Seriously, Great Job! I have learned a ton from watching your 4 part video on the 550. Mine is in the mail for Christmas from my father. You were very tedious and explained each step very well. Thanks for the tip about checking power every 5 rounds for the first 20 and the next 20 after that.
Very good set of videos. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then a video with audio like this is worth a million. I have struggled through many a set of written instructions and there is nothing like seeing it to help understanding.
Thanks for the video series. I am getting back into reloading after a 40 year layoff and things have changed a lot. I am lucky as a friend down the street also has a 550 and I will be bugging him for help.
Am now just getting into reloading. These vids are the best I have found on basic set ups which I needed. I see you did these 3 years ago. Are you still doing vids and if so are you planning on some on 223 ? Thanks again.
Thank you very much for those videos, I'm from Brazil just got that dillon, was having a bad time trying to setup it, manual isnt much helpfull, but with your videos became pretty easy, but i'm still failing at set the primer system, whenever i try to load it the primers all fall straight, and don't line up, using primers for a .38 SPL, any tips there?
When initially setting up the powder measure, I find it best to cycle the measure 3 or 4 times then check the weight again. It give the components of the measure a chance to seat in place. Also, gently tap the powder reservoir a few times when you first pour powder into it so that the powder will settle to an even density (especially flake powder). Those of you that are new to the 550b are going to be very pleased. I wish I had this video when I bought my 550 many years ago. Great job!
Good work on the videos. I will be getting my 550B next month, ordering from Dillon. I have used the RCBS Rock chucker for years, now into 3 gun competition with AR15 and .45 1911, needless to say the "chucker" ain't up to the task, qty. speaking. Set up of press will be a snap using your vids! Thanks
Great job with this series. I just received my Dillon 550B, and your set of 4 videos really helped me set up my toolheads. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this.
I'm doing research on reloaders before I buy my press. I'm going to be loading .38 SP, .357MAG, and .45 ACP. Your video series is the best I've found so far and I wanted to thank you for making these videos. I'm sold on the dillon 550. Great job!
You have done a great job on this vid exelent for pistol reloading do you do rifle? I am interested in progressive loading for a 223 autoloader but Figured it was to hard to setup a dillon I'm starting to look into this expencive press but wonder if its worth it?
in my opinion it is very easy to set up as well as adjust if need be. i believe it is a very high quality product that will serve you well with virtually any caliber.
Excellent video series. Great educational stuff for a muzzleloader, like me, that is about to start shooting modern stuff. A joy to watch. I knew nothing but now feel I have a good basic understanding of what goes into fabricating a cartridge, even though I will be reloading with a Rock Chucker. Thanks for the lessons.
thanks, and good point. i keep saying that im going to make some new vids, unfortunately i just got a new job and am in the process of moving. as soon as i get set back up i plan to make a video answering a lot of the common questions i get and will include shell plate setup.
How much of a crimp do you use for 38 special? That is always a tough decision. For semi-autos you want enough taper crimp so you don't get bullet setback. Too much and you can affect accuracy. For rifle loads very little I think.
the proper amount of crimp is a hard thing to measure. you want to ensure that the case mouth is being rolled into the cannelure properly. one thing to watch out for is black streaks down the walls of your case upon firing. this is an indication that the bullet is not leaving the case uniformly which could be an sign of improper crimp. i find with auto rounds, you want a solid crimp but definitely dont want the brass to 'bite' into the bullet. this is more of an issue with plated bullets.
Great Vid, I wish I'd seen this series when I was setting up my 550B. :) It's 10x better watching the process than going by the instructions from Dillon. (which are fine in themselves) Can you tell me what die set you're using in this vid?
I've commented before, but had to come back and give you a shout out on how great these vids are. It's really helpful and easier to understand when you can actually see the process and the parts. On another note...you should work for Dillon because you have me totally sold on that machine!! :D cheers!
Great vids, I use a 550B as well and your advice is spot on. BTW, I recommend the electronic powder scale, way faster than the balance beam. Also, shame on you for not using all that magnificent pegboard in your garage! (jk)
i have never had a failure to fire, failure to eject, or any sort of failure in any of my handloads. i pay pretty close attention to what im doing, and once you under the whole process its pretty simple.
i bet your collection tray is sitting too far forward on the bracket stopping your handle from moving all the way back. that would cause the primers to not be seated to the proper depth. check and see if your handle bar is hitting your collection tray.
and I want to know how can I regulate the distance between the bullet case and the primer.I read that the correct distance is between 0.003 to 0.008. and I know that the primer is still out because when I put the bullet case on the table it leans.
Hi!First of all thank you very much for your reply.I have the same press than you(Dillon 550B)The only difference is that I don't have the blue receptacle on the left to put the bullets.I think my Dillon 550B is older than yours.Anyway,I think my primers are still out, because of that I'm doing that question.
I'm from Argentina.First of all my English is very poor,so,I'll try to write the best I can.How can we regulate de distance between the primer and the shell?Example,if I push the primer inside the shell and the primer is(in my opinion)still out. What screw do I have to adjust,to push(even more)the primer inside the shell?I mean, what do I have to do to regulate on my own the distance between the primer and the case of the bullet?I'll really appreciate if you explain that to me.
it depends on what kind of press you have. usually there is some sort of physical stop you adjust to set the distance the primer ram pushes the primer up into the case. i could better explain it if you tell me what kind of press you have/want.
Primer seating is more a matter of feel. You don't want to crush the primer of course, but you can usually feel the primer bottoming out with most systems. As for pistol, seating depth is really not much of a concern so long as the primer is flush or below the casehead, on rifles, it's important, lots of guys use rcbs, lee, or sinclair primer seating tools in a separate operation. Hope this helps.
Most helpful video series I've seen for new users...clear, concise, and thorough. Thank you for the videos!
