Not many people realize that while the song and album is Rod Stewart as a solo artist, this and the album in all actuality, are The Faces! Ronnie, Kenny, Ron, Ian and Rod! The were the f'n best!
I think the vocal is live - it is very different to the recorded version. That was quite common for TOTP. John Peel on the mandolin is hilarious though.
That was Ron Wood! I'm sure of it - black & white & yellow jacket with yellow pants. Didn't get a good enough look at the other guy to see who that was. Saw a doc on Long John Baldry last year and he, they all talk about how they were all friends when they were virtual unknowns back in London. Him, Stewart, Elton John, The Stones, David Bowie and others I don't remember. Most of them participated and it was really interesting to hear about all of them when they started out.
this was the first record i ever bought, i was a mere 10 year old who had no interest in music until i heard that unique rasping voice, i think its great ive a lad of 18 who has it on his ipod
love this song.. i might not be frum that era but, this song has a huge meaning in my life... and everytime i hear it.. it also brings back those memories.. wills.. whats..ifs...
I love this video, it's a lip sync and the band can barely keep a straight face, after the mandolin solo, the bass player is playing soccer while he should be playing the bass part and Ron Wood stops playing during the guitar solo. You can tell they thought it was a dumb ass idea.
Mom told me to go heat up the car a few days ago..So iWent out and started the car..And This song came on. :'D My Mom used to play it to me when I Was Little<33 I looked Like A Reatard Dancing to This. c: This Song's Amazingg. :D
I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed The Faces. Great music - heard it first in 1971 when I was in college. I'm happy that people are still listening. The video and audio are first class quality.
this was my uncle Ray's favorite song..he was a wonderful man who kept our OUTRAGEOUSLY large family in check loving each other no matter what happened lol..
him and his 8 month preg fiance were found dead in their car on xmas eve over 15 years ago...
Grande Rod
Saw them in 71 at the Capitol theatre NY. About 100 people in the audience, they ripped it like there was 100,000 in the crowd. I think I paid $3.50. I don't even remember if there was another act. Fuck, I will remember that night forever.
I first heard this song in 1971 on the radio in a car after my first college football game (University of Tennessee). I was 19, and in a relationship with an older woman (divorced 28 lady that I have lost track of). Every time I hear this song it takes me back to those days, to days of hope and innocence and possibilities unlimited. In some ways, this song brings me back to those times, and still brings tears to my eyes.
I guess "real men" do wear yellow pants and high (white!!!) heels after Labor Day........ Rod was pretty tame in this clip. Still my all-time favorite Rod song! thanks for sharing!

The guy on the stool in the beard (pretending to play mandolin) is Martin Quittenton who co-wrote the song with Rod.

@TBFinn I agree with you, I think the vocal is live, too. All the little bends and flourishes indicate such.

You all know that is Kenny Jones on the drums right? Does anyone wanna guess what great band he later stepped into?

I believe he played drums for the Who when I saw them in '79 post-Keith's passing.
