  • In my view, Goldikova can be remembered no other way than just the incredible race-mare that she was. The little engine that could, and did. That said, even though she did manage 2 G1 wins in the Prix D' Ispahan and the Prix Rothschild in 2011, and never finished worse than 2nd in any of her other European races, and 3rd in the BC Mile, still can't help but think her connections kept her racing a year longer than they should've. She should've been retired after the 2010 season, IMO.

  • Goldikova = The european "wog"

Peslier should of been slugged in the mouth after that 2011 Breeders Cup Mile fiasco.

  • Immortal Verse is properly named, as she could be the one the upset the Immortal (Goldikova) in the upcoming Breeders Cup in the U.S. But I'll still go with Goldikova as she had a very wide trip in the Marois and this will be the race of the Century coming up.

  • Goldikova, what a legend!

  • Lets see what happen but i thinkl CC its going to race a lot to beat goldi!!!!

  • The most Group/Grade I wins ever by a female European horse. Looking forward to watching her tomorrow Goldikova always a pleasure to see such a horse.

  • @NinjaSquirrel30

    H-20 :-D

  • Canford cliffs its 2 or 3 lenghts behind goldikova, he doesn`t probe he is a great miller, its a wonderful horse, but not so good as goldikova in a mile!

  • IMO, if this year's Queen Anne set's up exactly like this one did in 2010? Goldikova could find it very difficult to hold off a charging Canford Cliffs. Because I personally believe that Canford Cliffs turn of foot is even faster than Paco Boy's was. Plus, Canford Cliffs has really thrived over the surface at Ascot in the Coventry and the St Jame's Palace. I'm not saying that Goldikova can't or won't win the race again? I'm just saying she doesn't want Canford Cliffs closing on her at the wire.

  • @ astrenvi Yeah that would be a supurb race. Why over 7.5 not 8?. I think bc would run a strong 8f.

  • Would love to see goldikova against black caviar over 8 furlongs. I know black caviar has never raced over 8 before but in her last couple of starts she looked like a true miler the way she settled. And then went past haylist inside the final furlong.

  • @SoulSurvivor79

The best ever race would be a goldi vs BC vs Frankel vs CC over 7.5 f :-D whatever the racetrack!

  • Let goldikova take on So You Think anywhere between 1600-2400 wahtever suits her wont matter

  • @golferandy82 Well Goldikova and So You Think won their Group 1 races in France and Ireland respectively today but I doubt they're going to be facing each other anytime soon. Goldikova has a date with Canford Cliffs and maybe Frankel, while SYT will be facing the 10/12 furlong horses like Workforce and Midday. Both brilliant horses.

  • I like Richard Hughes as a jockey, but I think he played the waiting game too extravagantly on Paco Boy against Goldikova sometimes. If he had kept him a bit more upsides he would have beaten her at least once in my opinion. Goldikova is something special and she could not be picked up like Paco Boy picked up the runners in this Spring Cup. Hughsie gave him a bit too much to do against the great mare.

  • Black Caviar is rated running to 135 against what aus has on offer that 135 might disapear if she ventures into europe. She needs to run outside melbourne 1st to be considered in same breathe as Goldikova the worlds no1 mare. And IMHO i think canford cliffs does meet goldikova this year he will beat her... turn him off after 1f and job done.

  • @PMontgomery0001 Your joking to think that Black caviars rating of 135 will disappear if she ventures to europe. If you actually watch her and see the ease she beats her oppostion every week. Black caviar is the best mare and sprinter in the world. In the hong kong sprint ortensia got within 2.5 lengths of jj the jet plane and rocket man and run unsuitably to her. In australia ortensia couldnt get within 8 lengths of BC when she was eased down. Europe will only confirm her status as the best

  • @golferandy82

As long as BC doesn't face the other top horses outside her country, there'll always be a doubt about her real talent. I'm a fan of BC and that's why I do hope she will come into Europe or the US to compete against other horses. You certainly can't be a true champion if you stay home in Australia. And you can't be a true Champion if you stay over the same length.

  • @astrenvi

But She doesnt have to run over different distance is goldikova or frankel going to win a race over 3200m no doeas that mean that they cant be true champions. Sprinting in Australia has proven to be the dominant in the world the last decade she doesnt have to go overseas, our second raters are going over their Star witness and hichinbrook and they are both at the top of betting. enough said.

  • @golferandy82

But a horse who can (easily) win on a mile, 10f or 1m 4f or longer (or shorter) is an absolute Champion, a dream horse. I disagree with you, BC has to go overseas, there are top horses elsewhere. We don't know her limits (I hope she doesn't have :-) and easily winning against the same horses is sometimes almost boring. Just let her come overseas!

