this is one of my favorite spirituals, and i think this arrangement sounds beautiful. music is open for all kinds of interpretations, it's how it evolves. the more traditional soulful version is the original and is also beautiful, but this is also very beautiful as well. nicely done. =)
@ Quester550 God Bless you but this song originated from the Old Black Negro Spirituals therefore the way this choir did it is most likely like it was done when our great great great grandparents were alive. I really enjoyed this song that was not done to "win" a competition. God Bless you.
@zacoboe 1. Who? 2. Soul doesn't discriminate based on race. 3. EVERY song needs to be sung with soul from Eric Whitacre to Moses Hogan, just a different style of soul. 4. The cultural and historical context of this song call for a big fat black brassy soul quality, no matter who or what it was written for, nor who or what is performing it. 5. Sure it was performed beautifully, but music isn't music without paying due respect to this cultural and historical context and due respect was not payed.
@heyazacahey but it is also in the people right of whoever is performing it to interpret a song how they see fit. so they aren't doing it wrong, nor are they not ' not paying respect to the cultural context' because not everyone can sing a certain way.
@XxWeccaxX Look up Florence Jenkins singing Queen Of The Night, then look up Diana Damrau singing Queen Of The Night then tell me there is not a right or wrong way to do a song. And if it's not wrong... it's just bad!
@heyazacahey it's not really bad. you think it is because "they ain't got no soul" but then again... that PERSONAL OPINION. here, i'll copy paste what Jcarlton07 said for your entertainment.
"God Bless you but this song originated from the Old Black Negro Spirituals therefore the way this choir did it is most likely like it was done when our great great great grandparents were alive. I really enjoyed this song that was not done to "win" a competition. God Bless you." BAM
@XxWeccaxX 1. The fact that they have no soul is not subjective, thus not a personal opinion. 2. As you seem to like a point out Jcarlton07's post is also a PERSONAL OPINION, and one that I find rather wrong. 3. They are right, though, in the fact that it "originated from the Old Black Negro Spirituals" 4. In fact, it was a song passed down through oral tradition by enslaved Africans 5. And though this may be one interpretation of the song, I find it one that doesn't respect this oral tradition.
I've heard this sung by All the U-Tube Offerings, I must say that " APOSTOLIC TABERNACLE MASS CHOIR, Wins Hands Down. They Show Excitement & Much JOY when Singing unto the Lord. Trust me, Only the dead could sleep while they Sing.
It's a shame that Some sing this Great song, Like a Funereal Dirge. Put SMILES on your faces & Remember; Your not singing to Man, Your singing to GOD!, Now Act Like It.
I did this with my chorus for Districts, He did the "I was but young... The river of jordan...." parts as solos and that part in the middle. Actually the whole soprano one line was a solo, so it weird hearing so many voices doing it.... [I was the soloist I love this song especially the end] We got superiors. Good Job!
Scholz was my director in HS and the community choir he started while he was getting his DMA.
It's funny to see him using songs he had us sing yeeears ago with a college choir. I am proud of his mission and what he is doing up in Chico though -- you guys may not realize it but you are SO LUCKY to have him directing you.
My only critique is the tone is too bright for my tastes, especially with this style.

@heyazacahey it also depends on personal opinion, you know

@XxWeccaxX Given everything, I'd say the call on whether this is good or bad relies a lot more on other things than personal opinion.

is this piece arranged by Moses Hogan? if so, the MSVMA state honors SSAA choir is doing it for their 2008-2009 concert.

When I first heard this, I thought it was "right-on, king Jesus" as if it was written be some kind of evangelical hipster.
