I said 'turning to something' to make a particular point, does not by any means need to mean supporting it in any significant way. The Young Turk only showed a small portion of Anita Dunn's comments on Mao. She was not joking. As far as the Young Turk's counterarguments, they are silly. Dunn claims that she was simply quoting Lee Atwater. Where is the proof of Lee Atwater saying the exact same words in the exact same context? I have yet to see any independent proof outside of Dunn's claim. Next, Newt's Mao quote, the only one SLIGHTLY comparable to Dunn's, still does not touch Dunn's laudatory praise of Mao.
Newt should have chosen someone better to quote, but did he ever actually claim that Mao was one of his favorite political philosophers? Thirdly, the final argument of President Bush recommending a Mao biography to Karl Rove is the most absurd yet. How in the world is recommending the reading of a Mao biography in ANY way comparable to Dunn's words. Where are the parallels?
My history professor required the reading of a Mao biography for his course on China. Does this make him a lover of Mao? A thousand times no! Just because someone suggests the reading of a Mao biography (or that of Hitler, Stalin, or Attila the Hun, for that matter) does not mean that they support the person whom the biography is about.
It is possible that a person recommends a biography because they want the person they are recommending the book to, to see how bad of a tyrant the individual was. For example, isn't it possible that President Bush wanted Rove to further observe the awfulness of Mao? Comparing a recommendation of a Mao biography to Dunn's SERIOUS quote is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

The line "...not often coupled with each other " is obviously a witticism, yes. But clearly it was only a side-remark to buttress her mirthless reference to Mao and was not the sole, preconceived motive for the reference.

Mother Theresa was a huckster who ultimately helped very few people. She was NEVER a political philosopher. Read Christopher Hitchens' book about her and watch his film on you tube. It has been proven time and time again that she was a fraud. She provided and distributed terrible (ancient) medicare while modern care and devices were available. In any case no should even joke, (if that was what she was doing) about admiring either of them. Beck sucks more than both of them & has more influence.

I said 'turning to something' to make a particular point, does not by any means need to mean supporting it in any significant way. I can 'turn to Hitler' to make a point against that kind of tyranny etc etc. My point is that this is very likely the ACTUAL context here, and that most people do not see it at all.

I only have one question to prove it wasn't a joke by Anita Dunn about Mao. She says her favorites are Mother Teresa and Mao. Why does she spend 3-4 more minutes at least on Mao and never once mention Mother Teresa again or anything about her? Doesn't sound like a joke to me at all. If it was a joke she would have gone on to talk about Mother Teresa not Mao, instead she never talks about Mother Teresa. So it's clearly not a joke.

How he struggled to take China against all odds. The quote from Mao is the one she told them to take off into the world with. You only reported half the story as usual and zero fact checking again. I think a main point of difficulty here is her big pause after saying 'turn to most', which I'll bet anything was just a botch on her part. Anyway people witnessed that small moment and it stuck in their minds, when she probably just lost track of her speech for a couple seconds.

Misquoted her phrasing, she said "...but the two people I turn to most, to basically deliver a simple point, which is you're going to make choices." Turning to something to make a point does not mean you support it. I think there is the joking pairing of an unexpected opposite, combined with making a practical point. Mixing humor smoothly into rhetoric in such a way is pretty common, right? As a joke it didn't work well but in the end I think it's pretty straightforward, she doesn't support Mao

If a joke contains something unfamiliar with the audience it is not a joke, so the audience can't relate and connect the dots even in some abstract way. Reading a biography on mao is about knowing tyranny--saying your favorite potical philosopher is mao means you know who he is and what he stands for; mao was a terrible human being.

Mao was bad, but he wasn't systematically murdering an entire people. Mao was the dictator of a huge cultural shift in China, like Hitler and Stalin, but Mao's crimes were not (IMO looking at history) comparable to those of Stalin or Hitler. She quoted Mao and made a joke about it. I'm sure some joke when quoting:
"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed."
The thing that was ironic about the joke is that Mother Theresa and Mao said similar things.

The Young Turk only showed a small portion of Anita Dunn's comments on Mao. She was not joking. As far as the Young Turk's counterarguments, they are silly. Dunn claims that she was simply quoting Lee Atwater. Where is the proof of Lee Atwater saying the exact same words in the exact same context? I have yet to see any independent proof outside of Dunn's claim. Next, Newt's Mao quote, the only one SLIGHTLY comparable to Dunn's, still does not touch Dunn's laudatory praise of Mao.

My history professor required the reading of a Mao biography for his course on China. Does this make him a lover of Mao? A thousand times no! Just because someone suggests the reading of a Mao biography (or that of Hitler, Stalin, or Attila the Hun, for that matter) does not mean that they support the person whom the biography is about.

For example, isn't it possible that President Bush wanted Rove to further observe the awfulness of Mao?