  • It is an absolute shame that she got two votes for the horse of the year honor in the US. What is even more irritating that the gave the title to Zenyatta who almost exclusively run against mares and only in her home track. I am partial because she made me plenty money. I love her!!

  • Black Caviar rated above her now

  • Goldikova was really brilliant holding off the late charge of Paco Boy in this race. Absolutely can't wait until Goldikova returns to Ascot in June, 2011 for another crack at the Queen Anne Stakes, and this time an engagement with Canford Cliffs. IMO, that could really be a difficult race to call? Canford Cliffs has also been a beast at Ascot, and IMO is bit faster over a mile than Paco Boy. Goldikova vs. Canford Cliffs will be the most anticipated match-up over mile, possibly ever?

  • best mare since her mum pure class

  • ewe kamu memek

  • she's the best miler in the world at present i don't think canford cliffs is ever going to beat her, i think richard hannon was afraid to meet her all 2010 he always avoid her and i think he's got he's reasons.

I hope they meet at royal ascot 2011, ill be there anyway.

  • is goldikova undefeated?

  • @BreyerGirl25 No she got 7th Prix D'Ispahan "09 3rd Prix de la Foret '09 2nd Prix Jacques le Marios '10 but out of 14 to date races, not bad! She's among the great. The greatest female miler of our time.

  • @GoldenOakFarm .... she also lost her first three races in '08.... beasted by the phenom Zarkava, Goldikova's great but she couldn't get within two lengths of Zarkava in the Pouliches over a mile!

  • @richfairclough123 I agree, over a mile and Goldikova has a good chance of losing. She's an absolutely stunning mare to watch at a mile. :)

  • If Freddie Head and the connections of Goldikova truly are going to bring the great mare back to race again in 2011? And shoot for a 4th straight Breeders Cup Mile win? I think it would be a huge injustice to racing if the fans don't get to see Goldikova and Canford Cliffs square off at least one time in their careers. TJMO.

  • Of the 4 cracks that Paco Boy took at trying to beat Goldikova. I don't think he ever again came as close to succeeding as he did in this race. IMO.

  • I think they should have retired her

    shes earned it

  • This filly is such a great runner, look at the way she streaches her neck for the photo finish :)

  • i think this great mare has answered you critics..simply amazing!!!!

  • GOLDIKOVA,es una yegua para la historia.

  • if ya wanna beat her ya gotta line up against her----very simple---she never ducked anybody---last chance on sat ----will it be a cold exacta??--her and her rival paco ?

so glad its a great field as it will help her price---maybe 2-1???

  • @ps525984 i agree with you i am not nocking her simply you cant she has been

outstanding but i would have loved to see canford cliffs run against her it would have been a great race,

  • @ps525984 may be not her last chance i here she is still in training in 2011 so she may run against canford cliffs and what a great race that will be,cant wait to see these two great horses race together.

  • if ya wanna beat her ya gotta line up against her----very simple---she never ducked anybody---last chance on sat ----will it be a cold exacta??--her and her rival paco ?

  • ive watched this race over and over again and i think if canford cliffs was in this race i have no doubt that canford cliffs would have beeten her not taking anything away frome this great mare but in my opinion i think cc would have one she mite have been in front to long and cc likes to challeng something inside the final furlong, but that is my own judgment.

  • Paco Boy a certainty beaten.

  • @bgardiner2000 bullshit

  • @dessiesdoneit Aren't you a clever one.

  • Didn't run his best race in the Queen Anne Stakes. But I'm really impressed by the French colt, Dalghar. 11-4-3-2 lifetime now. Those numbers include races that Dalghar has gone on to run since he ran in this race. He also ran a fantastic Betfair Cup at Goodwood. Looked like Dalghar was going to win that race. But ended up finishing 3rd in a blanket finish that saw Lord Shanakill and Cat Junior just nose out Dalghar for the win and 2nd place honors. A very good looking colt though. IMO.

  • After numerous times of watching this race, I just don't see any horse have the raw talent to beat Goldikova! To me, she has this incredible 3 furlong terrific burst of speed and she's push button. Thats not to take anything away from the talented colts Paco Boy and Canford Cliffs, but in this race. again to me, Goldikova ran idiling for at least 75'. And when she saw PB, she held him at bay. PB ran true to his form, but if he closed that much ground, why didn't he win? Just my POV...

