. If he had played on a Yamaha melly, it probably would have been darker.

  • wow, for recording that from the ground, that was pretty insanely loud. imagine if u were in the press box. thats an immense amount of power. the only reason i didn't like this video is cuz u can't hear the tuba's to well cuz they're pointed up as if they were on the field, but other then that, thats a really insane warm-up.

  • agreed, the corps im marching with this year is having us play paralel all the time for that reason.. the people listening aren't up their down. im sure when we get to field it'll be diff. of course.

  • Man I honestly think that if they did play straight at you you probably wouldnt have a face. Like you said thats a hell of a lot of power.

  • and endurance so that when the resistance is removed (half-valving), the actual action (in this case, playing "full valved") actually becomes feels easier and seems to require less work, (hopefully) leading to a bigger, more open and rich sound

  • The half-valve exercise is done create resistance to the air that the player is pushing so that when they play full on they can use more air without it feeling as though they are. This is done in much the same way that a baseball player will put a weight on the end of their bat and take some swings before going up to bat, or in the way that a runner may train with a parachute or tire being dragged along behind them. The point of the exercise to to build muscle

  • The point of the half-valving exercise is to really build up the tension and when the valves are pushed all the way down you're able to play really relaxed and confortably. Closing your throat isn't necessary. It's just using back pressure.

  • how would you produce the same effect of the half valving for trombone? is it even possible?

  • Maybe if you have an F-attachment... but it would be pretty pointless.

  • well.. actually.. i play trumpet and i can make that sound without valves.. im trying to think of how to explain it... ok likepush out with your lips and like close your throat haha idk how else to explain it

  • why is this called Canon??? this music is from the opener of Phantoms 2003 show "Harmonic Journey"...

  • Because its an arrangement of Pachebel's Canon in D.

  • i'm probably gonna sound really newbish...but what exactly are they doing before the canon? the nazzally buzzing thing...what's it for and how do you do it?

  • It's called "Half-Valving." The brass players are instructed to press their valves down halfway and try to maintain the same amount of tone and volume as much as possible. Once the instructor motions to do so, they release the valves and re-continue the open-valved note as controlled as possible. I'm not completely sure of the full purpose of the exercise, but I'm almost completely certain that it's to build air pressure, tone, and volume control across the entire hornline.

  • We do this in the corp I march, you half-valve, then when you push your valves all the way, its easier to play, thus the tone opens up, but you gotta maintain the same amount of air throughout, the only thing you change is the valves.

  • cool! i'm gonna try this cuz it obviously works! thanks

  • yeah its kinda like tht horse sound trumpets can make with the "Half-Valving"

  • in my school's winter concert one of the trumet's did that "half-valving" in the peice sleigh ride and it was amazing it sounded just like a horse

  • Oh Shit.

  • Holy crap. I was there live.

  • the baritones sound like a moose at the beginning lololololololololololololololololololol

  • Talk about height requirement lol. Oh yea, i creamed my pants.

  • Simply beautiful...listen to those overtones just ring.

  • these guys are so good!!!!

  • who needs the trademarks, we all know who this is.. well anybody who has a clue anyways about what's cool

  • No need for trade marks on YouTube as long as your not making any kind of money for it. Lol such idiots these days.

  • way to make yourself look like an moron. a group representing regiment has been getting videos removed and accounts deleted to protect their copyrights, not because you or anyone else is "making money for it," but because they are legally bound to protect the interests of those whole sold them the music.

i do not believe this warmup falls in that category, but nevertheless, your logic was wrong and your attitude was shitty.
