why do people give so much respect for jack johnson boxing skills? i get he was the first black champion but the guy dident do shit worthy of being a top heavyweight
Until Louis came around boxing in this period was crap. Bear had no technique other then hitting hard, Primo was crap and was owned by the mob, Braddock had bags of potential but wasted the best years of his career losing to bums and he's records a joke, Schmeling was intelligent and by watching video of Louis was able to work out Louis weaknesses but that's about his only claim to fame.
Too bad Max Baer was too much of a clown and messed around when he lost the title, because that was not the way he won it against Primo. He pasted Primo everywhere. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective.
You can see one of the reasons Joe was so difficult to deal with is because he was so technically sound.A big difference from Baer, braddock, dempsey,Tunney ect...
@ESSENCEOFEACHTHING Actually I agree with you till you mentioned Tunney. Tunney was one of the first boxers to really know how to dance the ring and not be so stationery. He had an effective jab and a great 1-2 combination and he used angles and lateral movement in the 20's. Joe Louis though was way greater cause of his tremendous power, great combination punching, and very subtle defense.
@PREZ150 True, but at this time, he only had one flaw which he needed to correct. This was something that Jack Johnson noticed right before the first Schmeling fight, wanted to show him, but Joe's handlers would not let him. So, Jack told the press Max would beat him, said how, and guess what...? It was the same flaw Max saw and exploited: he would drop his left after he jabbed, exposing his chin. After that first fight, I am sure Joe never did that again! Greatest of all time after that.
Strange number of mistakes in the commentaries in this section. "Brilliant performance against Tommy Loughran in a boxing masterpiece"? Braddock was well handled. He fought Laski 3 months, not 3 weeks before Baer. Louis lost to Schmelling in'36. Braddock's fight with Baer was two years before Louis, not one. Note the difference in how Sharkey goes down from a Louis uppercut to how he reacted in the Carnera fight.
Joe Louis is a slave, end of story

Have to say that Joe Lois looks very sharp and very much like a modern fighter.

James J. Braddock just fight with so much heart and soul! gotta love him!

Carnera must have been punch-drunk to turn away from his opponent to tell the ref he was done--Baer got in a good right!!
dedbusted 2 years ago
Max Baer vs. Primo Carnera is like a recreation of Jack Dempsey vs. Jess Willard back in 1919 except there's more knockdowns in Baer vs. Carnera.

8:26 --> I'm no boxing referee, but that looks like a low blow to me.