  • @eazilyiapproach Some very good points EA but I do wonder if she was left in front sooner than Peslier would have liked? With that in mind, and the make-up of tomorrow's Jacques Le Marois field, do you think she' s likely to have more cover and therefore be produced later?

  • @Sarastro030981 Hello Sarastro, thank you for your reply. IMO, I think that Goldikova can do anything just as long as the groud is good to firm or firm. She has produced 2 great runs in the BC which has led me to two conclusions: She has a natural high cruising stride, therefore, as in the '08 Mile, honest pace, Peslier covered up then let her run (with trouble). I live on the west coast in California, and at Santa Anita, when you get blocked like that and with the short stretch, it doesn't bode

  • @Sarastro030981 (Cont'd) well for any jock trying to close down on honest fractions. In '09, a very fast pace, and we saw Peslier take her well off the pace, as great jocks do, knowing that all he had to do is have a clear run and produce her and she showed EXACTLY the mental race that I had envisioned the race unfolding but was "goose bumped...lol" by the turn of foot that she displayed even in deep strecth when she was checked before the finish. In the end, it does not matter!

  • @eazilyiapproach, Makfi must have had that "raw talent" to beat Goldikova and Paco Boy in the same race. If Makfi can beat Goldikova. I guarantee you that Canford Cliffs could. Because Canford Cliffs has a much more explosive turn of foot than Makfi. JMO.

  • @GBeret83 I wouldnt garuntee nothing, Makfi has been found out to be a bookie horse and has been retired. There no way in a million years he would beat Goldikova on firm ground. And neither would Canford Cliffs.

  • @dessiesdoneit, It may be that Goldikova can beat Canford Cliffs. But Canford Cliffs has ran outstanding at Ascot himself. As a 2yr.old in the Coventry Stakes, and as a 3yr.old in the St James's Palace Stakes. I'm not sure how you could just summarily dismiss Canford Cliffs as having no chance to beat Goldikova on fast ground as well as Canford Cliffs also run's on fast ground. Paco Boy has gotten to within a head of Goldikova on fast ground. And I believe Canford Cliffs is faster than Paco Boy.

  • @GBeret83 Your right, he would give her a big race but I think the mare is very tough and hard to beat.

But what a race it would be if Canford Cliffs ran in the BC Mile, him and Goldikova would bring the house down. Maybe not as much as Zenyatta if she wins lol If Zenyatta win another BC Classic there will be uproars, she will become an American legend if she isnt one already. Only beef I have with her is that she hasnt run in more big races. She tends to just run in the fillies races.

  • @GBeret83 hi i see that goldikova will be in training in 2011 so canford cliffs will probably run against her after all cant wait it will be the clash of the season.

  • I think it's a crying shame for thoroughbred racing that Goldikova and Canford Cliffs will likely never meet on the turf over a mile. Not even once. Two of the best milers on turf in the history of the sport. I think it would be the most exciting and anticipated race over a mile, at least for this decade. I don't know which one would win? But I do think Canford Cliffs is the one colt that would make Olivier Peslier drag out Goldikova's absolute best effort. It would great to see the two meet.

  • The owners know they will never get another like Goldikova and she just keeps getting better, they think she can do it again at 6

  • Exactly dosent work like that, he runs faster than paco boy so he would have beat Goldikova, she was idling for half a furlong for christs sake and pulled out more at the line whe she had to, if anything was good enough to give her a lead for another half furlong she would have won a length. Canford could give her something to think about but no danger she would beat her this year. He might get his chance next year because there talking about bringing goldikova out at 6 again.

  • For me Fuisse can do a big race in the Jacques le marois

  • firstly paco boy is WELL HELD in this race, she went too early and that was the problem, yes paco was gaining but IMO had his chance to go past and win the race!just pause the race at 2:04 and see the distance between the 2 and goldi increases as they get closer to the line!!i thought it was obviously in real time too!always holding him! i think canford would be a different proposition, hes better than paco, and rvw is better than paco too!hes not even 100% yet!!impossible to say who'd win!

  • All the horses on the inside apart from Godikova died a death, it was the horses running off the fence that were finishing the race, on a strict line through Aqlaam Goldikova had 12L in hand over DreamEater so I think Goldikova did not run up to her best form, was it was a of the ground next to the fence or going too soon or maybe she was just idling in infront . I think PB was flattered by his proximity to GK, even if D E had run the race of his life he should not have got within 8L of GK

  • After watching Richard Hughes hand ride Canford Cliffs right on by Rip Van Winkle in the Sussex Stakes. That's the colt that I want to see take on Goldikova over a mile. That's not a knock at Paco Boy at all. Paco Boy ran a terrific race in the Queen Anne Stakes. But came up just short. I'm not sure Canford Cliffs would come up just short. Even Richard Hannon says Canford Cliffs is the best horse he's ever trained. That's with Paco Boy and Dick Turpin also in the barn.

