  • I just love his voice. It's exciting, but at the same time it can be so soothing. He's just marvelous!

  • Really don't like this version; cant explain it, the lyrics just seem wrong to me coming out his mouth - like the soul of the song just doesnt come through...

  • He is doing the Paul Simin version.

  • If I had a time machine, there are many things I would do, but right now I'd go back to the performance of this song, and at 1:08 I would take a phone book to the side of the head of the stupid bitch who yelled "Freebird!" I just discovered this song yesterday and it's amazing, as is the sad story of the man who wrote it.

  • very good cover! His voice works very well with this song!

  • i have never been a fan of mayer but it impresses me the covers he chooses that I have heard from his live material. He seems to have great taste in music including this relatively unknown to the general public Jackson C Frank gem. Jackson C Frank's debut is among the very best 60's folk albums I have heard and I recommend it to any folk fans.

  • i doubt jackson c. frank would be pleased.

while mayer doesn't do terribly with frank's song, mayer is a douche (ref. his rolling stone, playboy interviews) and jackson c. frank would be less than content with such an asshat covering his intensely personal tune.

i certainly don't discredit mayer's abilities with a guitar, his deportment leaves much to be desired. can be likened in similar aspects to 'clapton:' phenomenal guitar work, pisspoor attitude.

love the music, hate mayer as a person

  • @jaboje8 Opinions are like assholes..... You are one.

  • @justin4453 That is the best thing I've heard in awhile! Kudos to you!

  • @jaboje8 Who are you to say what oppinion Jackson C Frank would have on John Mayer?

  • there is a million versions of this great song, ive done it myself for

over 30 years and more. seen jackson at cousins, seen wizz and bert

do it. listen to john mayers version again hes got a feel for it, theres

nothing wrong with this one. pete.

  • three sets of musicians that i really enjoy did their own rendition of this song, including Mr. Mayer. my favorite version of this song is by Simon and Garfunkel. i think they crafted their version better than anyone. but opinions are like assholes i guess.

  • I like John but this is a shitty cover. Some songs should be left alone.

  • Best version by far is Darrell Scotts, Jackson would be proud of him, a genius. . .Look it up on youtube. .

  • @roulettecomputers And Laura Marling's!!!!

  • Hes paying respect to the blues, if you have a heart, you'd be open to this and be happy someone's still keeping blues music alive this day in time. shush your mouths.

  • What a douche

  • Mayer ruins yet another song.

  • Laura Marling? Anybody?

  • @afarg Thanks for the nudge to laura marling. Just been listening to loads of covers of this song. Absolutly love it. Laura's is good. Counting crows do a really good one aswell. You could sing this in the shower with an out of tune banjo and it would still be a great song.

  • @afarg No, Jackson C Frank.

  • Comment removed

  • @afarg Laura's awesome, this cat wrote it: Jackson C. Frank`s "Blues Run The Game"

  • Jack Steadmans version is the best

  • the original was much better....but i wouldve never heard it had i not listened to johns version first...funny how that works

  • I think Nick drakes version is the best, but then i again i think everything Drake did was amazing. I wish there were more artist like him... Not really digging this version, though i will admit Mayer is an amazing guitarist. He just needs to tune down the douche.

  • yeh come on it was pretty good, alot of people wont know but then they might look it up and learn something, maybe about themselves you know

  • Alternate title:

    John Mayer Ruins the Song.

I'm guessing 85% of people at that concert hadn't heard Frank sing this or they wouldn't be cheering the same pappy soft nonsense from a man who seems to take malicious pleasure in riding roughshod over some of the world's greatest songs.

His cover of Hendrix, likewise, makes me feel physically sick.

  • @puiyv I was sickened the other day when I heard someone in the street ask his friend if he had heard this 'new' song called 'free fallin'' by John Mayer!

  • Even Simon and Garfunkel couldn't do JCF's original justice. This is a v poor version IMO, no soul to it at all.

  • Wow. I am not even a fan of JM, but this cover was great.

  • john mayer did this song justice! awesome

  • wow way to ruin a great song. i appreciate that he can play the song, but damn man you just can't beat j.c.f.'s vocals.

  • nick drake

  • @alejandro8888 Nick Drake covered 'Blues Run the Game'. it was Jackson C. Frank who wrote and originally recorded it.

  • I love it!

  • THIS IS GREAT

  • THIS IS GREAT

  • LOVED hearing this song at the concert!! Incredible talent, that John - even when covering. Just beautiful!

Thanks, Chaferbud, for posting all that you do for us Mayer fans here!! Wouldn't have heard many of the songs he's done over the years if not for you...so, thanks a million!!

by the way, the quality is amazing. did you get any other recordings? I'd really appreciate hearing them.

  • Awesome

    Great quality too!

  • I just saw him perform this song 2 nights ago in San Jose for his concert. sounds just like that same performance. dope upload

  • Is this written by Simon and Garfunkel or Jackson Frank?

  • I think Jackson C. Frank wrote the song. Paul Simon produced the album. Simon and Garfunkel covered it later on. Amazing song isn't it?:)

  • @HeartBeatOfYourLife Indeed it is :) <3

  • sweet!

great second shot as well, any chance of giving me a link to it?

  • Awesome upload!

He also played this as an intro to wheel once.