  • @GBeret83 Richard Hannon Say's? trainers & Jockeys get it wrong more often than not, O'Brien sent Cape Blanco to France instead of the English Derby yet it as proved to be is best 1 1/2 mile horse and as beaten Workforce twice, trainers are alway's talk their horses up. the time of CC race was slower that posted by Goldikova & PB and all ran on the same day at Ascot, hearts of fire was also a bit unlucky in CC race as he was blocked when trying to make his run.

  • There's just no denying Goldikova's greatness. I think we were likely seeing the world's best female miler and the world's best male miler going at it here in the Queen Anne Stakes. With the female miler prevailing, but not much between the two on the day. But there's no question, Goldikova stands atop the miler's heap along. She is the top of the list. But I do anxiously look forward to a re-match between these two sometime during the 2010 season. Because Paco Boy is a much improved horse, too.

  • She is one of the best I have seen. Her win from Aqlaam last season was unbelievable. She made good horses look like donkeys. Paco Boy is a star too. I don't think he would have got to her as she probably had a bit left. hope they face each other again before they go off to stud (perhaps meeting in the stud too)

  • @08DENMAN, Much agreed. You can't deny that Goldikova is as a good as it gets over a mile. But as you said, Paco Boy is also a star. Paco Boy is definitely a much improved horse from 2009 to 2010. And he was no slouch in 2009. But I hope we get a chance to see the two meet again sometime during the 2010 season. Because after the 2010 Breeders Cup Mile, Goldikova will be retired. I don't know about Paco Boy? But if they don't meet again in 2010. It's not going to happen again at all.

  • Zacinto really looked a lot better in this race than he looked against Paco Boy in the Lockinge Stakes. The Coral Eclipse Stakes will be Zacinto's first start in a race beyond 8 furlongs. I'm anxious to see how he finishes at Sandown over the extended 10 furlongs trip. With the Coral Eclipse field now whittled down to 6 runners, Zacinto could be a player if he can get the trip? But I think Dar Re Mi win's the race if she run's as well as she did in the Sheema Classic. JMO.

  • The announcer goes on about Goldikova having 9 Group 1 wins, closing in on the record. Is that the record for Europe? Zenyatta has 11 Grade or Group 1 wins, and 4 Grade or Group 2 wins. Plus 1 maiden win, and 1 allowance win.

  • @GBeret83 For every group 1 in Europe there is 5 in America

  • @GBeret83 Yes but think about how many of those Grade 1 wins were dire races, then compare that to Goldikova's Group/Grade 1 wins where I think she's met a current or future Group 1 winner plus Classic winners in every race. And cmcgarth1O is right, there are far fewer Group 1s in Europe compared to the USA, so the top class animals run against and defeat each other more often.

  • A statement I'll make for the record. I don't lend a lot of credence to this race for Rip Van Winkle because it was his debut race for 2010 after being off the track since November's Breeders Cup Classic. But I will say, if Rip has to meet Paco Boy in 2010 later in the season? He'll find a different colt entirely this season. Rip may have beaten him in the 09' Sussex Stakes as 3yr.old's. But Paco Boy is a vastly improved colt in 2010. I believe he'll mow Rip under this season if they race? JMO.

  • Comment removed

  • Rip Van Winkle is a decent colt. But he's not come anywhere close to living up to the expectations, or the reputation that Ballydoyle put out on him as a 3yr.old in 2009. Fame and Glory, as 4yr.old's, would run circles around Rip Van Winkle, IMO. I don't think it would even be that close of a race. I know this is Rip's 2010 debut. But the excuses for him losing will continue on through the 2010 season. Because he'll certainly be beaten again. A decent colt. But massively overrated. IMO.

  • Goldikova simply Queen of the track in Europe and 2x BC champion. Only Zarkava could top it!

  • Comment removed

  • chrispocket paco boy didnt miss the break and wouldnt rate paco better than goildy cause she won 9 group 1s talking through ur pocket mate

  • Comment removed

  • paco boy's trip was fine. when a horse needs cover to unleash their best run, slight traffic issues will always happen. goldikova outran him on the square by a head.

  • The difference in the race, ultimately, was that Goldikova got into the clear and started her run early. Paco Boy had to pick his way through traffic, and started his run late. But that final burst of speed that Paco Boy let loose with was quite impressive. A much improved effort by Zacinto from how he looked in the Lockinge Stakes. As for Rip Van Winkle, O'Brien really threw him under the bus. Making a race with competition like this his 2010 debut. Rip needed a start or two before this race.

  • @GBeret83 The thing is rip van winkle couldnt have ran to the best of his potential in this race but this is aiden o brien we are talking about and if he cant get a horse fit and ready for a race like this then there is no hope for anyone.Goldikova is a great animal but rip van winkle beat paco boy last year fair and square and paco boy hasnt improved 6 or 8 lenghts since then

  • @kopkingstevie You forget a few thing, weight for age horses need to improve 8Ib from 3 to 4 some horses do this some do not, RVW as run 2 bad races now, PB was not in the form of is life last year, I think PB was abit flattered today as he came late and wide from off the pace, If goldikova had come from of the pace I think she would have cut PB down, but she was up there from the start and out in front too long, do not forget how much ground Goldikova made up in Santa Anita from the death box

  • @kopkingstevie Rip Van Winkle did beat Paco Boy last year but to say it was "fair & square" might be overdoing it as Paco Boy was found to be injured afterward (& didn't run for rest of the year). GBeret's right - RVW should never have been in the race without a start or 2 before. I don't think Paco Boy lost because of traffic problems, he didn't, the jockey just totally missed the break & cost him the race - any respectable handicapper would rate Paco the bet vs Goldikova next time.

  • @GBeret83 Horse often look good when coming from off the pace, Goldikova was doing the donkey work along way out, Goldikova was in far more trouble in Santa Anita from the death box than PB was, she came late and wide from 2nd last but still got up to win, If goldikova had come from off the pace and PB had done the donkey work in front, she would have won by 1/2 at least. Goldikova can win from the front or from of the pace but she is at her best running past horses, 8G1 at a mile no excuse

  • @kelletman, I don't know how you could really consider sitting right off of the pace for about 2/3 of the race behind Rip Van Winkle and Calming Influence "the donkey work." LOL. I call it sitting right off of the pace, then stealing first run for home. It appeared to me that Rip and Calming Influence were the two actually doing the donkey work in the race. JMO.

  • @GBeret83 Goldikova was up with the pace for most of the race, taking it up along way out while Paco boy sat 6 lengths off Goldikova, you could say Goldikova was always doing the donkey work for P B as she was always in front of him from the start of the race to the finish, P B run came to a end 15 yards while Goldikova pulled out more, he would not have past her in another furlong, history will always have Goldikova down as the better horse so you will just have to live with it.

  • Makes you think how good Zarkava was, after all she picked up and carried Goldikova twice in the French 1000 guineas and the French oaks.

  • @denilson200 Zarkava was probably the greatest 3yo filly of the last 50 years. What a great Arc we could have seen with Sea The Stars if they kept her out. IMO the best horse won the race, Goldikova can come from behind, go from the front, she just travels so powerfully and has just as good a turn of foot as Paco Boy, you can argue that had she got a lead for another half furlong she would have won by a length and a half, when paco got within a neck, he wasnt getting any closer I can assure you.

  • Loved Paco Boys performance and knew it would be the rival in this race after impressive run at Newbury. Rip was poor :(

  • The BBC pundits can be plonkers sometimes - Claire Balding says today Goldikova was unbeatable but the evidence suggests that she clearly could've been beaten - Richard Hughes lost sight of her for a second and therefore missed when she broke. Another day and you'd have to be crazy to say she would definitely beat Paco Boy again - he's finished all over the top of her.

Rip Van Winkle should have gone for the Prince of Wales - an easier option for a comeback race.

  • @chrispowellchelt, I'll say this much for sure. Anyone who knows anything about racing, know's how difficult that Goldikova can be to beat at 8 furlongs. That said, Paco Boy was a very good miler in 2009, but is much improved on that form in 2010. I think you're absolutely right. Paco Boy finished all over the top of Goldikova. If she hadn't stole the break for the wire first, Paco Boy potentially win's this race. If there's a horse that can beat Goldikova in 2010, it's Paco Boy. IMO.

  • rip van winke was awful.shame

  • This mare is amazing. Here we go three peat at Breeders' Cup Mile 2010!

  • Thnaks . Great race and superb quality clip.

  • thanks for posting ,what a great filly!

  • What a mare!

I thought Paco Boy had her at the end - but she's such a determind little girl!

It made me laugh how she tried to headbutt her trainer afterwards, haha.

  • What a great race. Olivier may have moved a little early and about got caught. It'll be great to see them on the soft going at churchill. Hope Paco Boy will come to. Thanks for posting.
